CLOSING WORDS FOR CHRISTIANS

INTRODUCTION: The Christians at the middle of the first century, were close to their

faith's beginnings, but far enough removed and like us, they were looking back to the

time of completed redemption which Christ purchased on the cross about 32 A.D.

So now their faith was to move on and allow the new life of Christ in them and to be

lived out in their remaining days of life on the earth. Although we are twenty centuries

removed from them, the closing words of exhortation still apply to us. Let's look at

them as we finish the Book of Hebrews.

I. A WORD OF CONSECRATION ? (vv.15-16) II. A WORD OF CAPITULATION ? (v.17) III. A WORD OF EXHORTATION - (vv.18-19) IV. A WORD OF BENEDICTION ? (vv.20-21) V. A WORD OF SUPPLICATION ? (v.22) VI. A WORD OF INSPIRATION - (v.23) VII. A WORD OF SALVATION - (vv.24-25)

CONCLUSION: As the book of Hebrews comes to a close, the writer wanted most of all to instill in the early church that they persevere in the faith. This was in spite of the circumstances and consequences of faithful living for Christ. The world of these believers was shaking under their feet, as anger and hatred towards Christians was building all around. Believers nevertheless, could stand firm on the solid rock of Christ and His Word. Moreover, knowing Jesus as the Lord God of the universe and giver and sustainer of life eternal, it would be sufficient to carry them on and safely through it all and one day upwards to the glorious city of God. That is the same faith, works and hope God wants in us as we look toward the same glorious promises of our future.

BIBLE TEXT FOR MESSAGE The New International Version 2011

Hebrews 13:15-25(NIV) Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise--the fruit of lips that openly profess his name. 16 And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. 17 Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you. 18 Pray for us. We are sure that we have a clear conscience and desire to live honorably in every way. 19 I particularly urge you to pray so that I may be restored to you soon. 20 Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, 21 equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. 22 Brothers and sisters, I urge you to bear with my word of exhortation, for in fact I have written to you quite briefly. 23 I want you to know that our brother Timothy has been released. If he arrives soon, I will come with him to see you. 24 Greet all your leaders and all the Lord's people. Those from Italy send you their greetings. 25 Grace be with you all.
