Pentecost Sunday

Sunday Worship Bulletin

April 19, 2009

2nd Sunday of Easter

Westminster Presbyterian Church extends an enthusiastic welcome, in Christ’s name,

to all who would worship here or join us in fellowship.

We affirm that there can be no exclusion within the body of Christ.

We invite all children of God to join us as disciples of Christ

and participate fully in the life of our congregation.

1502 West 13th Street · Wilmington, DE 19806

Welcome to Westminster

Whether you are worshiping at Westminster for the first time or returning for a visit, the pastors and members sincerely welcome you in the name of Christ. Following our worship service, we invite you to meet an Ambassador at the back of the sanctuary. We have a gift for you, and would like to share information regarding our many programs for children, youth and adults. An Ambassador can guide you to the hospitality area to enjoy fellowship or lead you on a tour of the church. We hope you will make Westminster your church home and discover ways to grow in faith.

Children are welcome in worship! Westminster’s Kids’ Notes and worship bags are available each Sunday from the ushers. Kids’ Notes, a weekly companion to Westminster’s morning worship, emphasizes listening and seeing during worship. The bags include storybooks for children of all ages, coloring paper and crayons, a children’s bulletin for those age three to six, and bookmarks for hymns and Scripture.

Worship Aids - Large print Presbyterian Hymnals and hearing devices may be obtained from an usher. If you experience a problem with a hearing device, ask an usher for a new one.

Audio tapes and DVD’s of recent Westminster worship services are available. Please use the sign-out sheet when you borrow them from the front desk. Printed sermons are available on the literature tables the following week and on our website at .

The Lord’s Supper is celebrated the first Sunday of the month at both services.

Baptisms - If you wish to schedule a baptism, please contact Suzie Hurlock (302) 654-5214, ext. 127.

The flowers in the sanctuary today are given to the glory of God and in appreciation to members and friends of Westminster from Roger W. Atkins in celebration of his 18 years of service.”

Sanctuary Flowers - Consider giving the sanctuary flowers for Sunday worship. Your gift of God’s natural beauty to remember or honor loved ones, or to celebrate an event, expresses praise and thanksgiving to God. Please contact Linda Watson during business hours at 302-571-6719or lwatson@.

Are you wearing a nametag? It is always a friendly gesture to do so here at Westminster. Whether you are a longtime member or new to the church, wearing a nametag allows others the opportunity to meet you, greet you by name, and become more familiar with others at church. Nametags and markers are available in baskets at all major entrances. Do not assume everyone knows who you are. Extend hospitality, kindness and friendship by wearing a nametag every Sunday.

The deadline for the Sunday bulletin and the “Westminster Weekly Word” is Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.

Send announcements and articles for either of the publications to news@.

ORDER OF WORSHIP AT 9:00 A.M.

Preparation for Worship

Many of us Christians who feel so at home in our church may, in fact, be miles away from God.

As Karl Barth observed, “Many people go to church to make their last stand against God.”

William Sloane Coffin

Organ Prelude Divertimento Percy Whitlock

Call to Worship

This I call to mind, and therefore I have hope:

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases,

God’s mercies never come to an end;

They are new every morning; great is God’s faithfulness! Lamentations 3:21-23

*Hymn No. 118 “The Day of Resurrection!” lancashire

Call to Confession

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

If we confess our sins,

God who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins

and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. I John 1:8-9

Prayer of Confession

O God of perilous grace and mercy,

in raising Jesus from the grave,

you shattered the power of sin and death.

Yet we confess that we remain captive to doubt and fear,

bound by the ways that lead to death.

We overlook the treasure you offer in the good news of Jesus Christ

looking instead for safety and security, comfort and ease.

We fear the cost and uncertainty of the Gospel.

Forgive us, God of mercy.

Help us to trust your power to change our lives and make us new,

so that we can move closer to the risky, wonderful, transforming way of Christ.

Silent Prayer

At the asterisk (*), please stand as you are able.

Assurance of God’s Forgiveness

Anthem “With a Voice of Singing” Martin Shaw

Westminster Choir

With a voice of singing declare ye this, and let it be heard, Alleluia. Utter it even unto the ends of the earth. The Lord hath delivered his people. O be joyful in God, all ye lands, O sing praises to the honor of his name, make his praise to be glorious.

Opening Words

In baptism, we die with Christ and rise with him to a new life.

As Paul wrote to the church in Rome:

“Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus

were baptized into his death?

