ED 222 – Classroom ManagementProf. AndersonFor each of the following, explain the expectations you will have and the procedures you will teach your students for the following, when you have your own classroom.Explanation of your procedure & expectationsStudents entering the roomProcedure/Expectations: I will demonstrate how students should quietly enter the room in a single file line (This is to be done after specials, after lunch, after an assembly; anytime students are asked to go somewhere as a class). I will demonstrate how they should go directly to their seat, keeping their hands and feet to themselves. Students and I will practice together. I will have them line up outside the classroom and practice quietly walking in a single file line directly to their seat, keeping their hands and feet to themselves. Students will practice the same procedure a second time as I observe them.Morning Routine Expectations: When coming into the classroom in the morning, students will not walk in a single file line, as they will all be arriving at different times. Once they enter the classroom, they will be asked to complete a list of morning checks that will be posted near the door. They must turn in their homework in the appropriate tray(s), sharpen pencils, use the restroom, get a drink, and take care of their lunch tickets. Then they must work on their assigned bell work. Bell activity/Warm-upProcedure: I will greet students at the door and hand them a worksheet to complete for bell work. Depending on the grade level, this could be a color sheet, a vocabulary word search, a few math problems, or any kind of worksheet that pertains to what we are currently studying. Expectations: Students will take the assignment to their seats and begin working on it as soon as they finish their morning checks. Taking attendanceProcedure: First thing in the morning, I will call each student’s name. If they are present, I will ask them to say “here” or raise their hand. Expectations: During this time, other students must sit quietly and work on their bell work. Tardy studentsProcedure: Students who come in more than 10 minutes late will be marked tardy. Expectations: Students who are marked tardy more than 3 times per marking period will receive a detention on the third time (or consequence according to the school), unless special arrangements exist. Setting-up the roomProcedure: The room will be set up with desks in 3 or 4 rows or separated. With my experience, I find this to be the best classroom set up. When students are seated in groups, they have a tendency to talk and not pay attention during instruction time. Expectation: The expectation is that students will be respectful of one another’s desk and personal space. Missing bookProcedure: Students will practice taking their textbook home the first week of school. Students, who return their books, will be rewarded with a piece of candy the following day. Expectation: If students take their textbook home at night, they are expected to return it to school the following day. Starting the third week of school, students who do not return their books, will receive a missing assignment. 3 missing assignments will cause students to get a detention. Missing pencil/paperProcedure: Scrap and lined paper will be kept on a shelf and students can get it when needed, as long as I am not teaching when they get up. On my desk, there will be a small pail that I will fill with sharpened pencils. Students needing a pencil may borrow one from me, but they will need to give me something belonging to them in exchange. When they return my pencil, they will get their item back. Students are not allowed to take pencils off of my desk, unless I am sitting at my desk. Students cannot get out of their seats (unless for an emergency), while I am in front of the class teaching. Expectation: Students needing a piece of paper or a pencil will wait for me to finish talking, before getting out of their seats to get what is needed. Getting students’ attention (signaling)Procedure: When the bell rings, I will model for students to stop, look, and listen. We will practice this procedure together a few times. Then I will have students demonstrate it and I will observe them. Expectations: When the bell rings, students will stop, look and listen. Students asking questions/making commentsProcedure: I will model how students are to raise their hand and I will call on them to ask a question or make a comment. Then I will have a student in the class demonstrate by raising their hand and asking a question. Expectations: Students must always raise their hand before asking a question or making a comment during class. Questions and comments may be limited depending on what is being taught. Students needing extra help can speak with me after class or during break time. Student needing to use the bathroom/lockerProcedure: Students needing to use the bathroom must ask permission to go and be given a bathroom pass from me. There will be one pass given for the girls’ bathroom and one pass given for the boys’ bathroom. This will allow for only 1 girl and 1 boy to use the bathroom at a time. The same goes for the hall. Students needing to go to their locker or to any other place in the building must ask permission to go and be given a hall pass from me. There will be two hall passes for the classroom. Expectations: Students must be respectful when using the bathroom. This means quietly walking to the bathroom, going to the bathroom, and washing their hands. Students must also quietly walk through the halls when going to any other room in the school. Student needing to throw paper awayProcedure: Students needing to throw paper away must wait until break time or independent work time. Students are not allowed to get out of their seats (unless for an emergency) while I am teaching in front of the classroom. Expectation: Students will wait for me to finish talking, before getting out of their seats to throw away papers. Student needing to sharpen pencilProcedure: In the first couple days of school, I will model the morning checks to students. One of the morning checks is to sharpen pencils. I will model how to use the electric pencil sharpeners and explain that it is done only in the morning or during break times. I will choose a few students to model how to sharpen their pencils and remind us when the appropriate times would be. Expectation: Students will be prepared for class by sharpening pencils in the morning. If their pencil breaks during class, they can borrow one of mine. However, they must give me something of theirs in return. Student needing a tissueProcedure: I will model how to get a tissue, how to use it, throw it away, and then remind students to use hand sanitizer located near the tissue box. I will have a few students practice and model for the class. Expectations: Students should not get out of their seats while I am in front of the room teaching. If there is an emergency, they can get out of their seats to get a tissue, but it is discouraged. Passing notesProcedure/Expectation: Note passing will not be tolerated! Students who are caught passing notes will receive a punishment. Food/water in the classroomProcedure: I will model how students must quietly go to their lockers to get snacks. Students must be sitting quietly at their desks and will be dismissed by row to get their snacks. We will practice this procedure as needed.Expectation: Students will only be allowed to bring food and water into the classroom during break time