If you don't already have Python on your computer, you can download it for free. Here's how it works for a computer running

1. First, check if your computer already has

Python. Go to the `Start' menu and click on `All Programs'. If you see a program with the word Python or IDLE in it, or anything with the Python icon ( ) then you have Python installed. Check that the version number begins with a 3, as earlier versions of Python won't run all the code in this book.

2. If you don't have it already,

or if you have the wrong version, Python is available as a free download from the Python Software Foundation. For a link, go to Usborne Quicklinks: w w w.u s b o r n e .c o m /q u i c k l i n k s and type in `Python'. Then click on `Download Python from the official website'.

3. Python comes in different versions,

shown by different numbers after the name. This book uses version 3, so any version number beginning with a 3 will work. We recommend you download the latest version.

4. The program will begin to download

automatically. When it has finished, follow the instructions on screen to complete the installation. If you want to choose where to install it on your machine, choose the `Customize installation' option, which will allow you to browse places on your computer. For example, you could save it in `My Documents'.
