January's Meeting

Business Meeting

Reported by Tony Wootson

January's meeting found a very good gathering at our Del Val meeting. There were 48 members and 5 visitors in attendance.

John Chionchio began the business meeting at 8:15. He started out reminding members to "pay your dues."

In addition, a request was made for those who may be interested in joining the Artisans. A certain number of Del Val members must also belong to the Artisans, in order for us to continue meeting at our location. If the dues for the Artisans' is a problem, Del Val may be able to take care of it.

We had no first showings, but a second showing, by Jim Roberts. He was voted in by the club, (and promptly prompted to "Pay Your DUES!" ( ).

There was an announcement of an Open House by The Gateway Model R.R. Club, (on Saturday and Sunday,

January 12 and 13, from 10 am to 4 pm). The Gateway Model R.R. Club is located at 100 Browning Road, in Brooklawn, NJ. They can also be found on the Web at .

Jim Durso made several announcements pertaining to activities that will take place later on this year at the Jenkintown Hobbies and M&G Hobbies Stores. (See the notes below).

John also made an announcement of an upcoming auction. Model aircraft, cars, ships and accessories from the estate of the late John D'alessandro will be auctioned off during our April club meeting. Paul Kopczynski will be conducting the auction, which will be open also opened to non-Del Val modelers - (so, please spread the word). John's family will receive a portion of the proceeds from the auction.

In addition, his extensive Aviation book collection will be brought to our February and March meetings and will be sold there.

Kudos to the creators of our 2002 Calendar Schedule

By now you've probably noticed the new Calendar Schedule that we have for this year. Even though John C. made mention at our last club meeting that I created it, my contributions were small, only bringing all of the information that had been thought of and composed together into the final document. Tommy Kortman, Bob Doebly, Dave Anderson, Jim Rosado, John Goschke, and Vince B. did most of the work, wracking their brains to come up with the interesting themes that resulted. (Thanks guys!)

In addition, I'd also like to thank the many members who have signed up to conduct clinics this year. There are many interesting ones that are scheduled.

Kudos also to John Goschke

Thanks also go out to John Goschke. He has just completed a 15-month stint as the newsletter editor for both Del Val and Bux-Mont. In addition, John previously did Del Vals' Newsletter for seven years, from 1991 through 1997. Your work is appreciated!

A Picture-taking request

How many of you regularly attend some of the model shows that take place each year? There's the NNL East, the MFCA Show, AMPS, The East Coast Hobby Show, Chiller, and Wonderfest.

I was thinking that for some of you who do regularly attend these shows and who also have a camera (and generally take pictures at these shows), how about also taking some slide pics for the club?

John Rucks has been doing this on a regular basis, both with the IPMS National Conventions, along with usually an IPMS Regional or Two.

I'm going to try to do this this year, with the October Chiller Theatre Show, along with possibly the Wonderfest Show.

I think that there would be a good number of members who would be interested in viewing slides of some of the models that show up at these shows.

Both John Rucks and Jim Durso have offered to supply their slide projectors and will even load them up.

A roll of slide film generally runs a couple bucks more than traditional film. However, Jim D. has located a place called Dale Laboratories, (found on the web at: ), that will develop the original roll of film, producing both a set of prints and slides for around $14.00.

You might want to consider doing this at the next model show that you attend.

Favorite Five added to the Web Site

I've added to our web site three pictures of each of the winners in the Favorite Five contest. I’d once again like to thank Jim Durso for setting things up and taking most of the pics.

M&G and Jenkintown Hobby Activities

Reported by Jim Durso

M&G Hobby has invited DVSM members to hold a MITI, workshop, and model contest at their store. We plan on splitting up the events so the MITI will be in the spring, along with a club model display, probably in April to allow for advertising at the earlier hobby shows. In September or October we will conduct an in-store model contest along with some workshops/clinics. We anticipate having dates established by the February meeting and would like to have commitments from as many DVSM members as possible to help and participate in these events. The contest and workshops are open to all modeling subjects.

Also Jenkintown Hobby would like us to conduct a clinic on the uses of and how to apply Bare Metal Foil. Even though automotive modelers often use it, BMF has many uses for aircraft, painting, etc. So once again, all DVSM modelers who use BMF on their modeling subjects are encouraged to participate. We hope to conduct this clinic in early March, and again, the dates should be established by the Feb. meeting.

PACM News

Reported by Jim Durso

Styrene news flash--If you haven't heard or seen yet, The Ala Kart should be on shelves now and the 58 Plymouth Fury is scheduled for release by the end of the month. Also, AMT plans to reissue the old MPC

67 GTO in August.

If you are a regular PACM/DVSM member, you should have received a separate invitation for our interim/sub meeting. Times will be discussed at the next DVSM regular meeting and directions will be forwarded to you shortly. Don't forget to confirm your attendance to our host. We will also discuss dates for the M&G shows and Jenkintown Hobby workshop.

Those of you who receive this newsletter by regular mail and are DVSM members will be receiving the PACM newsletter combined with the DVSM newsletter starting in February; The Bux-Mont section will be replaced by the PACM news. Thanks to Tony Wootson, we will save on some mailings and some sections of the PACM news that relate to general membership will be lifted and highlighted in the DVSM section.

John Walton is starting to catch up with the website updates and made significant progress in logging the information on the new photos he posted. Again, if you haven't talked to John about the details of your

model, please call or e-mail him so your model can be properly described on the website.

We are waiting replies from St. Vincent's home and St. Domenick's home for boys about doing MITI's with the kids. This will be a combined effort with the Christian Cruisers Car Club and probably will take place

during "car" season.

