About AABE 4

Important Announcement

All AABE/FL Members with birthdays, wedding anniversaries or graduations during the months of August – October should contact the editor so your information can be shared with the membership. You are somebody!!!!

On October 24, 2007, our Chapter held its annual BEAM event at Oak Ridge Elementary School in Tallahassee, Florida. BEAM is an acronym that represents Black Energy Awareness Month.

The event included an introduction to the basic principles of electric generation and transmission to 3rd grade students. Students had an opportunity to see how electricity works with some hands-on AABE materials. The students were extremely inquisitive and demonstrated a genuine interest about the basic engineering principles of electric generation. Hopefully, the seeds planted at this event will germinate into future energy professionals and AABE members in Florida and across the United States.

Here’s what’s happening and

coming up for the chapter. On December 6-7, we are returning to the beautiful Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando for the annual General Membership Meeting and the 3rd Annual Golf Scholarship Classic. The theme for this year is Power to Empower. The program will include a speaker from the governor’s Energy Commission and Harris Rosen will be on hand to welcome us and share some words of encouragement and inspiration. Also, a panel of utility subject-matter experts will lead a discussion on Renewable Energy and Conservation programs.  In addition, there will be a professional development seminar on workforce diversity.

For all you golfers and want to be golfers you are invited to come out to have fun for a very worthy cause. Our goal is to field 120 players and secure enough sponsors and players to raise $10,000 for the chapter’s scholarship fund. Moreover, we could use your help to have more sponsors and players. Please contact Malcolm Barnes and let him know you want to help.

There are a limited number of rooms in the hotel block. To receive the preferred rates, make your reservation as soon as possible.

The chapter’s leadership team has expanded to include several new officers on the Executive Committee. Welcome to Walette Stanford (JEA) as Treasurer; Yolanda Cornell (FPL) as South Area Coordinator; Claude Pinder (GRU) as the NE Area Coordinator. In addition, Laurie Dunston will lead the reconstituted Membership Committee and Milo Grant (JEA) is the chapter’s webmaster. Also, a big thank you to Bill Dickens (FPSC) for leading the chapter’s BEAM activities in Tallahassee.

“Advancing the Understanding of Energy...from local to global” is the theme for the 2008 national conference. The conference dates are April 15-18, in Houston, TX.

Because this issue is the final one until after the holidays, I’ll take this opportunity to wish you all good health, prosperity, and a peaceful holiday season.

I’m looking forward to seeing you in Orlando.

Peace,

Gregory

While a diamond may be a girl’s best friend, it is beyond debate that water is a community’s soul-mate. Water is used not only for household needs (drinking, bathing, waste disposal, gardening, recreational, etc.) but commercial needs as well. Electric power plants require vast quantities of water in order to generate electricity to meet our growing energy needs. Currently, drought conditions are adversely impacting North-west Georgia. Lake Lanier in Georgia is approximately 19 inches below the desired water level necessary to support the economic and population growth of Atlanta and the surrounding areas. Lake Lanier is one of 443 lakes in the US operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Lake Okeechobee in Florida is also experiencing below-level rainfall thus causing the lake to be at similar risk.

Water shortages imply that the scarce commodity (water) will be rationed differently resulting in delayed distribution channels and higher prices for water and energy. Conservation of water is no longer an option but a mandate if we desire to maintain current lifestyles. Florida’s economic growth depend on access to key natural resources. It’s important to understand how the Water Management District works in the region of Florida where you live. Profligate current consumption of water will assure a decline in economic well-being in future years. In short, we can not afford to be wasteful or ignorant about water allocation methods.

McHenry & Yolanda Cornell – Mr. & Mrs. AABE/FL

AABE/FL is proud to showcase one of our dynamic duos – The Cornell Family. Teamwork is not only a virtue in the corporate world but in family relations as well. The Cornell’s epitomize the concept of teamwork.

McHenry and Yolanda have been in the Nuclear and Utility industry for over 30 years and 25 years respectfully. They have been strong supporters of AABE for many years. McHenry is currently Director of Nuclear Fleet Standardization for Florida Power & Light. He first joined AABE in 1996 with the Louisiana Chapter while working for Entergy.

He continued that relationship with AABE when he left Louisiana and began work for Consumers Energy and joined the Michigan Chapter of AABE and was elected to the Board of Directors for the region. McHenry is now affiliated with the Florida Chapter of AABE.

Yolanda is currently Manager for Human Resources for Florida Power & Light. She first joined AABE in 1994 with the Arkansas Chapter while working for Entergy and later transferred to the Louisiana Chapter. Like McHenry – Yolanda continued her affiliation with AABE with the Michigan Chapter while working at Consumers Energy and is now a member of the Florida Chapter.

Both McHenry and Yolanda enjoy being a part of this organization because of AABE’s mission of ensuring input of African Americans and other minorities into the discussion and development of energy policies and regulations, R& D technologies and environmental issues. They have met some wonderful people through networking in this AABE.

Our chapter is enriched because of their professional experiences and the enthusiasm they both bring in promoting minority energy awareness.

“Coal: Neither pulverization, IGCC wins out” in MIT study

A draft version of a study by Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers will conclude that neither of two technologies vying to become the industry standard for new coal-fired power plants can claim to be the cleanest or easiest method of capturing carbon dioxide emissions. The study, scheduled for release soon, says that so much engineering work remains to be done on integrated gasification combined cycle technology that it is unclear whether it is preferable to the utilities' championed method, which is pulverized coal.” Greenwire, February 21, 2007, .

“ENERGY MARKETS: DOE official urges greater interstate cooperation in grid planning.” State regulators should look beyond "parochial interests" and consider interstate options when they consider new transmission grid projects, a top Energy Department official said today. "”The parochial interests that shaped electricity policy and grid expansion in the 20th century no longer work,’" Deputy Energy Secretary Clay Sell told a Washington forum sponsored by DOE and the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners…. The electricity industry and state regulators are awaiting a proposed "national interest transmission corridor," where the federal government could order grid additions to ease line congestion that could lead to service interruption.” Greenwire, February 21, 2007, .
