CN Cargo Control Number

now available in EDI 322

Shipment Status Messages

A new capability has been added to our EDI

322 Shipment Status Message.

Ocean Carriers may now electronically

receive the CN Cargo Control Number (CCN)

for shipments we transport on a CN bond in

Canada.

CN implemented this program

enhancement at the request of ocean

carriers to further expand electronic

business practices.

Typically, these shipments originate in the

U.S. and CN transports the containers to a

Canadian ocean port for export overseas.

For example, containers CN transports from

U.S. intermodal terminals through Canada

to the ports of Vancouver, Montreal and

Halifax.

CCN per container shipment

CN generates a manifest for each container shipment with a

unique CCN based on the container initial, number and

current date, and transmits the manifest to Canada Border

Services Agency (CBSA). Until now, when the containers were

exported on the vessel, ocean carriers had to print each

manifest from Intermodal Direct and provide them to CBSA

with the outbound vessel report.

Now, ocean carriers may electronically receive the CCN in the

CN EDI 322 Shipment Status Message and electronically

provide them to CBSA. Intermodal Direct will continue to

provide printed manifests should any be required.

Here is an explanation of the EDI and CCN formats:
