Current industry readings, videos, assignments and projects will be utilized to demonstrate how companies can successfully market through social media. The course will prepare students for a career in social media marketing by educating them on the most current information and tools. Students will get hands-on experience creating and managing social media marketing content for a real client. A certification program is included as part of the course requirements.Credit awarded: 3 credit hoursPrerequisite: MKTG 452: Social Media MarketingCourse Objectives and Student Learning OutcomesCourse Objectives: The primary objectives of this course are to provide relevant and timely content about real-world social media marketing, give students hands-on experience with social media marketing and incorporate an industry recognized certification program.Student Learning Outcomes: At the completion of this course, the student should be able to: Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of current social media marketing practicesAnalyze a company’s social media marketing effortsCreate and implement a social media strategy for a clientMaster the social media certification programMeet the following experiential learning outcomes:SLO 1.1. Students will demonstrate the knowledge and skills obtained through participation in experiential learning activities that are relevant/pertinent to their academic programs and/or career goals.SLO 2.1. Students will demonstrate a high level of comprehension and skill in connecting theory with practice which is correlated to their level of participation in Experiential Learning activities.Course Readings and Technological SupportRequired Materials: Access to Hootsuite University (90 day free version); access to an internet-enable device to utilize various social media platforms. Instructional ActivitiesThis class has been designed to provide an active learning experience by using an industry recognized social media certification program. Students will access current industry readings, videos, assignments and projects via the Hootsuite University program. Hands-on experience creating and implementing social media content for a real client will also be included in the course. The following grading scale applies:A = 900-1000 B+ = 875-899B = 800-874C+ = 775-799C = 700-774D+ = 675-699D = 600-674F = 599 or belowIntroduction BoardIntroduce yourself on the introduction board on Moodle. Tell us your name, hometown, major, career plans, thoughts on social media and an interesting fact about yourself. Do this the first week of class. This assignment is worth 30 points.Hootsuite Workbooks and AssignmentsSeveral of the weekly Hootsuite topics include a workbook that is assigned. Download the workbook and fill it out as it pertains to our client. There are assignments some weeks when workbooks are not included in the Hootsuite topic. Each workbook/assignment is worth 30 points each for a total of 270 points. Hootsuite ExamsSeveral of the weekly Hootsuite sections include an exam. The system allows you to redo attempts until you get all of the questions correct, but only your first attempt score will count towards your class grade. All of your Hootsuite first attempt exam scores will be averaged to get a score out of 100. This score will be multiplied by 3 for a total possible score of 300 points on the Hootsuite exams. Social Media CertificationAfter completing the Hootsuite courseware, you will take the certification exam. Your score on the first attempt of the exam will be counted toward your final grade. Team ProjectYou will work in teams to create and implement a social media marketing strategy for a real client. Sections of the project include social media audit and benchmarking; social media target market and objectives; social media strategy and editorial calendar; weekly posting reports; and reflection. There are guidelines and supporting documents posted in the team project folder on Moodle. Each of the major sections has a separate due date throughout the semester. The final plan comprised of all five sections is due on May 1, 2016. Every section is worth 60 points for a total of 300 points.Policies and ProceduresInstructor’s Expectations for Students – Students will commit to the timely completion of all work assignments. Students will act professionally in all interactions with their student peers and instructors. Since this is a distance learning course, students are expected to abide by professional netiquette guidelines. This means that all communications should be professional in nature. Students should be considerate of their online classmates through all forms of communication just as they would be in a face-to-face class. Students will abide by the Coastal Carolina University Statement of Community Expectations presented above.What Students Can Expect From the Instructor – Instructor will commit to the timely response to all student inquiries. Instructor will commit to facilitate student learning of the subject matter. Instructor will provide feedback and grades on assignments in a timely manner; usually one week or less.
