Students will describe main character traits from events in the story. Students understand new vocabulary words that aid students in comprehension of story. Students will understand how prefixes and suffixes change the meaning of words. Students will understand that compound words are made up of two smaller words. Before Reading Chapter 1Teacher reviews the following vocabulary words that will be in Chapter 1. Teacher explains by knowing what these words meaning before they read the story they will be better able to understand what is happening in the story. (3.RL.4)Teacher Options/Extensions for vocabularyStudents keep a journal of vocabulary words. Students can write how the word was used in the story by copying the sentence it was used in. Students can draw an illustration that shows the word’s meaning.
