Ayanna AllenWhite Paper: Fitting within the BinaryIntroduction:As an undocumented Black Native, there has always been curiosity within myself to understand where I fit within the racial Binary. From my own personal life experience as being identified as Black, and being ridiculed socially if I identified myself by my Choctaw/Cherokee heritage, I have come to the understanding of who is and who is not allowed to develop their own individual identify outside the confines of a racial binary. This study will encompass the ideals of how Black Natives fit within the Binary of Native heritage, or Black. Additionally, this study will argue that this issue is seemingly unimportant because present day Native American tribes who formally took slaves as community members have become to adapt to a world of White supremacy.Background/Research Design: To begin this study, I will identify the Five Civilized Tribes that are recognized under federal regulations, and who formally adopted Black members of society as family members. This study sets to be a beginning of the continual study to prove the assimilation of Native Americans into White culture. This qualitative study, with a quantitative component will show that the assimilation of white culture has made Black Natives seemingly non-existent. I will locate and analyze membership for each tribe.Membership amongst each tribe can differ depending upon Blood Quantum, and/or proof of a blood relative registered on the Dawes Roll 1906. This issue of membership is problematic due to the manipulation of those who were allowed to register or who changed their racial/native affiliation for property rights, and the ability to sale land.I will locate each nation’s website, and study the word usage within each nation’s website.I will conduct a word count on specific “trigger” words that hint to assimilation of colonial culture such as: Native, Indigenous, White, and Judeo-Christian terms in context, ofcourse.I chose Religion and mention of ethnicity as a way to measure assimilation due to historical methods of establishing someone as civilized or not. Hint to the name “Five Civilized tribes”, there lays an irony within these tribes being regarded as such.Hypothesis: This qualitative study, with a quantitative component will show that the assimilation of white culture has made Black Natives seemingly non-existent within the community of The Five Civilized Tribes.Conclusion:-4000501079600 This data shows that it is a commonality amongst these Five Civilized Tribes to affiliate or practice Judeo-Christianity from Anglo/White influence. In addition, the many mentions of words that describe ethnicity in terms of white influence are utilized throughout each Nations webpages, without any mention of Blackness. What I found in addition to the quantitative analysis, was the qualitative aspect within each website. Below, I will display the qualitative conclusions based on Nation.Muscogee-CreekAdaptation of the same form of government as the United States, blood relative traced back to the 1906 Dawes Roll, No visual images of black natives.Choctaw Only fair or tan complected peopled are pictured throughout the site, required to fill out several applications to be a part of the tribe, including blood quantum, Emphasis on business.Chickasaw Same form of government as The United States; Open about their Christian Influence, but believe in serving Father Above through smoke and fire, no images of anyone who cannot be given the racial identity of white, emphasis on businessCherokee Darker complected people are shown throughout the website as well as fair skinned, same form of government as The United States, Same form of attaining membership as Creek.Seminole Federal government website, typically fair-skinned people shown throughout the website, emphasis on business. After the review of each website, I found that there was no visual implications that showed the inclusion of Black Natives. Not only was there a common adaptation of White practices that proved “civility”, but there were also visuals that further proved that there is no binary within blackness in regards to Native heritage. In other words, if one is identifiable by the eye as African-American/Black, one most likely will not easily have the ability to claim their native heritage due to Nation push back from the assimilation of White culture.
