Dianne Segsworth and I attended the recent Wesley Contact Network Meeting at 52 Catherine Street North. Here are recent updates that you may be interested in.

Mission and Outreach Committee

1.Wesley Day Centre on Ferguson Avenue, Hamilton

The Wesley Day Centre, that provides services for the most vulnerable, has remained open thanks to the one time funding from the City of Hamilton, Hamilton Community Foundation, and the United Way Halton and Hamilton and generous donors such as you.

The land lord, Wesley Community Homes, has confirmed that the lease for 195 Ferguson Avenue, North ends on March 31 and will not be renewed. Originally one enterprise, the Province separated Wesley Community Homes and The Wesley Day Centre several years so that they are now two distinct entities. Wesley Community Homes provides low income rental and wishes to expand. The presence of the most vulnerable clients that need the services of the Day Centre are a consideration in their decision not to continue the lease.

And so Wesley is working closely with the City if Hamilton to find a new location for an amalgamated Day Centre and Consumption and Treatment Services. The location needs to be a dedicated and accessible, ideally zoned as medical and in the area flanked by Queen Street, Barton, Ferguson and Main.

2. All other Wesley locations that provide programs, services and supports for children, young adults, refugees and low income people are situated in a number of satellite locations through out the city of Hamilton and are not affected by the Day Centre situation. The programs continue to thrive and provide valuable resources and support to Wesley clients.

3. Wesley continues to expand into Halton. They are helping to support Halton Women’s Place.

4. A Sunday Dinner Schedule has been drafted. Lowville has not signed up at this time but if there are people interested in taking on a Sunday Dinner in the next year, please let me know.

5. Christmas and Holiday Store and White Gift Sunday

White Gift Sunday will be held on Sunday, December 8. Again you are invited to donate items for the Wesley Christmas and Holiday Store. A notice will be placed in the upcoming bulletins to give you ideas to help you with your shopping. As well information flyers from Wesley for different age groups.

Pioneer Memorial United Church, in Hamilton will once again host the Christmas Store. I will be delivering the donations after church on the 8th and will stay to help for a few hours with sorting and shelving at Pioneer Memorial Church. If anyone would like to join me or would like to perhaps volunteer at another time, I will post the schedule. Please let me know if you can help.

6. Warm feet

One of the challenges of living on the street is trying to keep your feet warm and dry. In January, the Mission and Outreach committee would like to plan a fun Sunday to help replenish socks, mitts and toques supply at Wesley. Keep tuned for the announcement.

7. Executive Director, Dalit Garry is stepping down from her Executive Director role as of December 31, 2019 to step away from full time work and is looking forward to a different pace of life in the future. A selection committee has been set up. We look forward to hearing news of a new Director.

8. Wesley Open House

Thursday, November 12 from 4 to 6 at 52 Catharine Street North. This is a special event where you can enjoy talking to staff and see all the accomplishments of the past year.

9. Post it Notes to support Wesley

During the next couple of Sundays pick up a package of Post-it-Notes for a loonie.
