Word of the Month

By Kendra Long

The word of the month is teamwork. Teamwork is about working in a group of people or just working together to problem solve. Teamwork is very important because if somebody in your class or team doesn't understand something, then you can help him or her out . A great example of teamwork here at Aston is the Recycling Team where pairs of students work together as a team to collect all of our recycling. I play on a soccer and lacrosse team. My teams work together to try and win. We never give up and that's what you should do, as well.

You should try it sometime... TEAMWORK!

Reading Counts

By: Felicia Christaldi

Hey guys! This month I am here to talk about how you find books in our school library that are part of the Reading Counts program. If you are in the school library looking for a book, you should look at the spine. On the spine it tells you the points of the book and the Lexile level. You will see a color - like dark blue, green, red, purple, orange, or light blue. These all stand for grade levels. The grade levels are posted so you know that you are choosing the correct reading level. Happy Reading (

Blow, Throw, and Wash!

Nurse King reminds everyone to stop germs in their tracks by remembering to use a fresh tissue when you blow your nose. Throw the tissue out, and wash your hands with soap and water every time.

If you have to sneeze and there is no tissue, sneeze into your elbow!

Speaking of Recess… Here’s an idea

When you are playing out at recess, try to choose players with the same ability level as you. You will have more fun if you are evenly matched!

Hello Rockets, I’m Emily. Do you ever think about what you throw away? Do you recycle your plastic water bottles? Well, I do. Here are some fascinating facts about how much stuff we throw away. According to National Geographic Kids, as a baby you wore 3,796 diapers. Another fact is you will drink a very large number - 43,371 cans - of soda in your lifetime. Another fascinating fact is the sugar in soda is 10 sugar cubes. One of the most amazing facts is we throw away 694 plastic bottles in a second. Remember to recycle is best!

Thank you for reading this!

The Strange Thanksgiving

By: Emily Kauffeld

One breezy morning Mr. Brindle realized that he needed a turkey. It was three days until Thanksgiving. “Oh my,” he said to Mrs. Brindle, “We have to get a turkey, I’m worried we won’t be able to find one this close to Thanksgiving.” Mrs. Brindle told him not to worry; she said the Johnson’s farm had plenty of turkeys left. So off to the farm he went.

The Johnson’s farm was big. He had many turkeys. Mr. Brindle asked Farmer Johnson if he could pick his own turkey, and Farmer Johnson said sure. Mr. Brindle found a little turkey that he thought was plump and would be perfect for Mrs. Brindle and him. He paid Farmer Johnson and off he went back to his house.

On his way home Mr. Brindle realized that the turkey looked like his old uncle Jeff so he started to call the turkey Jeff. Jeff the turkey was very quiet, and that is what Mr. Brindle liked about him. When Mr. Brindle came home Mrs. Brindle said, “You are just in time for lunch. Did you get a turkey?” Mr. Brindle held up Jeff and Mrs. Brindle smiled.

Finally it was Thanksgiving. Mr. Brindle was getting ready when he heard Ding! Mr. Brindle answered the door, gave the guy at the door everything he needed, and shut the door. “The pizza is here!” Mr. Brindle shouted. There was Jeff sitting at his own chair with his gourmet dinner!

Science Experiment

By Tyler Milnes

Who says science isn’t fun? Try this experiment and you will end up with some gross, but neat alien monster eggs.

Ingredients: vinegar (white or cider), 1 or more whole raw eggs (wash hands after handling), clear jar/cup (big enough to hold an egg), green food dye, corn syrup

Other items: fridge

First, put the egg in a jar/cup and cover with vinegar. Then put them in the fridge overnight. For more fun, you can draw scary designs on the egg before putting them into the vinegar. In the morning take the egg out of the vinegar. Be sure to gently wash the egg and the jar with warm water (use soap on the jar, not the egg).

After the jar and egg have been washed, be sure to completely dry the jar. Put the egg back into the jar and cover with corn syrup. Then add some green food dye in the jar of corn syrup. Put the egg in the fridge for 24-hours.

