OFFICIAL SHOW BLURB
The Tony Award winning musical comedy GUYS AND DOLLS is a sure bet that soars with the spirit of Broadway! Set in vivid, mid-20th Century New York City and buoyed by a Frank Loesser score that is among the most immortal works in theater history, this American classic has been called “the perfect musical comedy.” Featuring an eclectic ensemble of high-rolling gamble “guys,” well-meaning missionary “dolls” and brassy-voiced showgirls, GUYS AND DOLLS is a toe-tappingly fun and romantic fable about gambling men and the strong-willed women who love them.
TALKING POINTS
- The story follows three small-time gamblers and their attempts to run an illegal floating craps game. In order to secure a “safe” place for the game, Nathan Detroit places a bet with another gambler, Sky Masterson (who will bet on virtually anything) that he can’t take a “doll” of Nathan’s choice to dinner. Sky agrees, and Nathan chooses Sarah Brown, head of the Save-A-Soul Mission. As Sky attempts to win Sarah’s hand, Nathan finds himself in trouble with his own fiancée of 14 years, nightclub singer Miss Adelaide – all while still attempting to win big on the illegal games. Comedy, schemes and hijinx abound as the gamblers (“guys”) and their ladies (“dolls”) attempt to work things out.
- Includes several well known songs like “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat,” “Luck Be a Lady,” and “A Bushel and a Peck.”
- The original musical premiered on Broadway in 1950, with a West End premier in 1953. The show has had numerous revivals and tours and has become a popular choice for school and community theatre productions.
- The 1992 Broadway revival starred Nathan Lane, Peter Gallagher and Faith Prince
- Several other notable actors have held roles in various revivals of the show, including Ewan McGregor, Jane Krakowski, Douglas Hodge, Patrick Swayze, Don Johnson and Oliver Platt
- The 1955 film adaptation starred Marlon Brando as Sky, Frank Sinatra as Nathan Detroit, Jean Simmons as Sarah and Vivian Blaine as Adelaide.
Casting notes: Produced by Great Lakes Theater. Auditions will be held in the spring (TBD, likely February or March)
Awards and Special Notes: The original 1951 production was nominated for five Tony Awards – including Best Musical – and won all five. The recent revival was nominated for two 2009 Tony Awards (Best Revival of a Musical and Best Scenic Design).
