Westminster Presbyterian Church extends an enthusiastic welcome, in Christ’s name,
to all who would worship here or join us in fellowship.

Welcome to Westminster
Whether you are worshiping at Westminster for the first time or returning for a visit,
we sincerely welcome you in the name of Christ!
← Following our 9:00 a.m. worship service, we invite you to meet today’s “ambassador,” Julia Stone, at the back of the sanctuary. She will have a gift for you, and can share information regarding our many ministries for children, youth and adults. She can also guide you to the hospitality area to enjoy fellowship or lead you on a tour of the church.
← Children are welcome in worship! Westminster’s Kids’ Notes and worship bags are available each Sunday from the ushers. Kids’ Notes, a weekly companion to Westminster’s morning worship, emphasizes listening and seeing during worship. The bags include storybooks for children of all ages, coloring paper and crayons, a children’s bulletin for those age three to six, and bookmarks for hymns and Scripture.

Call to Worship
As Jesus stood in Jordan’s muddy waters,
we stand in the muddy waters of our lives.
As Jesus submitted to John’s baptism,
we submit our lives to God’s transforming touch.
As Jesus trusted God’s Spirit to fill him with wisdom,
we trust God’s Spirit to show us the way.
As Jesus left the Jordan to give his life to God,
we will leave here today with a renewed sense of God’s presence in our lives.
*Hymn No. 10 “On Jordan’s Bank the Baptist’s Cry” Winchester new
Call to Confession
Love is at the heart of who we are,
but we often allow anger or indifference to rule our emotions.
Let us confess the ways we have failed to love others.
Prayer of Confession
Merciful God, in baptism you promise forgiveness and new life
as you bind us to the Body of Christ.
We confess that we remain so preoccupied with ourselves
that we often overlook the needs of others.
We cling to destructive habits and hold onto long-time grudges.
Remind us of the promises you make in baptism
so that we may rise to new life
and live together in peace.

Anthem Carol of the Baptism George Brandon
Westminster Choir
"I come," the great Redeemer cries, "Thus it becomes us to fulfill
"To do thy will, O Lord!" All righteousness," he said,
At Jordan's flood, behold! he seals Then, faithful to the Lord's commands,
The sure prophetic word. Through Jordan's stream was led.
Hark, a glad voice! The Father speaks Jesus, the Savior, well-beloved!
From heav'n's exalted height: His name we will profess,
"This is my Son, my well-beloved, Like him, desirous to fulfill
In whom I do delight." God's will in righteousness.
No more we'll count ourselves our own
But his in bonds of love.
Oh, may such bonds forever draw
Our souls to things above.
Sermon “The Beloved” Greg Jones
*Hymn “Down by the Jordan” Lobe Den Herren
Down by the Jordan, a prophet named John was baptizing,
Preaching a message the people found bold and surprising:
“God will forgive! Show that you’ll change how you live!
Surely God’s new day is rising!”
There by the river, the crowd came with great expectation:
“Are you God’s Chosen One, sent here to rescue our nation?”
“No!” John replied: “He who is mightier than I
Judges and offers salvation.”
Jesus, you went to be baptized with all of the others,
Taking your place among sinners, God’s lost sons and daughters.
Then with great love, God’s Spirit came as a dove!
Your work began in those waters.
Here in the Church, we are baptized and filled with God’s Spirit.
Freed and forgiven, we’re welcomed with joy! Can you hear it?
This is God’s sign! This is how God says, “You’re mine!”
Let’s take the good news and share it!

Reaffirmation of the Baptismal Covenant
Opening Sentences
Reaffirming Our Commitment to Christ
Do you accept Jesus Christ as your authority in life, and the one who leads us to abundant life?
I do.
Will you strive to be Christ’s faithful disciple, obeying his word and showing his love, to your life’s end?
I will.
*Affirmation of Faith
We believe that in baptism
the Spirit demonstrates and confirms God’s promise
to include us, and our children, in the divine covenant,
cleansing us from sin, and giving us newness of life,
as participants in Christ’s death and resurrection.
Baptism sets us in the invisible community of Christ’s people
and joins us to all other believers by a powerful bond.
In baptism, we give ourselves up in faith and repentance to become the Lord’s.
Baptism is a reminder that God loves us long before we can love God.
For both God’s grace and our response to it
are not tied to the moment of baptism,
but continue and deepen throughout life. A Declaration of Faith
Reaffirming Our Commitment to the Church
Will you be a faithful member of this congregation, share in its worship and ministry through your prayers and gifts, your study and service, and so fulfill your calling to be a disciple of Jesus Christ?
I will.
Prayer of Thanksgiving
Remembering Our Baptism
Prayer
Holy God,
we praise you for calling us to be a servant people,
and for gathering us into the body of Christ.
Together, may we live in your Spirit,
and so love one another,
that we may have the mind of Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom we give honor and glory forever. Amen.

