Walmer Parish Churches

St. Mary’s, St. Saviour’s and Blessed Mary of Walmer

Open lives, open hands, open churches

In the Walmer and Cornilo Benefice

Sunday 21st February 2021 – The First Sunday of Lent

Collect

Traditional (Book of Common Prayer) – O Lord, who for our sake didst fast forty days and forty nights: Give us grace to use such abstinence, that, our flesh being subdued to the Spirit, we may ever obey thy godly motions in righteousness and true holiness, to thy honour and glory, who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end.

Contemporary (Common Worship) – Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ did fast forty days in the wilderness, and was tempted as we are, yet without sin: give us grace to discipline ourselves in obedience to thy Spirit; and, as thou knowest our weakness, so may we know thy power to save; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Traditional – NT 2 Cor. 6.1-10/Gos. Matt. 4.1-11

Contemporary – Gen. 9.8-17

God said to Noah and to his sons with him, ‘As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.’ God said, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.’ God said to Noah, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.’

Contemporary Gos. – Mark 1.9-15

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.’

And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness for forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.’

Lent Course

We are planning to run this course  during Lent.

"Caring for Creation

The human race is facing its greatest challenge: global warming, leading to climate change. This, along with the damage we have done, and are still doing to the environment, God’s wonderful creation, means that we all have to make radical changes to our whole way of life. Many of us who care about this issue are sometimes understandably quite pessimistic about the future. That’s where faith in God should make a difference…."

Courses will run for five weeks as follows:

Mondays at 2.00pm (starts 22nd Feb)

Wednesdays at 7.00pm (starts 24th Feb)

Wednesdays at 7.30pm (starts 24th Feb)

Thursdays at 7.30pm (starts 25th Feb)

There is a course booklet and a donation of around £5 will cover the cost of the book and the audio recordings that are used in the sessions.

Please do contact the parish office if you would be interested in joining a course – thank you Seth.

The Cornilo Book Group have decided to read a new book for Lent ‘Searching for Sunday’ by Rachel Held Evans. In the same way as our current book Take this Bread has been found inspiring, we are hoping for more thought-provoking insights from this one.

The book is available from Amazon, or Eden and when I last looked was only £1.99 for a Kindle Edition.

If you would like a ‘loan’ copy please let me know and I will arrange to buy sufficient copies.

We intend to start on Wednesday 24th February at 2pm on Zoom please 'sign up' by contacting  jean.winn@

A Memory of Rev’d Simon Lee by Martin Tapsell (Parish Archivist)

"Simon Lee brought dignity and reverence to the Wednesday morning communion service at St Saviour. His way of doing this was to speak to nobody before the service, but to robe up in the vestry, emerge and look at the chattering family of God until they fell silent and he began from the Book of Common Prayer. Afterwards he would speak to everyone as we moved to tea and coffee. I would have seen this more often were it not that my cleaner of 8 years came to me on most Wednesdays unless she was ill or on holiday".
