They spoke on prom and graduation safety, talking to the student journalists about the dangers of drinking and driving during these seasons of celebration. They also focused on social hosting laws. The 200 students who attended the news conference will write stories for the high school newspapers and magazines and produce video segments about the topic, spreading the important public service message to their peers.“These students are leaders in their schools and will one day become leaders in their communities,” Edmondson said. “They have a direct line to high school students across the state. We hope these aspiring journalists will take this message back to their peers, and that more young people will abstain from underage drinking.” Held each spring at the University of Oklahoma’s Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication, this event allows students to show their individual ability at writing feature stories, news stories, editorials and other media pieces; in taking photographs; and in designing pages for newspapers and yearbooks both in prepared-in-advance entries and on-site, timed competitions. The event also recognizes collective excellence in school newspapers and magazines. The James F. Paschal Sweepstakes Award for the best high school newspaper in the state went in a tie to The Tiger Tribune of Norman High School and The North Star of Putnam City North High School in Division I. The Fourth Estate of Bartlesville High School took Sweepstakes in Division II, and the MHS Express of Marlow High School won Division III. Broken Barriers, a magazine published by the students of Edmond Memorial High School, earned the Sweepstakes Award for magazine.Fifteen high schools and one junior high school contended for the Sweepstakes award after judges gave them Highest Honors ratings and All-Oklahoman recognition. In addition to the five Sweepstakes winners, the high schools so honored were Edmond Memorial, Edmond North, Edmond Santa Fe and Yukon in Division I; Bishop Kelley Catholic and Duncan in Division II; Bishop McGuinness Catholic and Clinton in Division III; Westmoore and Broken Arrow Senior in magazine; and Owasso 7th Grade Center in junior high newspaper. The newspapers of seven other Oklahoma schools received ratings of Distinguished Merit and Honors.Instructional sessions covered issues from freedom of the press to careers in the mass media and skills from publication redesign to writing better stories, headlines and cutlines. Presenters included John Clanton, Jesse Olivarez, Amy Raymond and James S. Tyree of The Oklahoman; Rita Geiger of FOI Oklahoma; Adam Martin of Verathon Medical; Ahsley Ruhl of OPUBCO Communications Group; Joey Senat of Oklahoma State University’s School of Journalism and Broadcasting; David Stout of T30 Telemundo; Mauro Yanez of Sooner Catholic; and Jennifer Wycoff of and Pigskin Preview Magazine. Faculty, staff and graduate students from the Gaylord College presented a variety of sessions and judged the contest entries.“This was our most exciting Spring Media Monday to date,” said OSM Executive Director Kathryn Jenson White, assistant professor of journalism in the Gaylord College. “Norman High won the Sweepstakes Award for the first time ever and Putnam City North and Bartlesville won for the first time in several years. The students were excited and proud. It was great to hear them cheer. They and their advisers have done amazing jobs with making scholastic newspapers that we can all be proud of.”Note: Below is a list of all awards won by Oklahoma high schools and junior high/middle schools.