The suggestion of getting all the area model car clubs together for a one-time meeting has been expanded to possibly become a picnic type event at one of the area state parks. Those clubs would include the New

York and North Jersey crew, down to Maryland and west to central PA. Hmmm, what if we combined the get-together with the orphanage thing........??

If you have recently completed a model and want to do a kit review, please feel free to write it up and submit it to Tony and/or John for inclusion in the newsletters. It does not have to be elaborate, an

outline format would work, but just something to give others who wish to build the same kit a little insight into the problems you may have had or things to do to make the project go smoother. Also, don't forget we

are still looking for profiles for the members' section, so let us know your story.

After several design changes, the PACM logo is being re-designed to reflect your suggestions. Soon we will have a few more layouts to choose from again, and hopefully will be the "final answer".

Next month, the automotive theme will be "red" and Keith Jones will be presenting his weathering techniques for vehicles, after the diorama groundwork demonstration. We look forward to another great night of model business. It is great to see everyone talking and exchanging various hobby tales and stories right from the time they walk in. But please be aware of the time; when 8:00 hits try to start moving towards the meeting area so we can conduct business quickly and not spend time rounding everyone up. Normally, we like to allow 20 minutes tops for PACM business and then flow directly into DVSM business at 8:30. On contest nights and long program nights, when DVSM likes to start a little earlier, we need to start promptly at 8:00 so we can finish up by 8:15 or 8:20. Your awareness and cooperation are appreciated.

See you in February, hopefully, without any snow incidents; and ponder this until then: if your pet canary dies and goes to heaven, will he have 2 sets of wings or will just the one set do?

1/32 scale F.M.A, I.A. 58 "Pucara",

Lazlo Mfg., Buenos Aires, Argentina

by John Rucks

Quite a few years back I started to write to a modeler in Buenos Aires, Argentina. As his country did not have a model company at that time, we would trade kits for books. He was able to get some very interesting books for me and I would send him the kits that he wanted.

Some time ago he told me that there was talk in the air of a model airplane company being started by the State? Nothing more was said and I forgot all about it.

Then came the war and I was concerned about Alejandro. With the first news of the conflict I received a letter from him telling me that he was sending a "surprise" to my home. It was something that he was certain I would like, as I preferred 1/32 aircraft. I knew that with the war any package might take forever to get here.

A few weeks back a very tired mailman knocked on my door. This man has carried more packages to my house than any other three on my block. He was holding a very large package that might have gone through the war.

It was from Argentina and it was from Alejandro. I sat down in the middle of the living room and very carefully cut away the string and paper. I almost went into shock. There were four 1/32 scale "Pucara's."

The box art was breath taking. It had the texture of an oil. The three-tone greens and tans of the plane against the pale blue sky was worth framing.

When I took the lid off the box I was really shocked. For a first-time kit I expected anything. What I saw was Tamiya quality. I could not believe it. No flash anywhere. The kit is of grey plastic with each part numbered. The clear parts are alone in their own plastic bag.

The wingspan is 17 & 3/4" and the fuselage is 17" long. The plane sits 6 & 3/4" high. Very impressive!!

The inside of the fuselage in the cockpit area is fully scribed and all the consoles are molded in. The seats have the ejector rings on the headrest and the face curtains molded into that. The parachute is molded into the bottom of the seat with the straps handing over the sides. You will not need Waldron buckles for this kit. The two instrument panels are like the Airfix 1/24 kits with the black frame and the clear lenses. All the levers and knobs are there. Each rudder pedal has four parts. All told there are 18parts to the cockpit alone.

The engine panels can be left off so you can show two Turbomeca Astazou XVIG Turboprop engines. The detail on these engines is over-whelming. Alone they could win a contest. The instruction sheet shows you where to drill holes in the engines for the wiring. You get a small spool of copper wire for this. One complaint, they only give you the barrels for the other side. You have to glue the barrels into the inside of the fuselage with the tips showing. They drill out the ends of the barrels. The two cannons that can be shown have ten parts with the magazines and ammo chutes. The 20mm shells are in the chute so you can make the tips for tracer, armor piercing and so on.

The clear parts are some of the best I have ever seen. They are not as thick as the Tamiya kits. The windshield wiper is given all by itself. You have to be very careful with that part, as it is very small.

If you are up on your "Pucara's" you know what kind of landing gear legs they have. The plane sits high. The struts have 9 parts to each leg on this model and you get the landing lights complete with clear lenses. Even the bulb is molded in.

You also get the four 7.62 machine guns for the wings and the gun bays can be left open. I guess this makes up for the cannon bay. The flaps can be dropped and this is shown in the instructions. You get all the assorted weapons including the standard 850 lb. Bombs and the Mk-8A laser guided "Vampire" rocket that Argentina has produced. Also, and this came as a real shock, the kit has two of the "Exocet" missiles. Each rocket has 6 parts. It looks as if Argentina wanted to make this kit as complete as possible.

The tires are rubber. You can make out the markings on them when you dry brush them. The tread is crisp and very well defined.

The decals are some of the best that I have ever seen. They look as if Micro-Scale had done them??? You get enough markings for two planes and the unit markings for the 35th A.Z.U. Sq. If you watched the news you might remember that some of the Pucaras that were shot down were from that squadron. There is a chance that the planes with these markings are o more. The colorful badge of the Gaucho riding a Pucara is one of a kind. By the way, the instructions are in Spanish, but you can buy a Spanish to English dictionary for a few bucks. It will be work it, believe me.

I can't praise this kit too much and ma very happy that my friend sent me four of them. For once, I find that words do fail me. This kit is so great I cannot believe that it is their first offering. I won't even tell you what the box art is on the sides of the box. I can only hope that they do not end up lie Tauro.

The price on the box is in pesos and it works out to just $10.00 U.S. With taxes and shipping it should run about $18.00. If you can, find someone to get one for you.
