Compass: Faith & Funerals: Part 4

Sunday, 10 August 2014

In this five part series, Compass goes behind the scenes of Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and secular funerals. We

enter privileged territory to share religious rites and rituals practised in 21st century Australia.

Death is the journey we all eventually take.

But how do we carry our loved ones on their final journey? How do we honour them in death? And how do we grieve?

We cross over into privileged territory to stand beside closest kin and share their intimate moments, to get a picture of death, as it's done

in 21st century Australia.

In this episode a Sydney group of Pentecostal Ghanaians celebrate and dance for the deceased; and a do-it-yourself secular funeral: no God or

grief allowed.

ANZAC Girls: Adventure

Sunday, 10 August 2014 New Series

Honouring the centenary of the commencement of WW1, ANZAC Girls is a moving new six-part series based on the unique, and rarely told true

stories of Australian and New Zealand nurses serving at Gallipoli and the Western Front.

In WW1 over 3,500 young Australian and New Zealand women served as nurses with the two fledgling nations' army services. Nearly 300 were

decorated for courage beyond the call of duty. Facing the brutality of war, they were remarkable women, doing extraordinary work, serving

amidst bombing raids, poison gas and terrible disease - saving lives and transforming the spirits of the soliders. But through it all they

experienced exceptional friendship, love, success and heartbreak.

Drawing on the book The Other Anzacs as well as from diaries, letters, photographs and historical achievements ANZAC Girls is based on real

events and real people - Alice (Georgia Flood), Elsie (Laura Brent), Olive (Anna McGahan), Hilda (Antonia Prebble) and Grace (Caroline Craig).

Like their brothers, fathers, lovers and husbands, these ANZAC Girls are our heroes. But they were also just ordinary girls - our sisters, our

daughters, ourselves - looking for adventure, love, fun and friendship. This is their story...

In the first episode, nurses Alice Ross-King, Elsie Cook, Olive Haynes, Hilda Steele and Matron Grace Wilson sign up to do their bit. With

hopes of new adventures, challenges and thoughts of finding love and themselves, they are shipped to the other side of the world to serve their

country.

The ANZAC girls arrive in Egypt and soon realise that war is not quite the 'splendid adventure' they initially thought as they deal with convoy

after convoy of dead, dying and wounded men from the botched Gallipoli landing. But while our nurses' world may be dominated by the war, by

the army and hospitals, there is room for love, laughter and self-reflection.

Code Of Silence

Tuesday, 12 August 2014

Code Of Silence, a one-hour Compass special, follows the parallel journeys of a fervently Orthodox father and his now-secular son, after the

son breaks the code of silence in Melbourne's Orthodox community and goes public with his story of being sexually abused as a student.

Manny Waks, who claims he was abused by two employees at his Chabad-run centre in the 1980s, demands the perpetrators be brought to justice, as

well as the rabbis who allowed it to happen and those he claims covered it up.

His father Zephaniah claims he has been virtually excommunicated for breaking an ancient Jewish law forbidding Jews from informing secular

authorities about other Jews.

He demands his name be publicly cleared or he may be forced to leave the country. We see how this father and son have split this tightly-knit

powerful Jewish sect as we open the door into their insular world of study and duty, charity and faith, power and piety.

Will Manny get justice in court? Will the rabbis be held to account? And what price will the father and son pay for blowing the whistle?

Jennifer Byrne Presents: Sloth

Tuesday, 12 August 2014

Jennifer Byrne and a panel of esteemed guests are presenting a sinfully good seven weeks' viewing of deadly sins. This week Sloth will be

discussed in all of its 'guilt inducing glory'.

Sloth is the most ambiguous of the sins. Its definition has morphed over the centuries since it was originally defined in the 4th century as a

lack of spiritual effort. In the modern, over-committed era we generally believe sloth is about laziness and procrastination. But perhaps we've

all got it wrong and sloth is really about the lack of moral courage.

Jennifer is joined by former politician and author, Bob Carr; comedian and television presenter, Hannah Gadsby; author Gary Shteyngart (Little

Failure and Super Sad True Love Story) and Buddhist teacher Venerable Robina Courtin to unravel the complex nuances of sloth in art, literature

and life. Works looked at include The Simpsons (animation); Garfield (cartoon); Oblomov (novel by Ivan Goncharov); The Seagull, Uncle Vanya,

Three Sisters, The Cherry Orchard (plays by Anton Chekhov); The Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things (painting by Hieronymus Bosch);

Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall-street (short story by Herman Melville); Hamlet (play by William Shakespeare); A Confederacy of Dunces

(novel by John Kennedy Toole); and Nearer My Couch to Thee (essay by Thomas R. Pynchon).

Utopia: Wood For The Trees

Wednesday, 13 August 2014 New Series

From the makers of Frontline and The Hollowmen, Utopia is an eight-part satirical comedy set inside the offices of the ‘Nation Building

Authority’, a newly created government organisation responsible for overseeing major infrastructure projects. It follows the working lives and

frustrations of the people charged with turning these grand political dreams into reality.

From new roads and rail lines to airports and high-rise urban developments, Utopia examines the forces that go into creating a very

well-designed white elephant.

Featuring a stellar comic cast led by Rob Sitch, along with Celia Pacquola, Dave Lawson, Luke McGregor, Kitty Flanagan, Anthony 'Lehmo'

Lehmann, Emma-Louise Wilson, Michelle Lim Davidson and Toby Truslove, Utopia is a series for anyone who has ever been frustrated by bureaucracy

- and survived to laugh at the experience.