When you take the egg out of the fridge, you will have a squishy, balloon, feeling plaything or fun Halloween decoration.

Those were the easy instructions for how to make Alien Monster Eggs. Always be sure to wash your hands before and after or wear gloves when handling raw eggs. Also always be sure to have adult supervision while doing science experiments.

Veterans Day

So, what is Veterans Day, and who are veterans? Veterans Day is a holiday that marks the end of World War I. Fighting in that war stopped on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first Armistice Day. Armistice means “truce”. In 1938, an act of Congress made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday—a day to be dedicated to world peace. It was to be called Armistice Day.

Although Armistice Day was originally to honor veterans of World War I, in 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, Congress amended the Act of 1938 and changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day. November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

People in other countries celebrate, too. In the United Kingdom, they call it Remembrance Day.

You can find out more about veterans by visiting the Veterans Museum in Media. It’s free, and they are open Sunday through Thursday from noon to 5:00. If you are in fourth grade, you can get a stamp for your passport by visiting.

Fall is Everywhere

By Rachel Jason

Leaves fall everywhere!

Red, yellow, orange, and brown!

Through the day, children will play.

We always have fun,

We will never be done,

We jump and bump and hear the leaves rustling (CRUNCH, CRUNCH!)

It’s windy and cold;

We’d better unfold

our jackets (BRR!)

All of us will dance and prance,

We will have a ball…

Because it’s fall!

Fall

When I think about fall, I think of Linvilla,

The taste of green Granny Smith apples -

Sweet and tart at the same time;

Hot apple cider with a cinnamon stick,

Leaves falling and changing color.

I think of bright orange pumpkins.

An icy chill is in the air,

and it is getting dark early.

Fall is here.

Congratulations to all who ran for Student Council. The officers for this school year are Joey Colasante as President, Kylie Moore as Vice President, Sydney Young as Treasurer, and Felicia Christaldi as Secretary. Each class has also voted on two class representatives, who are responsible for telling the class what is going on.

This month, the student council plans to do something for Veterans Day, have a Thanksgiving food drive, and make Mix it Up Day videos.

Voting

Make a note

you've got to vote

you have to make up a quote

It might be fun so

I've got to run

And now that I am done

I wait in the sun

And now the votes are in

They pin it and I win!

Recess Games

By Madison Fili

Hey! Do you like the recess games at Aston Elementary School? Here are a few recess games that students like to play on the playground: Ten, 3 on 3 football, four square, and Hello Mr. Fox. My personal favorite is four square. Recess is a time to unwind and enjoy time with your friends outside of the classroom. Make the best of your recess time! Grab a few friends and play one of these exciting games.

Have you ever wished that you could leave a secret message for someone? Well then, today’s your lucky day. I am going to teach you how to make invisible ink. If you want to know how, read on! You just need a few simple things before you get started.

• Half of a lemon

• Cup of water

• A white piece of paper

• Spoon

• Bowl

• Q-tip

• Lamp or flashlight

When you make invisible ink, it is very exciting and you can act like a secret agent or make a secret diary. We had all of the ingredients except the lemons. We bought 3 lemons but we really only needed 1 for the experiment. It was a really fun experiment and really easy to do. It all starts with squeezing the lemon’s juice into a bowl and then adding a few drops of water. Then you mix the lemon and water together. Dip the Q- tip into the liquid and then write your secret message on the paper. Once the liquid is completely dry on the paper, it is invisible. So how do you reveal your secret message?? It’s easy. You just need to heat up the paper by holding it up to a light bulb or lamp (be sure to get your parent’s help). The heat from the light is what causes it to become visible. When the lemon juice is heated it turns brown because of oxidation. Oxidation occurs when a substance is combined with oxygen. Have fun being a secret agent! Oh - and if you were wondering what we did with the extra lemons, we made lemonade!
