H.R. No. 608

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, The Barbers Hill High School debate teams continued a tradition of excellence by winning the 1993 University Interscholastic League state 3-A Cross-Examination Debate contest recently at The University of Texas at Austin; and

WHEREAS, Under the accomplished direction of E. Harvey Craig, the teams performed with consummate skill as they competed against 57 teams from 32 districts around the state; through hard work and painstaking preparation, the cross-examination debate team achieved a great victory for the school and upheld the high standards of excellence that led Barbers Hill to state debate championships in 1989 and 1990; and

WHEREAS, Emily Stephens and Molly Stephens, members of one of three Barbers Hill teams advancing to this year's competition, demonstrated particular expertise by defeating teams from Eastland, Pleasant Grove, Vernon, Dimmitt, Glen Rose, Denver City, Montgomery, and Crane high schools; in addition to capturing the cross-examination debate title, they won individual honors, with Molly Stephens receiving the first debate speaker award and Emily Stephens receiving the second debate speaker award; and

WHEREAS, In addition to their most recent victory, the teams also achieved high rankings throughout the 1992-1993 school year in national tournaments at the Bronx School of Science of New York, The Saint Mark's School of Texas tournament, and a tournament at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Molly Stephens was named best speaker; and

WHEREAS, United in purpose and ambition, the Barbers Hill teams prepared extensively for the rigors of these difficult competitions and, through their efforts, have achieved remarkable results; all those who contributed to these outstanding performances this year are truly worthy of special legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas Legislature hereby commend the members of the Barbers Hill High School debate teams for their exemplary achievements during the 1992-1993 school year; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared for the members of the teams and for prominent display at Barbers Hill High School as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