or special occasions (holiday parties, student’s birthday, etc.) Unless students have a medical reason, they will not be allowed to eat or drink at any other time. Gum/CandyProcedure/Expectation: Gum and candy will only be allowed if given as a reward, during a holiday party, or for some other special occasion as okayed by me. Electronic devices in classProcedure: Students will be assigned a number. This is the number they will use with assignments. This will also be their assigned number for an electronic device. When getting an electronic device in the classroom, students will be dismissed by number to go to the appropriate cubby or bin to get the device. I will model how to walk over to the cubby, carefully take out the electronic device, and take it back to my seat. I will have students practice this as I observe. Expectation: Electronic devices will not be allowed in class, unless needed for a class activity such as a calculator for math, recording device for reading, laptop for typing, etc. If electronic devices such as laptops or I-pads are issued by the school, students will have to store them in an assigned cubby or bin when not in use. Students will only be allowed to use them when needed for an assignment. Books/magazines in classProcedure/Expectation: Books and magazines will be kept in the classroom library. Students can read after finishing assignments or during silent reading time. Students caught reading while I’m teaching or at any other inappropriate time, will receive a punishment. Paper HeadingsProcedure: Any work that is done out of a textbook (math problems, answers to chapter review questions, etc.) will use the following format. I will model this on the board, as students copy it down on their paper. In the upper right hand corner they will write their name and number, next line will be the lesson that the assignment is from, and the last line will be the questions that students must complete. Expectations: This will depend on the grade level. Upper elementary students (grades 3-5) should be introduced to this format when doing assignments. Students in the younger grades do not do many assignments out of textbooks. Most of their assignments are done in workbooks or done on worksheets. Use of pen/pencil/typingProcedure/Expectation: All assignments, tests, and quizzes will be done in pencil. Pen and typing can be used only when approved by me. Homework – when?Procedure/Expectation: Students will be given homework only on weeknights. Students will not have homework on the weekends. Homework – how much?Procedure: Students will be told to take home all necessary materials to complete their homework. Expectation: The amount of homework will depend on the grade level. Students in the lower elementary grades (K-2) will have homework (1 subject) at most 2 nights per week. Students in the upper elementary grades (3-5) will have homework (1-2 subjects) at most 4 nights per week. Turning in/Grading homeworkProcedure: Turning in homework will be part of the morning checks. After the first homework assignment of the school year, I will model how students will turn in their homework. After entering the room, students will take their homework out of their folders and place it in the tray in number order. I will have students model turning in homework as I observe. Expectation: After being assigned, students should have homework completed and returned to school the next day. Posting assignmentsProcedure: I will write homework assignments on the board as they are given. The board will be arranged to look like the student’s planner. I will model how to fill out the planner on the board and ask students to copy in their planners. After filling out their planners, I will come around and stamp student planners that are filled out accurately. Expectation: Students must fill out their planners at the end of each day. Incomplete workProcedure: Incomplete work will be marked wrong. Expectation: Students need to learn to be responsible by asking for help when needed and checking over their work when they finish. When work is incomplete, I assume that either they don’t know how to do it or they rushed through it without putting forth much effort. Passing out/up papersProcedure: Two students will be assigned as paper passers for a class job. They will be responsible for passing out all papers. I will demonstrate how students are to bring their papers up to the assignment tray and put them in number order. Then I will have students practice this as I observe. Expectation: Students will learn the appropriate way of passing out and turning in papers. Late workProcedure: Late work must be handed directly to me as soon as possible. Expectation: Late work will receive a 5 point deduction each day that it is late. Make-up work for absencesProcedure: I will make sure that students get the appropriate make up work, tests, and quizzes if they were absent. Expectation: Students will be allowed the number of days they were absent to make up their work. If it goes beyond the number of days they were absent, they will receive a 5 point deduction each day that it is late. Correspondence with parentsProcedure: I will keep a list of parent’s phone numbers, home addresses, and email addresses in my desk at all times. If needed, I will have access to them. Expectation: If there is a problem, I will be sure to address it right away with a call home to the parents. CheatingProcedure/Expectation: Cheating on tests will not be tolerated! Any student caught cheating (copying someone else’s work, talking during a test, looking at their notes, etc.) will receive a punishment and get a 0% on their test. Procedures for partner workProcedure: The assignment will be explained to the whole group. Then I will talk about appropriate behavior when working with others and assign partners. Once any questions have been answered, the assignment has been explained, and all students have a partner, they can begin working. Expectation: All partners will be assigned. Each partner must contribute to the activity. If one partner is not doing their part, it is the responsibility of the other partner to let me know. Procedures for group workProcedure: The assignment will be explained to the whole group. Then I will talk about appropriate behavior when working in a group and assign each person a role (recorder, reporter, material gatherer, writer, etc.) within the group. Once any questions have been answered, the assignment has been explained, and all students have a group, they can begin working.Expectation: All groups will be assigned. Each group member will have an assigned role, which will be decided upon by the group members. If one person in the group is not doing their part, it is the responsibility of the other group members to let me know. End of class procedures/dismissal Procedure/Expectation: I will model how students should fill out their planners, explain and model classroom jobs, show them how to gather any needed materials for homework, and show them how to clean up their desk area. Students will practice filling out their planners, carrying out their jobs, gathering needed materials, and cleaning up their desk area as I observe. End of Day Routine: The end of the day routine will also be posted near the door. It will remind students to fill out their planner, complete their classroom jobs, gather needed materials for homework, clean up their desk area and any other scraps on the floor, walk to lockers to pack up when dismissed. ................
