Everything you need to know about Saint Petersburg GraduationLiv Ocampo, SPCHS StudentThursday, May 5, 201617-year-old Senior, Summer Muhar and Academic Advisor of Saint Petersburg Collegiate High, Yolander Betts, discusses the upcoming college graduation event, held at Tropicana Field Stadium in St. Petersburg, Florida on Saturday, May 7, at 9:30 a.m.The day before, Friday, May 6, will be the high school graduation. This is for the Saint Petersburg Collegiate High students who participate in a specific program of getting their AA degree and high school diploma at the same time. It is highly recommended that a student meets with their Academic Advisor prior to graduation to review their records and ensure all graduation requirements will be met. Betts explains the difference between high school and college graduation.College graduation and high school graduation are held at different places and times.“[But] what makes a distinct difference is that high school graduation is more personal than the college one, which is a big event. The high school graduation will be held at the Palladium while the College graduation is at Tropicana. Saint Petersburg Colligate High School students [seniors] graduate with the regular college students that attend Saint Pete College.” Betts saysBefore attending the event, you must do a number of things to prepare.Muhar explains the steps of preparing for graduation. “It’s kind of a tedious process, but this is what you have to do.” A student must first apply for graduation, follow the directions listed, and then submit the registration online on MySpc.Each graduation application is individually reviewed to make sure the student has completed all the classes that are required to complete their degree. If someone was attending Colligate High, they would also have to apply for high school graduation. Graduation is not cheap, students have to purchase their diploma and buy their own robe. Muhar says, “We have to buy our cap and gown, it's 38.00 dollars for the cap gown and tassel, 37.43 to be exact.”Both graduations are about two hours long, yet in high school graduation, it lasts more than 2 hours. Beginning with the Junior/Senior Award ceremony that morning at 8:30, juniors and seniors are required to attend the bestowal. Then is Senior Celebration, which is optional for seniors, in which they’re given an opportunity to socialize one last time held at Treasure Island. Graduation rehearsal is afterward, then return later at 6:30 for the actual graduation. Seniors must go to both high school and college graduations while juniors just have to attend the award ceremony, and nothing more.-276225127000-4000502322830Pictured: Student Advisor, Youlander BettsPicture taken by: Liv Ocampo00Pictured: Student Advisor, Youlander BettsPicture taken by: Liv Ocampo“Our [high school graduation] is different because each senior gets to write a thank you note when our name is called that the principal reads. So it makes it a little more personal because you get to know a little bit about the person as there walking up there. They put down what they're majoring in, what college they're going to, their future plans and who they’d like to thank on an index card.”In high school, names are called by height, so the taller students don’t stand in front of the smaller students. However, college graduation the student arrives at Tropicana field at 9:30 Graduation morning, there is no rehearsal or extra events. At the college graduation, students are called by their program. Students will be grouped together by their major they are pursuing beforehand then called like so. Attendance is first come first serve, students need to make sure they arrive early to the field and wear their proper attire. ................
