Inclement weather is the only exception to the state regulations. There is no make-up hours available at this time.Students must score 85% on all testing materials for written and practical competencies before the testing date.Internships may be offered but there is no guarantee. Students must go through training, an interview process, and be in good stating in the cosmetology program. If the student is absent from the school day, they must call the teacher before going to the work site. Internships are a privilege and can be revoked by either the cosmetology teacher or the salon. All sites must be approved by the cosmetology department before an internship placement. Placements can only be made through the cosmetology teacher because certificates and paperwork must be in place. These work placements are after school, weekend, and do not count towards the 840 hours needed to take the Virginia State Board Exam.GradingNine week grades will include both class and lab performance.Summative 60%Summative work consists of tests, evaluations, assessments, mastery of competencies (including work place readiness skills, professionalism, and safety) cumulative projects, and state exam benchmark assessments.Formative 40%Formative work consists of daily lab and classroom assignments, written work designed to enhance learning, reports, homework, quizzes, and development of professional competencies. Exams are averaged at 10% of the semester grade and consist of a written and practical exam.AttendanceRegular attendance is critical. Skills learned during class and labs are important to the success of the student and hours are required to be eligible to take the state board exam. Absences result in a gap in the students skill set and documented hours are part of this program. A written exuse to the Cosmetology Teacher is required if the student will be absent. The hours for this program are enforced by the State of Virginia, so excused absences or other school activities do not count toward student hours. Inclement weather is the only exception to the state regulations. There’s no way for the student to make-up hours. The student must be in attendance during their scheduled times to accumulate hours. State required hours of completion of the program are set at 840. If required hours are not met at the end of the senior year, the student will not be able to take the state board exam. Without passing the state board exam, the student cannot obtain a Virginia Cosmetology License. DressThe student will be expected to wear a lab jacket or apron when in the lab. Due to standing, appropriate shoes should be worn. Students are expected to dress appropriately and must be professional at all times.School Supplies: Binder, pens, pencils, loose leaf notebook paper, subject dividers, white-out, stylist apron or jacket. Students are provided with equipment and styling tools and everything that is needed for instruction.