Tony's (Rob Sitch) attempts to sign a massive international development deal are compromised by Rhonda's (Kitty Flanagan) decision to redesign

the NBA's logo. Meanwhile, a mix-up from Jim (Anthony 'Lehmo' Lehmann) forces Nat (Celia Pacquola) to find room for a community garden within

a multi-million dollar waterfront development. Matters are further complicated with the impending arrival of a delegation from China.

Reality Check

Wednesday, 13 August 2014 New Series

Reality TV is TV right now. Everything else is just making up the numbers. And yet for all its cultural force, we barely discuss it.

That's all about to change.

Hosted by comedian Tom Ballard, Reality Check is a weekly half hour of sharp, cracking panel discussion in which no-one gets voted off at the

end, no-one plays the pantomime villain and there's nothing to be gained by crying for the camera. Having said that, if our guests want to cry,

that's up to them.

Drawing on the wisdom and wit of both the professionals who make these shows and the people who appear on them, Reality Check will dissect the

week in Reality TV, both home and abroad, share war stories, and give us the lowdown on what really goes into making Reality TV.

After a decade-plus of worldwide Reality shows there is a mountain of fun to mine and a million ideas and issues to discuss: just how important

is a back story? What is 'Frankenbite' editing? When does a 'journey' begin? How do you cast a bachelor? And what happens when things go

horribly wrong?

Australians might think we invented MasterChef, but we're only one of 41 global copies. There are 56 different versions of Got Talent out

there, 49 international Big Brother houses and 48 versions of Survivor. And with 42 countries pumping out X-Factor… that's a lot of singers

murdering 'I Will Always Love You'.

In Sweden, is MasterChef really called Masterkock? Who is Holland's racist X-Factor judge? Why does every country in the world seem to have a

toothless old guy who's taught his parrot to sing opera? Why is Reality TV the most-watched and most popular form of entertainment on the

planet, how has it changed the television landscape, and what can we learn about ourselves from these shows?

This is Reality Check.

Head First: The Porn Ultimatum

Wednesday, 13 August 2014 Final

Porn is everywhere. It's become the new 'normal'. What was hardcore 20 years ago has given way to a new level of 'extreme' and the effects on

relationships are being felt across the country. Sabour jumps into this world to follow addicts attempting to regain control of their lives and

relationships.

Middle-aged Melbournians Gillian and Ken have been in a relationship for three years and most of that time they've battled Ken's porn and sex

addiction. Gillian's had enough and is issuing him with an ultimatum: either he leaves the addiction behind or she is packing up and heading

back to the UK without him.

Young Sydney couple Elle and Jerome believes they can control porn and help other people use it positively. This is because Elle is a cam girl

- someone who does virtual peepshows via webcam for money - and she has relationships with Australian men that often seem more fulfilling than

the ones they have with their own wives. It's why some are calling 'camming' 'the future of porn'.

But what part does Jerome play in this? As Sabour peels back the layers, a complicated new picture emerges suggesting that nothing is what it

seems in this relationship.

What emerges from all of this is a big, beautiful, emotional, messy and uniquely modern love story that forces the question: 'what would you

sacrifice? How much pain would you endure to keep the one you love?'

Catalyst: Gut Reaction: Pt 1

Thursday, 14 August 2014

New research has linked the Western diet to asthma, autism, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, emphysema, cancer, and the list goes on. The reason

a healthy diet could be even more important than previously thought is because food affects the bacteria deep inside our gut.

Unbeknownst to most of us, we each carry about 1.5 kg of bacteria - that's trillions of tiny microbes that contribute 100 times as many genes

as our genomes do. In the last ten years, a technological revolution means scientists are now beginning to discover just how crucial these

microscopic creatures are to our overall health ... and what they're learning is shaking the very foundations of medicine and nutrition. Our

food, it turns out, might be making us sick... but the good news is, it could also be our medicine.

In this two-part special, reporter Dr Graham Phillips investigates whether what we feed these bacteria could be contributing to a whole litany

of diseases.

Bernadette feels grateful for her life and doesn't want to waste any time. She signs up for dance classes with Luce. She also spots a higher

paying job in the education sector; it's more money and a good promotion. Unfortunately she's not the greatest at job interviews, so she

enlists Matt's help.

Caroline's friendship with Diana is growing and they go out to dinner together. The mandatory sentencing case continues and they are both

astonished when a small piece of testimony causes the prosecutor to drop the case. They are both ecstatic.

Georgie is caught with marijuana at school. Luce is furious and immediately points the finger at Micky Mac.

Caroline presents Matt with divorce papers, which takes him by surprise. It's the end of an era for them both and a chance for something new.

The Dreamhouse

Thursday, 14 August 2014

Kirk, Justin and Sarah have very recently moved out of home for the first time, into what they're calling The Dreamhouse. Relishing this new

found freedom away from parents, they continue to spread their wings and taste a more independent way of living. With a day off work, Kirk

becomes acquainted with the washing machine for the first time.

When in doubt, he calls his mother. She can already see the beneficial effects of The Dreamhouse and that Kirk is happy in his new life. Kirk's

buoyancy could also be due to the volunteer Buddies, many of whom are his own age. His increasingly frisky behaviour prompts Buddy Zoe to put a

few firm strategies in place.

The housemates head off to a footy match and Kirk very loudly cheers on his winning team whilst Justin and Sarah watch quietly as their team

gets thrashed. It's Justin's turn to cook dinner, and after waiting for over an hour, the famished housemates finally sit down to one single

burnt taco each.

Buddy Megan talks about boundaries and appropriate language. Justin gets upset as he likes hugging people. He's had a hard day. His team lost

the footy, he burnt dinner, he can't use sexist language and now he can't hug who he likes when he likes. The road to independence is not

always easy.
