Historical Character Who Embodies Transcendentalism

For this assignment, you will have one day in the library to research the character that you have chosen to be for the “tea party.” Please fill out this worksheet about your chosen person. Remember, this character must have been inspired by, or idealize, transcendental qualities. Some ideas to consider might be influential counter-culture figures of the 1960’s, social/environmental activists, poets, artists, and musicians.

1. Describe their physical appearance including dress, hairstyle and other important features. Print a couple of pictures of your character and attach them for your reference.

2. Describe their personality. This may include mannerisms, behavior, speech patterns, common sayings etc. If they were alive in a recent enough time period, try to find videos of them to watch. Print any sources you find that may help with the aspect of personality and highlight relevant parts.

3. Describe your person’s impact on history. Why are they famous? How did they change the world? Print any sources you find that may help with the aspect of personal impact and highlight relevant parts.

4. List any interesting facts that you found about your person.

5. Describe the ways in which your character is a transcendentalist.

6. Write a “toast” introducing yourself (as the character), your personal achievements and how you have been influenced by Transcendentalism on a separate sheet of paper. You should transfer your speech to note cards in order to share it with the class as a speech more easily at the tea party. You will turn in your toast with this sheet as part of the project.

o Speech clearly links this character to Transcendentalism and specifically uses a relevant quote from a Transcendentalist (Emerson or Thoreau) to do so
