Group Check-In #2-Peak/Everest Character Scenarios: Friday, March 8thObjectives:Students will gain a deeper understanding of character strengths and weaknesses.Students will learn to back character strengths and weaknesses with textual evidence.Students will begin to view their characters holistically by considering how they would respond to situations outside of Mount Everest. Activity Description: One of the major goals in reading Peak and Everest is preparing students to write a district required character analysis paper. Within their papers, students must be able to recognize their selected characters' strengths, weaknesses, and changes throughout the book. We have spent quite a bit of time discussing the main characters' strengths and weakness in regards to the stories, but I wanted to take things a step further by asking students to determine how these characters would respond to situations outside of the book. I designed this character scenarios activity in attempt to help my students see the characters' strengths and weaknesses as a whole, not just based on their climbing experiences. Though these novels are meant to be read fairly independently, in designing the unit, I placed my students into "climbing teams" of four-five students and have designated times for the teams to meet once or twice a week. This activity serves as one of their several group check-ins. Each team is given a handout with the name of one of the characters from their novel and scenario regarding this character. Because the novels only allow us to get to know the characters on Mount Everest, these scenarios ask students to picture their characters at school, social gatherings, or with friends. After reading their scenario out loud, the groups are asked to come up with three character traits that describe their character and are relevant to this scenario. They are then asked to determine if the traits are strengths or weaknesses. In order to prove their characters possess these traits, students are required to find three pieces of textual evidence. Finally, based on their character traits and textual evidence, students take time to write about how their character would respond to the scenario. Though the scenarios were written with Peak and Everest characters in mind, this activity could be used with any novel dealing with characterization. Lesson Progression:As a class, go over Miss Tenney's Billie Jo example and the directions for this activity. (5 minutes) Gather students into climbing groups and pass out character scenarios. (3 minutes)Students will work in climbing groups to determine how their assigned character would handle the situation provided in the scenario. (15 minutes) Groups will share their responses with the class. Billie Jo loves spending time with Livie, so she excitedly agrees to go. While sitting in math class, Billie Jo suddenly remembers she had already told Arley Wanderdale she would come to his house to practice a new piano piece after school. Now Billie Jo doesn't know what to do. Her first choice is to go over to Livie's house, but she doesn't want to make Arley mad. Maybe, she could just come up with a good excuse for Arley. She could go over to Livie's house and tell Arley she was sick. He would probably never know the difference! Billie Jo doesn't love the idea of lying to Arley, but she knows Livie's mother is making her favorite chocolate cake, and Livie doesn't invite her over very often. How could she give up this opportunity? Billie Jo looks up and sees Livie walking towards her. She needs to make a decision...and quick! What does Billie Jo do in this situation? Instead of completing the practice problems, he spent his evening playing video games. He knows his mom will ground him if he gets another zero. As Tilt begins to panic, he sees the girl who sits next to him asking Mrs. Anderson if she can go to the restroom. The girl leaves the room, but leaves her homework sitting on her desk. Because their desks are in the back of the room, Mrs. Anderson probably wouldn't notice if he quickly copied down the girl's answers. Still, he knows Mrs. Anderson has a strict no cheating policy. She had told his class at the beginning of the year that if she caught a student copying off another student, both students would receive zeros on their assignments. If Tilt copies the assignment, not only does he risk receiving a zero, but he also puts the girl at risk for a zero. If he doesn't copy the assignment, he will automatically fail. He glances at the clock and realizes class is about to start. He needs to make a decision...and fast! He would have much rather spent his time outside than focusing on school. His parents threatened to ground him from climbing if he didn't get all A's and B's on his third quarter report card. One day, Josh got a brilliant idea. He decided to ask the smart guy who sat next to him in class if he wanted to hang out after school. Maybe, if they hung out a few times, the boy would be willing to do some of Josh's homework for him. This would raise his grades, while still giving him plenty of time to climb. The guy was a little strange, but once Josh got his grades up, he could go back to hanging out with his normal group of friends. When Josh told his friends about this plan, they told him it was selfish. They didn't think it was fair for Josh to use this guy to raise his grades. Josh didn't necessarily agree. Besides, the guy needs a friend. Who wouldn't want to hang out with Joshua Wood? Still, Josh kind of saw their point. Maybe he should just take the week off climbing and focus on his grades. His list of missing assignments would take hours to complete. Suddenly, Josh saw the guy from his class walking towards him. If he was going to ask, now was his chance. What did Josh do in this situation? Peak doesn't know this classmate very well and just wants to eat his creamed turkey in peace, so at first, he pretends not to hear Joe's unkind words. A few minutes later, out of the corner of his eye, Peak sees Joe shove the classmate. Now Peak doesn't know what to do. Joe is twice his size, so if he gets involved, he could get hurt. Peak also realizes the classmate being picked on is often made fun of by the rest their peers, so if he jumps in to help, he could risk his reputation. Maybe he should just stay out of it. As he takes another bite of his lunch, he sees Joes prepare to take a swing at the classmate. What does Peak do? Her waitress is a college-aged girl, who looks like she's had a long day. When the waitress brings Holly her food, she is so excited to take the first bite. Holly is doing a news review on this hip new restaurant and she has heard amazing things about the seared duck. As the duck enters her mouth, she is instantly shocked that it's room temperature. Shouldn't this meal be served hot? It costs $35 a plate! Holly considers her options. She first thinks about complaining to the waitress. Maybe she should even ask to speak to the girl's manager. Holly Angelo deserves the best service! Still, the girl looks so tired and stressed. Maybe she should give her a break. Another option would be to give the restaurant a terrible review. She could tell the whole city how awful the food tasted. Then again, her close friend's husband was one of the owners, and a bad review could ruin their friendship. Maybe she should just keep quite. Perhaps the cold duck was just a simple mistake. Besides, she had been trying to watch her weight, so skipping the extra calories couldn't hurt. Holly's waitress is walking towards her. If she's going to complain, now's her chance. Of these three options, which does Holly choose? How does she respond? He really wants to join them, but earlier that day, his mom had asked him to visit his grandmother on his way home from school. When he tries to explain this to his friends, they tell Sun-jo they need him to play, or their teams won't be even. Sun-jo explains that his mom will be mad if he doesn't do what she asked. They tell him to lie. Besides, his grandmother is very old and probably won't notice if he doesn't show up. Plus, his mom is at work until 6:00pm, so if Sun-jo gets home before his mom, she will never know the difference. Sun-jo loves soccer, and he really wants to spend time with his friends, but he doesn't know if lying to his mom is the best idea. Sun-jo's friends are begging him to come with them. What would do you think Sun-jo would do in this situation?
