Adult Education entrance is Door "G" on the Northwest side of the building in the back. Door "G" faces Franklin Street at the corner of Franklin and Cerro Gordo.

DPS #61 Adult Education Department provides a pathway for adult learners to complete their educational and career goals. The Department is funded by grants through the Illinois Community College Board Adult Education & Family Literacy, Workforce Investment Solutions, Secretary of State as well as others. Decatur School District #61 is the administrative and fiscal agent for the Adult Education Department.

The goal is for each student to leave with an employment portfolio and transition to employment and or post-secondary education.

Courses include:

GED is offered to those who read at a ninth grade reading level and above. The course is designed to prepare adult learners for the GED exam. The GED test is comprised of Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science. The class is free, however each component of the GED is $30.00. Students will take a practice test to ensure they are ready to pass each portion of the exam.

English as a Second Language is designed to include instruction in English for those whose native language is not English. Curriculum in listening, speaking, reading, and writing using the English language is used. Also included are instruction in life skills, citizenship education, career exploration, workplace literacy and family literacy. Classes are held at Pershing Early Learning Center and Johns Hill Magnet Schools.

Evidence Based Reading Instruction (EBRI), Adult Basic Education (ABE) is for those who are reading below a ninth grade level. Students get instruction in basic reading skills. Once their levels are raised they will move to the GED class or one of the bridge classes according to their career interests.

Bridge Courses offer contextualized curriculum for each industry sector (Healthcare, Manufacturing/Construction & Hospitality) and an unpaid work experience.

Introduction to Hospitality/Culinary Arts course combines basic reading and math literacy instruction as well as GED instruction with job preparation skills in the hospitality industry. Classes are enhanced by providing the opportunity for hands-on and on-site learning at partnering hotel, food service and retail operations. Participants will have the opportunity to transition into a hospitality related, advanced educational program or apply for entry-level jobs while working

toward a GED. Adults with a GED or high school diploma wishing to improve their skills are welcome.

Introduction to Manufacturing and Construction is designed to prepare students for entry level positions, with an emphasis on math skills, but will also include reading skills. This course is for those with or without a high school diploma who read below the 9th grade reading level. Students will be engaged in what employers in the manufacturing and construction fields are needing and will enter into a job-shadowing experience during the last week of class.

Introduction to Healthcare is designed for those who do not read at a tenth grade level, and/or who want to obtain their GED and are interested in the Healthcare field. Career exploration, math, reading and test taking/study skills are incorporated. It provides a pathway for students to enter the Certified Nursing Assistant course, and prepares them for entry-level employment at local nursing homes, hospitals and doctors' offices and prepares them for the GED exam. Students will finish the class with three certificates: Basic Life Support CPR, Personal Care Assistant Training and Introduction to Healthcare completion.

Certified Nursing Assistant is an eight-week course approved by the Illinois Dept. of Public Health (IDPH). Instruction in basic nursing skills (theory, laboratory, clinical) is provided. Students are eligible to take the Illinois State Competency Evaluation exam upon successful completion of the course. Those who pass the exam are placed on the IDPH Health Care Worker Registry and are able to work as a CNA. A pathway is provided to those wanting to attend an LPN/RN program within the community

All Courses Incorporate: Computer instruction, career exploration, interview and resume development, how to keep a job, attitude, study skills, test taking strategies, and what social services are available. Schedule of classes is listed on the website at adulted.

Workforce Investment Opportunity Act Transitions Coordinator is a case manager available for OUT OF SCHOOL youth ages 17-24 that need assistance in gaining workplace skills, and/or earning a GED. Potential clients will complete an application. Once completed, the local Workforce Investment Solutions office will review. If approved, the student will receive assistance with obtaining a paid job internship experience with the goal for the student to gain employment while working on their educational goals.

For the purpose of compliance with Section 511 of Public Law 101-166 (the Stevens Amendment), approximately 30% federal funds are used in support of this program.
