CHRISTMAS EVE

December 24, 2020

4:00 p.m.

“One Strange Night…One Strange Year

….Still, the Weary World Rejoices!”

Prelude Songs

“Angels We Have Heard on High”

Angels we have heard on high, sweetly singing o’er the plains, and the mountains in reply, echoing their joyous strains.

refrain…Gloria in excelsis Deo. Gloria in excelsis Deo

Come to Bethlehem and see him whose birth the angels sing; come, adore on bended knee Christ the Lord, the newborn king.

“O Little Town of Bethlehem”

O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by; yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light. The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary, and, gathered all above while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wond’ring love. O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth, and praises sing to God the king, and peace to all the earth!

O holy child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; oh, come to us, abide with us, our Lord Immanuel!

“It Came upon the Midnight Clear”

It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold: “Peace on the earth, good will to all, from heav’n’s all gracious king.” The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing.

For lo! The days are hast’ning on, by prophets seen of old, when with the ever circling years shall come the time foretold, when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling, and all the world give back the song which now the angels sing.

“Away in a Manger”

Away in a manger, no crib for his bed, the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head; the stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing; the baby awakes, but little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes. I love you, Lord Jesus; look down from the sky and stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.

Be near me Lord Jesus; I ask you to stay close by me forever and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in your tender care and fit us for heaven to live with you there.

“Good Christian Friends, Rejoice”

Good Christian friends, rejoice with heart and soul and voice; give ye heed to what we say: Jesus Christ is born today; ox and ass before him bow, and he is in the manger now. Christ is born today! Christ is born today!

Good Christian friends, rejoice with heart and soul and voice; now ye need not fear the grave; Jesus Christ was born to save! Calls you one and calls you all to gain the everlasting hall. Christ was born to save! Christ was born to save!

“I Am So Glad Each Christmas Eve”

I am so glad each Christmas Eve, the night of Jesus’ birth! Then like the sun the star shone forth, and angels sang on earth.

The little child in Bethlehem, he was a king indeed! For he came down from heav’n above to help a world in need.

And so I love each Christmas Eve, and I love Jesus too; and that he loves me every day I know so well is true.

Greeting

The true light that enlightens everyone has come into the world! God be

with you all. And also with you. Let us pray…

Almighty God, you made this holy night shine with the brightness of the true Light. Grant that here on earth we may walk in the light of Jesus' presence and in the last day wake to the brightness of his glory; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Hymn "Oh, Come, All Ye Faithful"

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant! O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem; come and behold him, born the king of angels:

refrain…O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!

Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning; Jesus, to thee be glory giv’n! Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing:

First Reading Isaiah 9:2-7

Second Reading Titus 2:11-14

Hymn “Silent Night, Holy Night”

Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright round yon virgin mother and child, Holy Infant, so tender and mild, sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night! Son of God, love’s pure light radiant beams from your holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at your birth, Jesus Lord at your birth.

Gospel Acclamation

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it!

The Holy Christmas Gospel

Luke 2:1-5

Hymn "The First Noel”

The first Noel the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; in fields where they lay, keeping their sheep, on a cold winter’s night that was so deep.

refrain…Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel! Born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and say a star shining in the east beyond them far; and to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night.

Luke 2:6-14

Hymn "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”

Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn king; peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled.” Joyful, all ye nations rise; join the triumph of the skies; with angelic host proclaim, “Christ is born in Bethlehem!”

refrain…Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn king!”

Hail the heav’n born Prince of peace! Hail the Sun of righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, ris’n with healing in his wings. Mild he lays his glory by, born that we no more may die, born to raise each child of earth, born to give us second birth.

Luke 2:15-20

Christmas Message

Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the live of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the Church

On this holy night in which God joins heaven and earth, let us offer our prayers for the church, the world, and all those in need…

Good and gracious God, on this holy night you gave us your Son, the Lord of the universe, wrapped in swaddling clothes, the Savior of all, lying in a manger. Draw us into the mystery of your love. Join our voices with the heavenly host, that we may sing your glory on high.

The weary world rejoices.

Give us a place among the shepherds, that we may find the one for whom we have waited, Jesus Christ, your Word made flesh, the Eternal Light.

The weary world rejoices.

We pray for the Church around the world as it celebrates the birth of Christ. Bless all those who are entrusted with Christian ministry that your Word might be proclaimed with truth and courage.

The weary world rejoices.

Bestow your wisdom on all who govern, that in honoring the earth and its diverse races, cultures, and religions, we may celebrate the light of this holy night. Grant reconciliation to those surrounded with conflict and violence, that they may live in the peace of this holy night.

The weary world rejoices.

We pray for all who are cold, hungry, or alone this night. Embrace with your tender care all who wander alone or have no place to lay their head, they may experience the hope of this holy night.

The weary world rejoices.

We pray for all who are anxious, depressed, or ill. Draw near to those who find this season a source of pain or grief, and to all who are suffering or sick, especially those we remember in our own hearts ... that they may feel the comfort of this holy night. The weary world rejoices.

We pray for families of all shapes, sizes and configurations. Strengthen them in the bonds of love and commitment, that they may delight in the joy of this holy night. The weary world rejoices.

Let us pray for ourselves and for the blessings of this holy night. Open our hearts to your presence, that we may be transformed by Jesus’ birth on this holy night.

The weary world rejoices.

We us give thanks for all the faithful departed who have been bearers of the Word made flesh. Give us grace to follow your holy ones in lives of faith and commitment, that we may we join with the hosts of heaven in singing the praises of this holy night.

The weary world rejoices.

All these things and whatever else you see that we need, grant us, O God, for the sake of him who died and rose again, and now lives and reigns within the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Benediction

May you be filled with the wonder of Mary, the commitment of Joseph, the joy of the angels, the eagerness of the shepherds, the determination of the magi, and the peace of the Christ child. Almighty God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit bless you now and forever. Amen.

Your light has come. Let the weary world rejoice! Joy to the world!

Sending Hymn "Joy to the World"

Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her king; let ev’ry heart prepare him room and heav’n and nature sing, and heav’n and nature sing, and heav’n and heav’n and nature sing.

Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns! Let all their songs employ, while fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy, repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

No more let sin and sorrow grow nor thorns infest the ground; he comes to make his blessings flow far as the curse is found, far as the curse is found, far as, far as the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace and makes the nations prove the glories of his righteousness and wonders of his love, and wonders of his love, and wonders, wonders of his love.

Thank you