Offertory Anthem “King of Glory, King of Peace” Eric H. Thiman
King of glory, King of peace, Wherefore with my utmost art
I will love Thee; I will sing Thee,
And, that love may never cease, And the cream of all my heart
I will move Thee. I will bring Thee.
Thou hast granted my request, Though my sins against me cried,
Thou hast heard me; Thou didst clear me,
Thou didst note my working breast, And alone, when they replied,
Thou hast spared me. Thou didst hear me.
Seven whole days, not one in seven,
I will praise Thee;
In my heart, though not in heaven,
I can raise Thee.
Small it is, in this poor sort
To enrol Thee;
E'en eternity's too short
To extol Thee.

If someone in your family is serving in these wars, we ask that you let us know, so that we may include that person on our prayer list. (Contact Colleen Falasco: 302-654-5214 ext. 131, or cfalasco@.)

[pic] Our Mission Emphasis for January is “Sharing Our Plenty”
Despite the recent snowfalls and the bitterly cold weather, we are only beginning the winter season and there are many in our community who need food and clothing. Please take the opportunity to bring non-perishable food and your extra clothing to Westminster so that we can share our plenty with others. “There is no one so blessed that she/he has no needs. And you are never so empty or inadequate that you have no gift to give.” (Greg Jones, January 3, 2010)
Every Sunday in January is Food Sunday Because of the extreme weather and high unemployment, the food closets that we support, Hanover Presbyterian and St. Stephens Lutheran, need our help. We ask that you think of every Sunday in January as the day you will bring items to church to help fill this great need. When you are shopping for yourself, could you please pick up any of these items: cereal, rice, pasta, beans, canned milk, peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, tuna fish, vegetables, soups, drink mixes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, combs, diapers, paper towels. These items fly off the shelves at the food pantries! You will find collection boxes inside all doorways at church.
Clothing Drive - If you needed a reason to clean out closets and simplify, please gather up all your extra items and bring them to Westminster to help keep others warm and clothed. Greatly needed items are coats, sweaters, shoes, pants of all ages and sizes. Please give particular attention to cold weather clothes. Your donations will go to The Clothing Bank of Delaware. You will find collection boxes near the receptionist's desk and in Community Hall. The last day of the Clothing Drive is Sunday, January 31.
JOHABETO - Joining Hands For A Better Tomorrow Would you like to join with other volunteers and travel to Kitale, Kenya to dig a well, install a water tank, construct a kitchen, and build bathrooms and dorms for AIDS orphans? All skill levels are needed. There will be four mission trips this summer (June 28 - July 10, July 12 - July 24, July 26 - Aug 7 and Aug 9 - Aug 21). For more information, meet with Penny McFarland in Rodney Chapel following this morning’s second service.
Dining for Donations - We invite you to attend our first Dining for Donations dinner of 2010 tonight at 6:00 p.m. at Sue Bryde’s home. This will be our third year as a mission oriented women’s group blending fellowship and fundraising. Please bring an appetizer, salad or dessert and a $20 donation that will help fund a women’s oriented mission. Please call Peggy Carroll at 302-429-6650 or Liz Bacon at 302-658-8419 to reserve a spot and to confirm what dish you would like to bring.
Koinonia Circle is again extending a cordial invitation to all women and men to attend an interesting meeting on Tuesday, January 19, at 7:30 in the Meeting Room. Our special speakers will be Anne and Bob Deming who recently returned from a trip to India under a volunteer program through Cross-Cultural Solutions, similar to the Peace Corps. A tip they passed along, “If you happen to be in India for awhile and someone asks permission to kiss your feet, smile, place your hands on their head for a moment when they bow, and smile again when they stand back up.” We expect to learn a lot. Please join us.
Your Generosity for Christmas Boxes Food - Our congregation rose to the enormous challenge of filling to overflow 135 boxes of Christmas presents and food for families in great need. The extra food collected was given to Hanover Presbyterian Food Pantry and St. Stephens Food Closet whose shelves are constantly depleted, and they were most grateful.
Thanks to the generosity of Westminster members and friends, our 2009 Christmas Eve Offering totaled $22,662, a 28% increase over 2008. These funds will be distributed as follows:
• $5,666 to Family Promise, our newest outreach to homeless families in our Community;
• $11,331 to local Community Food Programs
• $5,665 to outreach programs in Congo and Guatemala.
