4th Grade Health/Science ProjectA System Advertisement: Body Systems Health Flap Book ProjectOverview: Our fourth graders have been learning about the proper nutrition and exercise for a healthy body in science class. For our Health unit this quarter we will dig deeper into the body to look at the major systems that keep the body functioning on a daily basis. Each small group of students will create an “advertisement” about their assigned body system. The flap-book poster will serve as an advertisement inviting observers to come and tour their system. The final project will be displayed in the hall to educate other students about the importance of proper nutrition and exercise for all of the body systems to function correctly.Preparation: A limited amount of time for research will be provided during science. I have already given students 2 long class work sessions using their textbooks and the computer/iPads. Students should continue researching their body systems at home nightly with parental guidance. I have talked to the students about proper use of Google. They do not want to enter a whole statement or question, rather just key words and phrases (i.e.: circulatory system; vitamins; kids. This will pull up the best list of resources dealing with the subject on their level of reading). A good amount of class time will be provided for students to work with their partners to catch up and share further research as well as time to assemble and create their finished projects. Poster board is needed so either students can chip in a couple cents each or one student can volunteer, with parent permission, to get the poster board. I have plenty of construction paper. Students will need to provide their own embellishments and materials if they want a more creative poster (ex: glitter, fabric, pipe cleaners, felt, materials such as Styrofoam to make models). Students will be informed in advance about the days they will be working in groups on the actual project so they can come prepared to class that day. (As of right now Monday November 24 is a definite work session but I may be able to give them at least one other large time block after the break.)Background Information: Your team of three or four at the Body Systems Dynamics Ad Agency has been hired as a travel consultant to design a luxury tour through the Human Body. Before you can collect your fee (payment) from the Anatomy Travel Bureau, you must produce a detailed advertisement. The owner of the travel bureau, Mrs. Sinclair Esophagus, has informed you that in order to win the contract you must highlight the important spots of your system, the exciting activities (how it works, what it does, and most importantly what type of exercise it needs to function properly), the dining options (what food sources, categories, vitamins, minerals, etcetera it requires to be healthy) and the imports and exports of the areas (what other systems it works very closely with). Each group will create one of the following advertisements: Digestive, Respiratory, Skeletal, Muscle, Nervous, Excretory, and Circulatory. What is a flap book poster? A large poster with numerous pop-ups, lift-the-flaps, and fold-outs. Each of these items presents a different category of information with additional, more detailed information inside the flaps, fold-outs, etc…For example, the “lift the flap” portion might showcase interesting and unusual facts, the fold out may showcase drawings of the organs. Pop-ups may advertise some of the organ labels or danger zones (such as the stomach and its digestive acids). You may use drawings, computer graphics, photographs of actual organs, student-created models, pictures from magazines, journals, or books to help in your advertisement of each system. Whenever possible, type all written parts of your labels and information. Let your imagination run WILD!Each group will orally present its advertisement to the class, and we will vote on which team gets the contract.(Side note: Ms. B was initially going to try to use technology but it is hard to get a device in each student’s hands so this is my creative solution. We have not had an interactive poster yet and they are my favorite)What should I include in my project? These will be the different categories found in your project. The following questions should be answered in your advertisement. The first question is the title of your system. Each of the subsequent questions should be presented in a separate category. What is the name of your body system? The name should be BIG and written clearly. It should stand out or attract attention to your advertisement. What does your body system do for our bodies? A description of what it does for your body should be clearly displayed. What main organs make up your body system? What do these organs do and how do they work together? What do they look like? Example: Display pictures of your organs and label them with a brief description of what they do for the system. *Remember, you may use computer graphics, pictures from magazines, or draw them yourself. You may use a variety of materials with different textures so that an observer may want to touch your advertisement. Be creative and attract your classmates! You are selling your system!Discuss at least one problem, such as a common disease, that may affect your body system. What would happen to your system if the disease took control of your system? Is there a cure for your system or a way it can be prevented? How can proper nutrition and exercise keep your system healthy? What other system does my system work very closely with? (ex: circulatory and respiratory)Where did I find all of my information? You need to include a bibliography (informal, just websites and titles of books). Don’t forget to mark your favorites and/or record where you found your information. ~ 4th Grade Body Systems Project~ Helpful Information~There are 7 systems of the human body that we will cover in this unit. This list is an overview of our body systems. The theme for TD this year is systems and we have studied the importance of keeping our bodies healthy with proper nutrition and exercise. This project is a great tool to review our objectives from this year as well as prior years. Students easily forget information when they are not exposed to it often after learning it. Body systems are an important science concept from kindergarten through eighth grade science, as well as biology in High School. A quick refresher/reminder of the systems:The Circulatory (Cardiovascular) System includes the heart, the blood, and the blood vessels. The Digestive System includes the mouth, esophagus, stomach, liver, gall bladder, pancreas, small intestine, and the large intestine. The Excretory System includes the liver, kidneys, ureters, urethra, and bladder. The Muscular System includes all of the muscles and tendons of the body. The Nervous System includes the brain, the spinal cord, and all of the nerves of the body. The Respiratory System includes the nose, the mouth, the trachea, the bronchial tubes, alveoli, and the lungs. The Skeletal System includes all of the bones of the body. Questions for you and your partner(s) to think about as you begin to conduct research on your body system. You may want to divide these between group members. What does my system do for our body? What system does my system work very closely with? What are some of the major organs that make up my body system? What is the job of each of these major organs? What does my system look like? Will I draw and label the organs, print graphics from the computer, cut pictures out of journals, or create a model and label? Are there any illnesses or conditions that can affect my system? (diabetes, heart disease, stomach ulcers, enlarged thyroid)How do individual nutritional habits affect my system? How does exercise affect my system? Does this system need (to have or to limit) specific vitamins, minerals, or types of foods (fats, protein, and carbohydrates)? What are some very interesting/amazing facts that I can include in my project? What materials will I use?How will my group members and I divide the work in our group? Will we make any models of organs to glue on our poster board? Remember, you are advertising your system. What will your slogan be?Where did I get my information?Helpful websites to get information: 1. (this is the one we looked at in class)~click on How the Body Works link and search body systems and search body systems down until you see information about the human body ~a fun game to play search your body system~video clips of how body systems worksonofcitationmachine ~make your own Bibliography ................
