[pic] Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City was the place to be. Those who were there will have many cherished memories from witnessing the WPBA (Women’s Professional Billiards Association) first hand—up close and personal— just like they’ve always seen on TV. All week long the Pro’s intermingled among the amateurs and spectators telling stories and giving autographs, doing challenges, and playing in the mini’s when ever an opportunity came about.
Starting out with a Pro-Am on Wednesday October 14th: 32 amateurs pre-selected from past pool and winner’s circle events at Chinook Winds and OPAL-APA were tripled up with a WPBA pro at the 6:00 PM Pro-Am reception party on Wednesday night. Then, WPBA Tournament Director—Steve Tipton--matched up the sixteen teams with one another (3 Amateurs & 1 Pro) on the 9’ tables in the Pro Room and we got underway with the competition and fun. All the proceeds from the gate all went to the “My Sister’s Place” charity. The room was packed with spectators enjoying the festivities of the Pro-Am event and cheering on their favorite amateur or professional player. Once play began each match had approximately 20 minutes in which to win as many 9-Ball games as possible. Sharking became the fun thing to do and the WPBA pro’s certainly had their fair share of tricks in their possession. They played their opponents to perfection. Don & Nancy Palacios, Michael O’Jones, Jennifer Zea, Casey Hannam, Leonard Duval, Julie James and NormReddekoff from Salem APA were
among the 24 amateurs selected to participate in the event.
On Thursday October 15th the Modified Single elimination “Early Bird” 9-Ball Scotch Doubles started off promptly at 9:00 AM with a board of “75” APA pairs from all over the Northwest. We paid down through the top 24 places or roughly 32% of the field. Making it into the money and listed in ascending order of finish:
Finishing 17-24 and winning $100 “Waaait For It”—Phoenix Vu-Bui & Duane Allen. (Newberg);
Finishing 9-16 and winning $200 “AudBob” - Bob & Audrey Neill (Medford)
Finishing 5-8th and winning $300 “Big & Red”—Tony Romano & Bob George (Dallas).
Finishing 3-4th and winning $450 were the teams of: “Snow Balls”—Garnet & Jean Snow (Seattle); and “We Ta Did”—Cheryl Bednar & Jeff Kimball (Seattle).

Finishing 1st and winning $1,000 was the (OPAL) team of: “Deutch-Bahn”—Albert Cook & Eddy Bickle.
At 7:30 PM on Thursday evening Oct. 15th we began opening ceremony / players meeting. Then the 3-person team competition began first round-robin-flights with a with a total combined field of 87 teams entered. The field was broken down into 22 flights of 4 teams each with half the flights playing at a time.
By Friday night at 7:30 PM the Round Robin Portion of the 3-person tournament had been completed. And by 8:30 PM the new 32 team modified single elimination board had been drawn, set up, and underway as scheduled, with the winning teams in each of the 22 flights plus 10 teams who by luck of the draw were wild carded from 2nd place in their flights teams to fill up the remaining spaces in the 32 board. Saturday’s play found us resuming with the 3rd round of 3-person play at 9 AM followed by the start of the Weekender Scotch Doubles at 10: AM Followed by countless “On The Wire” hosted mini’s and the 128 person, double elimination, Lincoln City Open singles tournament. By Midnight it all had to be all be over to ready the area for the televised Women’s Pro Classic tournament semi-final and final matches.
The final match concluding the 3 person event was over at approximately 9:30 PM. On Saturday. In the past we have always continued the final rounds on to Sunday morning, but so as not to conflict with the WPBA ESPN televised pro finals it was necessary that we finish up with everything as early Saturday night so that the WPBA production staff could ready the room with stadium seating and develop an arena for television.
Many thanks to Head Referee John Blue who headed our great referee staff of Team Leaders—Larry Hande, and Dan Fendall with Referees: Terry Pinto, Kevin Logan, Julie James, , Morey Marks, Steve & Becky Chandler, and Kristie Hill-Pratt in monitoring the Modified Single Elimination format in phase II of the 3 person team event we managed to get everything done before giving out the door prizes at Midnight. The “Lincoln City Open” directed by the “On The Wire” staff, received 82 paid entries and paid the field all the way down through 24th place. The top 8 place finishers were: Mark Haddan of Denver who took the “bragging rights” and the $450 1st Prize, Randy Petz from Salem got $300 for 2nd, Randy Baker of Coos Bay, got $200 for 3rd, Mike Grimm of Portland, got $160 for 4th, Iris Ranola, WPBA Pro, & Michael Deictchman, of Portland each received $100 for 5/6th, and Steve Lingelbach, & Mike Jensen, both from Portland, each got $80 for 7/8th.
THE GRAND PRIZE $1,200 TRIP DRAWING: was the last thing to be held and it was only fitting that since we had the honor of her presence that it would be APA President Renee’ Lyle to be given the task of drawing out the winning ticket. Every person who had entered and played in either of the two Scotch doubles or 3-person team events had a ticket entered for them in the drawing. To win the trip you had to be (1) present in the drawing room and (2) have in your possession a valid Chinook Winds winner’s circle card which incidentally is free and all one needs do is go to the winner’s circle booth and ask for one. Being present without a valid Winner’s Circle card rendered you ineligible to receive the prize. So...unlike a couple of years ago where we went through about 12 different drawings of names who lost out winning the $1200 trip for 2 to Hawaii for a variety of reasons—not present, didn’t have a winner’s circle card, etc. etc. This year though the very first name out of the bucket that was drawn was Chris Durant from Jefferson. Guess What? He wasn’t present—So back in the bucket went Renee’s Hand and the next name called and he was present, and he indeed had a “Valid” winner’s circle card with his name on it and with a “Cheesy Cat” grin on his face, he ambled his way to the control table to claim the grand prize! The winner—an OPAL-APA member Dan Rodriguez!