We have been buried with him by baptism into death,

so that as Christ was raised from the dead,

we too might walk in newness of life.”

“We are united with Christ in a death like his,

so that we will be united with him in a resurrection like his.”

Questions For Parents and the Congregation

Do you acknowledge Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? We do.

Relying on God’s grace, do you promise to live the Christian faith

and to teach that faith to your daughter? We do.

Will we, the people of the church, promise to nurture and support Amanda

and her parents, and will we encourage her to become a faithful Christian? We will.

*Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord;

who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried;

he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead;

he ascended into heaven,

and sitteth on the right hand of

God the Father Almighty;

from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church;

the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins;

the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer Following Baptism

Eternal God,

You are our light and our salvation.

From the deep waters of death

you have raised your Son to life in triumph.

Grant that all who have been born anew by water and the Spirit

may daily be renewed in your image,

walk by the light of faith,

and serve you in newness of life;

through your anointed Son, Jesus Christ,

to whom with you and the Holy Spirit

we lift our voices of praise.

Blessed be God, Creator, Christ, and Holy Spirit, one God forever. Amen.

ADULT EDUCATION CLASSES

Today, 10:10 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Holy Adventure Leader: Greg Jones, through May 3, in Classroom 6. Using the book, Holy Adventure by Bruce Epperly, we will discuss ways for us to embrace life as the adventure God wants us to experience no matter what our age is. Holy Adventure is an alternative to Rick Warren’s book, The Purpose Driven Life. Warren (and the older vision of Christianity) believes that God determined a plan for your life previous to your existence and your job is to figure out God’s plan. Epperly, (and the emerging vision of Christianity) believes that your life is a holy adventure in which you are partners with God in shaping who you will become and what the universe will become. Our study together will not only focus on our understanding of God, but will include practical activities designed to help you become more aware of God’s presence in your life and the daily possibilities for personal transformation and the healing of our world. Class participants will need to purchase the book, Holy Adventure. Copies of the book will be available at the class for $12.

Forgiveness Leaders: Mike Gnade and Margo Reign, beginning today through May 17, in the Meeting Room. The Lord’s Prayer says, “forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors”. It is something Christ has commanded us to do. But it is often one of the hardest things we will ever do. Come join us for a five week class as we together explore, what is forgiveness, why we should forgive, and discuss two of the Biblical stories of forgiveness: Joseph and the Coat of Many Colors and The Prodigal Son.

Parents with Young Children Coordinator: Rick Thomas; Ruth Christie Room. Classes are built around a powerful, postmodern DVD series, called Nooma. These DVDs are short (11–15 minutes each) and potent. Each viewing session deals with a particular “real life” topic as seen through Jesus’ perspective, and serves as a means to generate discussion and sharing. Nooma is an invitation to search, question, and join the conversation.

“The Search for Joy: C.S. Lewis, His Life and His Christian Faith.” This series about the author of the Chronicles of Narnia goes through May 17, in the Daughtry House Classroom across 13th Street. Due to the length of the videos, this class begins promptly at 10:10 a.m. As a teenager C.S. Lewis was a proclaimed atheist. But at the age of 33, he became a Christian. His friendship with JRR Tolkien, of Lord of the Rings fame, was a primary catalyst in his conversion. This is a powerful video series that looks at the man, his life, his writings, his friends and his faith – which brought him great joy. Senior High School students are welcome.

|Congregational Care and Prayer |

Please remember in your prayers:

❖ Those recently hospitalized include Charles Reeder, D. Pauline Best and Forrest Guth.

❖ Westminster’s homebound family who can no longer attend worship with us. Send a card, say a prayer, visit! This week we ask you to remember Jack Remsen, HC-3825, and Grace Austin, Apartment 3613, Methodist Country House, 4830 Kennett Pike, Wilmington, DE 19807.

Our brothers and sisters in global mission: Sue Makin, MD, Malawi; Delle McCormick, Southwest Border; Roger and Gloria Marriott, Dennis and Maribel Smith and the Mam Presbytery, Guatamala; Timothee Kalonji Matadi, Cecilé de Sweemer, MD, Pastor Jean-Marc Katujudi Nkuna and members of the Kamulumba-Ditalala Parish, Congo; Rev. Dr. Lyle and Terry Dykstra, PCUSA Mission Volunteers, Presbyterian University, Kenya. They are praying for us; let us also pray for them.

