Educational Programs

The Advanced Practice Nurses from The Women's Heart Center offer educational presentations to increase women's awareness of their risk factors for heart disease and stroke, provide strategies to reduce risk, describe the signs of a heart attack and stroke and explain the variety of diagnostic and treatment options available. Educational programs are available to women's clubs and organizations, corporate and business groups, faith-based, educational and community organizations. The Women's Heart Center at St. Joseph's offers women of all ages a coordinated approach to promoting their heart health and reducing their risk for heart disease and stroke. SERVICES PROVIDED AT THE WOMEN'S HEART CENTER The Women's Heart Center offers advanced diagnostic and treatment resources for all women who realize that while

heart disease is their number one health risk, they can also minimize this risk through early identification and treatment. The Women's Heart Center advanced practice nurse provides a 45-minute comprehensive screening that evaluates a woman's risk factors for heart disease and stroke and includes the following: ? A Complete Medical History ? A Complete Family History ? Physical Exam ? Blood Pressure Testing ? Cholesterol and Blood Sugar Testing ? Waist, Hip, Neck Measurements, Waist to Hip Ratio, Weight, Body Mass Index and Body Fat Analysis ? Ankle Brachial Index SCREENING RESULTS Following the screening, the advanced practice nurse discusses the physical examination and test results. Each woman will be given an individualized treatment plan that may include recommendations for additional cardiac testing.

THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE EATING Better food habits can help you reduce your risk for heart attack. A healthful eating plan means choosing the right foods to eat and preparing foods in a healthy way.

BE A GOOD LOSER Excess weight increases your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. To achieve steady weight loss, eat fewer calories each day and exercise at least 30 minutes 5 days a week or more and you'll get closer to your goal.

HAVE A YEARLY CARDIOVASCULAR SCREENING Each year schedule an annual check-up. Have your blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels checked. Know your numbers!

EXERCISE! Swimming, cycling, jogging, skiing, dancing, walking and dozens of other activities can help your heart. Whether it is included in a structured exercise program or just part of your daily routine, all physical activity adds up to a healthier heart.
