Central Idea: Making sure homeless children live a good life without worries about education and affordable housing requires help from the community. Outline Format: Problem – Solution Question of : PolicyIntroductionAttention Getter: Homeless child’s testimony ( using a child like voice) My dad shot my mom…then we had to leave. He used to hit her and all, all the time but then with the shooting we left out house and moved to a shelter. He never hit us or anything but he always hit her and then shooting. Well, it was bad but we took his gun and then I got shot. I was really scared too but Mama said we would be safe here……Relevance: No one knows what the future hold and a perfect tomorrow is not promised. One day you can have everything you’ve dreamed of and the next day, you can wake up with nothing but the clothes on your back. Homelessness has no race limitations or age. Anyone can lose his or her job, anyone’s house can be unexpectedly burned down, and anyone can become a victim. Credibility: I have read many articles and researched the topic thoroughly. I once volunteered at a homeless shelter and got a chance to interact with several homeless families with children.Central Idea: Making sure homeless children live a good life without worries about education and affordable housing requires help from the community. Preview: Today I will discuss the major problems homeless families with children experience and attempt to persuade you to take a part in some possible solutions. Transition: First let us explore the hardships of these familiesBodyHomeless individuals have a never-ending list of problems but for homeless families with children the condition is even more complicated.According to What You Can Do To Help the Homeless by Thomas Kenyon the fastest growing population among the homeless are families with children. To begin, a major dilemma is adequate education for homeless children. Even when homeless children are enrolled in school they often are faced with additional problems that can interfere with their capability to learn.Teasing from peers and constant mental thought of where they will sleep or eat are among these interferences. According to the U.S. Department of Education, there are currently 200,000 school-aged homeless children in the United States 70,000 of whom do not attend school. Homeless children have a smaller chance of success rather than those in stable homes. Another massive problem is affordable housing. A growing number of working people are homeless but the shortage of affordable housing in this country is so limited that many people in low-paying jobs cannot afford the cost of housing.Abandonment and demolition have reduced the stock of affordable housing. Because of changes in the tax code, very little of this housing is being replaced. According to Anna Lou Dehavenon author of There’s no place like home, a recent study showed that 63% of low-income renters spend more than 50% of their income on housing. Most families with children who become homeless seek shelters or housing with friends. Transition : Now that you’ve heard the major problems, let’s focus on some possible solutions. First what our community can do is increase fund raising for small – scale shelters and build more low-income housing. By expanding small – scale shelters more homeless families can have a place to stay and begin constructing their lives. Everyone deserves a second chance at life. With more affordable housing, those who have low-income jobs will be able to pay their rent and maintain a healthy living environment for their children. Suggestions for community involvement.Tutor homeless childrenTeach homeless adults how to readProvide childcare servicesWrite to your state and federal representativesTransition: Thinking back to all of the major problems homeless families with children are faced with and considering these possible solutions…Conclusion Making sure homeless families with children live a good life without worries about education or affordable housing requires an increased amount of support from the community. Homeless families with children are limited to proper education and housing that they can afford. However, with increased community support, more low-income housing and your community involvement, this crisis can be stopped.Remembering a perfect tomorrow is not promised, I leave you with a quote from a middle class working mother of two who’s interview was found in Homeless Families edited by George Thorman, I quote, “ I never knew of anyone being homeless around here, now I am.” ................