Pray for those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan often seem very far away and it is easy to forget that Americans, Iraqis, Afghans and coalition forces continue to die. As Christians, we are called to pray for an end to violence, and for the spreading of God’s kingdom of peace and justice. It is also important for us to remember in prayer the families who grieve the loss of their loved ones who have died in these wars. The number of Americans serving in our Armed Forces who have died in these two wars is 4,273 (as of April 16.) The number of Iraqis and Afghans who have been killed is many times greater, but no agreed upon number exists. Those Americans who have died most recently are:

Sergeant Raul Moncada, age 29, of Madera, California, died April 13

Specialist Michael J. Anaya, age 23, of Crestview, Florida, died April 12

Staff Sergeant Gary L. Woods, Jr., age 24, of Lebanon Junction, Kentucky died April 10

Staff Sergeant Bryan E. Hall, age 32, of Elk Grove, California, died April 10

Corporal Jason G. Pautsch, age 20, of Davenport, Iowa, died April 10

Private 2nd Class Bryce E. Gautier, age 22, of Cypress, California, died April 10

Sergeant Edward Forrest, age 25, of Fenton, Missouri, died April 10

Airman 1st Class Jacob I. Ramsey, age 20, of Hesperia, California, died April 10

Lance Corporal Blaise A. Oleski, age 22, of Holland Patent, New York, died April 8

Pray for those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. If there is someone in your family who is serving in Iraq or Afghanistan please call or email Maureen Ogden (302-654-5214 ext. 126 or maureen@) with his or her name so that we can put the name on a prayer list.

Westminster’s Covenant Prayer Group is committed to praying weekly for specific needs of the faith community. Anyone with prayer requests may leave a confidential message on 302-654-5848, ext. 335, or fill out a prayer request card (in the pew pocket) and place it in the offering plate.

A Centering Prayer time occurs every Thursday at noon in the Ruth Christie Room. Anyone is welcome to participate. Basically, those who come spend thirty minutes in silence. Sometimes we have sacred music playing in the background. Silence allows us time and space to empty our minds, quiet our brains’ chatter, and be still and attentive to God.

If you have come to worship with a heavy heart – worried or confused, anxious or grieving, hurting or fearful about something in your life – a Stephen Minister is available to meet with you following the service and to offer compassionate support. Just go to the piano in the sanctuary at the conclusion of the service, and someone with a Stephen Minister nametag will be there to speak with you.

|News To Note |

Service of celebration: You are invited to join with the congregation of West Presbyterian Church for a special service at 3 o’clock this afternoon celebrating their faithful 140 years of mission and ministry. The church will be closing its doors for the last time at the end of this month.

Yoga classes are held in Rodney Chapel each week Thursdays (5:30 – 6:40 p.m.) and Saturdays (10 – 11 a.m.) Yoga benefits the body, mind, and spirit. Wear comfortable clothing, bring a mat, and join us. Suggested donation is $10 to cover costs of instructor and building use, but pay as you are able. Thursday night yoga will resume on April 23.

Samaritans once again need furniture, especially beds. We have outstanding requests from people in need of furniture. If you have anything you can donate please call John Bowman at 984-1181 or email him at johnrbowman@.

Join the Phix-It Corps! Twice a month a dedicated group of volunteers meet at the Church to help “Phix” things. This group is a major reason the Church property is so well maintained. We rely on them to attend to all those small items that left alone can become big headaches. The jobs vary from light to heavy and everything in between. The ministry is one of fellowship, fun and accomplishment. Please consider joining this small group on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month at 8:30 am. If you have any questions, please contact Jeff Lippincott at home 302-655-9080, on his cell 302-494-2830, or by email at maddogdoc25@.

Close Knit. Be a part of our knitting fellowship at church to knit prayer shawls for members of our congregation and wool helmet liners for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our soldiers need these liners to make the helmets absorbent and more comfortable. Each knitter provides his/her own materials. See these websites: ( and helmetliner). We will provide help for beginner knitters! Join us from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Ruth Christie Room on the 1st and 3rd Mondays through May. Please call Pam Mann (302-234-6644,) Carol Shelly (302-478-3992) or Ellen Slade (302-654-3645) for additional information.

Westminster's 9th trip to Rebuild Hope In New Orleans (RHINO) is worshiping this morning at our sister church, Berean Presbyterian Church in New Orleans.  The trip's participants: Jerry and Sue Spilecki, Betty and Jac Crowell, Susan Heinsohn, Kris and Neely Qualls, Bob, Linda and Josh Cox and Mary Beth Davis, spent the week building homes on Ferry Place, a one-block street near the Mississippi River. Please remember the group in your prayers as they return home this evening and look for pictures of the trip in the next issue of the CHIMES.

