AP Human Geography Syllabus Semester I and IIHuman Geography– Advance Placement?1 credit towards graduation requirements?Mr. McDowell – Room 202????? Welcome to AP Human Geography. This course is offered to students who are interested in a class that introduces them to spatial concepts, landscape analysis, human social organization, and interaction between geographical phenomena. Students can expect to participate in college level work which will involve extensive outside reading and preparation, individual and group research projects, student led discussions, and written assessments.?- Course Description????This course will focus on the underlying principles and concepts of the social science of human geography. We will explore the various components that make up the discipline of human geography including development, resource use, urbanization, political geography, and more. Students will analyze global politics as well, in an effort to understand how human geography may impact the political and cultural boundaries of the globe. This course begins with an introductory look at the discipline in general. The initial unit studies how we assess trends in human geography. Included are the basic principles, concepts, and terminology essential to understanding the discipline. Students will then assess human geography in all of its various forms. Students will further understand political geography, development, industrialization, agriculture, services, industry, and other essential concepts. The final unit of this course analyzes human pursuit of resources and the potential effects this may have for the globe.- Course OverviewUnit I: Nature and PerspectivesUnit II: Population and MigrationUnit III: Cultural ProcessesUnit IV: Political GeographyUnit V: Economic GeographyUnit VI: Urban Patterns- Assessment and Grading?? Grades will be calculated using the following assessments: Notebook Grades, Portfolio, Essay tests, Research papers, Oral presentations??? The course will be graded using a total points system.? Each assignment will be assigned a point value.? Grades are then determined by how many points a student earns divided by the total points possible.???????????????????????????????????????????????????????A = 100%-90%; B = 89%-80%; C = 79%-70%; D = 69%-60%- Participation??? This AP course is primarily a seminar, discussion-based course.? Student participation in the discussions is critical to the success of the student.? Cheating or plagiarism is not acceptable.? Copying another person’s work, such as homework, class work, or an assessment is a form of cheating.? Students will not collaborate on assignments of any kind unless directed by me.? Questions in this class are designed to be answered with individual written responses and though answers may be similar in nature, they should never be exact copies or near exact copies.?
