Francesco Redi:

In 1668 he published a book disproving or refuting the idea of spontaneous generation. Redi set up an experiment where he put meat in two jars. One jar was left uncovered and the other jar had a cloth top.

Robert Hooke:

In 1663 he discovered cells in a piece of cork. Other things that Robert Hooke looked at under a microscope are insects, sponges, bryozoans, foraminifera, and bird feathers.

Anton Van Leeuwenhoek:

In 1683 he was the first person to look at living organisms found in pond water. He called this organisms animalcules or “little animals.” He also discovered bacteria, protists, sperm cells, and blood cells.

In 1838 he concluded that all plants are made of cells. The dark or “opaque

spots” that he noticed are now called nuclei. He also figured out that cells are