April Is Earth Month at WPC. Earth Day is April 22, and in light of that the Urban Mission focus for April is on the environment, specifically on our most precious resource – water. Only three tenths of one percent of the water on earth is suitable for human use, and that small amount is jeopardized by climate change, waste and pollution. Join us on today (10 am, classroom 5) when environmentalist and former DNREC head Nick DiPasquale will give us an overview of water issues in Delaware. Then, come to Grace Hall on this Friday evening at 7 pm to see the award winning film “FLOW” – which describes the rapidly growing water crisis on both a human and a global scale and addresses the difficult question: “Can anyone really own water?”

Celebrate EARTH DAY take one of these actions to save our rapidly dwindling water supply. Turn the water off while brushing your teeth or shaving. Cut showers down to five minutes. Keep up with leaky toilets and faucets. Collect and reuse you “warm-up” water. Ditch bottled water. Scrape, don’t rinse, your dishes before loading them in the dishwasher. Run your dishwasher only when it’s full. Throw your food scraps in a compost bin or in the trash rather the running them down the garbage disposal. Outfit your garden hose with an automatic shutoff nozzle or with a manual timer. Use an eco friendly car wash. Sweep or rake your driveway, sidewalk, patio or pool deck rather than hosing them down to remove leave and debris. Invest in a rain barrel.

Friendship House has initiated an AMBASSADOR program to spread the F.H. story throughout its affiliated faith community. This program has multiple goals, such as strengthening communications between F.H. and member churches, creating awareness and increasing understanding of F.H. by interacting with the mission outreach committees, volunteer opportunities, promoting the Church Referral program, and encouraging parishioners to visit and observe F.H. quarterly Board meetings. An introductory meeting about this program will be held on Tuesday, April 21, from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. at WPC. All are invited. Please RSVP your plans to attend this meeting to Jim Clark at jjclark55@ or John Doyle at jadnldj@ .

Dining Out For Life. On Thursday, April 30, 2008, AIDS Delaware is having its annual Dining Out for Life event. As we have done the past ten years, we extend a special invitation for you to participate in this event at Buckley’s Tavern, 6:30 p.m. Each participating restaurant will donate 33% of their total food profits from their April 30th receipts to AIDS Delaware! The funds support AIDS Delaware’s case management services, education and outreach programs, counseling and testing initiatives, and its Food Closet. This is a fun and easy way to support AIDS Delaware and also have a nice fellowship dinner. Please let José Varela know if you are able to attend by Tuesday in order to make the appropriate reservation for our group. We hope you can come and join us. You may call José at 302-652-6776, or email josecaleno@.

Stock Market got you down? Looking for something safe to invest in? Buy a “share” of the Youth Mission Trip to Guatemala. The youth of the church are always a safe investment. They are guaranteed to increase in value. (And the youth would never award themselves with undeserved bonuses.)

This summer 11 youth and 3 adults from Westminster will travel to Zacapa, Guatemala to experience life in the developing world, expand their horizons and make a difference in the world. On the Youth Mission Trip 2009, our youth will work with people who live in extreme poverty, children in orphanages, and families who reside in garbage dumps. The youth of our church will change lives and their lives will be changed forever.

For just $20 dollars you can own one share of the Youth Mission Trip. Your share entitles you to:

The opportunity to widen the horizons of a young mind,

Touch countless lives in Guatemala,

A seat at the Shareholders’ Luncheon in June where you will learn about how your investment has multiplied into unbelievable-value.

Shares are for sale before and after worship, at the reception desk and in the Holy Toast Café, and from all participating members of the Youth Mission Trip 2009. There is no limit to the amount of shares each person can buy. Now is the time to invest in something that can only go up in value!

We recently returned from another trip to Guatemala, where we again met with women’s cooperatives. We purchased a large selection of crafts—jewelry, handbags, textiles, Christmas decorations, nativities, etc. The crafts are for sale and all proceeds are sent to Guatemala to assist people in need. With the money we raised last year, we funded two micro-lending projects; one for a women’s weaving cooperative, and the other a tilapia fish farm.

We want to continue helping the indigenous people.You’re invited for coffee, tea and donuts. Come see what we brought back; learn a little about the people who made it; browse; shop! Bring a friend or two.
