God, Gold and Glory - World History

God, Gold and Glory

Primary Source Activity

The three motives of the European explorers have been stated by historians as “God, Gold and Glory,” and not always in that order. Fortunately, many of the explorers left us diaries, letters and journals of their experiences. Using those records, cite references to those three motives.

In the “Passage” column, quote the passage (a complete sentence, or as much of a complete sentence as possible). In the second column, identify the explorer. In longer accounts, it is a good hint is to focus on the first couple and last couple of paragraphs

God: thanking God, discussing conversion of natives

Gold: looking for gold itself, or other money making ventures

Glory: the explorer praising themselves or their kings and queens

2) From their actions that we have studied, which motive appeared to be the most important? Explain using examples.
