February 7, 2010

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Westminster Presbyterian Church extends an enthusiastic welcome, in Christ’s name,

to all who would worship here or join us in fellowship.

We affirm that there can be no exclusion within the body of Christ.

We invite all children of God to join us as disciples of Christ

and participate fully in the life of our congregation.

Welcome to Westminster

Whether you are worshiping at Westminster for the first time or returning for a visit,

we sincerely welcome you in the name of Christ!

← Following our worship service, we invite you to meet today’s “ambassador,” Marlys Kerr, at the back of the sanctuary. She will have a gift for you, and can share information regarding our many ministries for children, youth and adults. She can also guide you to the hospitality area to enjoy fellowship or lead you on a tour of the church.

← Children are welcome in worship! Westminster’s Kids’ Notes and worship bags are available each Sunday from the ushers. Kids’ Notes, a weekly companion to Westminster’s morning worship, emphasizes listening and seeing during worship. The bags include storybooks for children of all ages, coloring paper and crayons, a children’s bulletin for those age three to six, and bookmarks for hymns and Scripture.

← The Lord’s Supper is celebrated this morning at both services.

← Worship Aids – You may obtain large print Presbyterian Hymnals and hearing devices from any usher.

Offertory Anthem “How Beauteous Are Their Feet” Charles Villiers Stanford

Westminster Choir

How beauteous are their feet How happy are our ears

Who stand on Sion’s hill, That hear this joyful sound,

Who bring salvation on their tongues, Which kings and prophets waited for,

And words of peace instil! And sought, but never found!

How blessed are our eyes The Lord makes bare his arm

That see this heav’nly light! Through all the earth abroad;

Prophets and kings desired it long, Let ev’ry nation now behold

But died without the sight. Their Saviour and their God.

Celebration Of The Lord’s Supper

Invitation to the Lord’s Table

The Lord’s Supper invites us to embark on a life-long journey of pursuing Christ.

We seek to be faithful in our pursuit

and open to discovering his truth for our lives.

Where will you unearth Christ today

and what will you learn from your encounter?

We do not know where we will discern the movement of Christ’s Spirit,

but we will seek to be attentive to the Spirit’s movement in our lives.

Receive what is more precious than gold!

We will receive the Body of Christ.

Cherish what is more fragrant than frankincense or myrrh!

We will cherish the Cup of Salvation.

Dr. Sue Makin’s Mission Experiences

Join us in Rodney Chapel this morning as Dr. Sue Makin speaks about her mission work in Malawi and other parts of Africa. After more than 15 years as a medical missionary in Africa, Dr. Makin is returning to the US and will begin a new chapter of life and work, following a period of mission interpretation across the PCUSA.

There will also be a lunch at 12:15 p.m. today in Community Hall, honoring Dr. Makin for her work, and learning how we may continue to support our sisters and brothers in Africa.

Speaking of Faith: Why Religion Matters and How to Talk About It

A discussion of Krista Tippett’s book, led by Anne Ledbetter in Classroom 5.

How do we ponder the abiding questions of faith, doubt and meaning that are at the heart of human experience? How may we begin to build honest and respectful interfaith dialogue concerning the meaning of faith and how we live our faith in the world?

Paul's Hymn to Love – 1 Corinthians 13 (through February 14)

Join us in Daughtry House to explore this familiar and much loved passage as Dr. Kenneth E. Bailey provides new insights and understanding as he explains these words as they would have been understood by first century individuals living in the Middle East.

Ongoing Classes:

Parenting

Group led, with Yvonne Nass, Parenting Consultant, leading the first Sunday of each month

Ruth Christie Room

Westminster By Heart

Led by Biblical Storytellers Mary-beth Howard and Shelley Gnade in the Meeting Room

Upcoming Classes:

Bible Study on Romans (February 14 – March 28) in Classroom 6

Greg Jones will teach this class on Paul’s Letter to the Romans, which is widely acclaimed as Paul’s masterpiece. On February 14, Dr. Jones will summarize the first five chapters which he taught in the fall. You will learn why Paul wrote this letter, how he resolved the dilemma of whether God had abandoned the Jews in favor of Christians and how this letter impacts our lives today. Everyone is welcome to join this class.

Hope for the Future: Christian-Muslim Dialogue, (February 14 – March 14) in Rodney Chapel

Using Eboo Patel’s book Acts of Faith as a springboard, Presbyterian pastor Tom Davis will lead a discussion on the importance of interfaith dialogue, particularly among our youth. After 9/11 Eboo Patel realized that the hijackers were young Muslim men from middle class families who had been indoctrinated by Muslim fundamentalists with a terrorist agenda. Out of his own convictions that we must be proactive to counter such deception, Patel founded the Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC) in his hometown of Chicago. IFYC now has chapters across the country and initiates work projects around the world. This class will also feature guest speakers including local high school students working on starting an IFYC in Wilmington, and Muslim students from the Rumi Forum at the University of Delaware.

|Worship Notes |

The flowers in the sanctuary today are given to the glory of God by the Kline family in loving memory of Ann.

Sanctuary Flowers - Consider giving the sanctuary flowers for Sunday worship. Your gift of God’s natural beauty to remember or honor loved ones, or to celebrate an event, expresses praise and thanksgiving to God. Please contact Linda Watson during business hours at 302-571-6719 or lwatson@. Available dates for flowers are February 14 and 28 and April 11 and 18.

Are you wearing a nametag? Whether you are a longtime member or new to the church, wearing a nametag provides others the opportunity to meet you, greet you by name, and for you to become more familiar with others at church. Nametags and markers are in baskets at all major entrances. Extend hospitality and friendship by wearing a nametag every Sunday.

“Westminster to Go” Audio tapes and DVD’s of recent Westminster worship services are available. Please use the sign-out sheet when you borrow them from the front desk. Printed sermons are available on the literature tables the following week and on our website at .
