STRONG PRESIDENT OR WEAK PRESIDENT

STRONG PRESIDENT OR WEAK PRESIDENT?

Position Paper

US Government

American history is filled with examples of many strong presidents as well as presidents that would be considered weak or ineffective. What makes a president strong? There are many factors that influence the effectiveness of a president and they can be classified as either external or internal. An external factor is something the president is not able to fully control. For example, current events such as the economy may not be in the president’s immediate influence because oil prices in the Middle East are fluctuating. Internal factors are characteristics and abilities the president brings to the office: personality, communication skills, vision, listening skills, and experience.

You will be writing a two to three-page paper about a particular president. In your paper, you will be taking a position as to whether your president was a strong or weak leader. You must include background information about your president (no more than half a page) AND the events/issues that surrounded his presidency. You also must cite at least three examples to support your position. Each example must be explained in detail. Make sure you explain why each example supports your position of a strong or weak president. Be sure to include the proper introduction with a thesis statement and conclusion.

Finally, you must include a bibliography (reference page) at the end of the paper. It must include at least three citations that are non-internet sources. As a total, you must have at least four citations. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Socia.

This is worth a test grade (100 points)! The due date is March 2 for B day and March 3 for A day . If you turn the paper in late you will be deducted 10 points for each late day.
