Last time students were in my room they were in for study hall. Where they worked on homework for other classes. When they needed help I would help them to understand the concept they need. For this lesson they are coming in for a review activity for math and for computers. They will be in for 8th hour which is during computers where they are working on coding in a minecraft setting which this lesson will be based off of. Plus it will be based off of other math concepts they need some review and practice on. Students may need reminders to work together and take others input into consideration. Some students tend to get frustrated to the point of quitting so try to monitor that in this lesson and remind them that it is okay to be stuck you just have to keep pushing through. Lesson Goal(s) / Standards:MP1:Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.MP4: Model with Mathematics.G.MG.1: Use geometric shapes, their measures, and their properties to describe objects. Lesson Objectives:After the breakout, students will be able to explain how they solved and persevered through each challenge with 100% accuracy. During the breakout, students will use area and perimeter to figure out the size of Steve’s head with 100% accuracy. Materials Needed:Have everything set up before they are in the room.On table- Periodic table and elements and book. Taped under the table- red rock with invisible ink saying “find a second one of me and see what else you find and key to key lock.On the walls- Arrows pointing in the directions up, left, left, up, right label with invisible ink with roman numerals labeling 1-4 so they know what order they go in. The other two students are asked if they would like to participate in the activity they can or they can work on their homework. The 4 eighth graders can at times become overwhelmed if they get stuck so they may need help or be able to use hint cards. A. The Lesson1.Introduction (include time allotment)getting attentionPlay introduction video I made. Youtube linkrelating to past experience and/or knowledge, creating a need to know, sharing objective, in general termsThis activity you will be you will be working in two groups as a team to break into these boxes. I have pre chosen your groups you will be working in. You will be using academic skills you already know to help solve these challenges. Remember to think outside of the box at all times. Make sure you take a look around the room you never know what will be a clue. 2.Content Delivery (include time allotment & instructional methodologies)This lesson is all about them working together and trying to solve academic related challenges on their own. I will be staying back and letting them work on these. But I will be immersing myself and listening to their strategies and conversations they are having. You will have 30 minutes to complete the challenge of breaking into the boxes. There will be a timer up on the board for you to see how much time is left. Make sure you are not in sloth mode. Which means sitting back and letting everyone else do the work! Everyone has their own strengths so use them! Everybody has good input so listen to them and always take it into consideration. Everyone should be working together. You want to make sure you are not talking too loud so the other group doesn’t hear what you have figured out! There is no hitting the boxes or just trying to break them open. You have to figure out the combination to get into the box. Every box has one lock except for the main box which will have 3 locks on it. You may use your resources but you may not use your computer that needs to stay in your bag. You will have two hint cards for each group. If you need a hint from me you can bring your hint card up to me and I will give you a hint on the challenge you are working on. Once you have used your hint cards you will not get any more hints. Remember to work together! Here are your groups: Kaden, Jared, Kelby- On North sideNate, Logan, Dawson- On south sideWhen the timer starts you can pick up the sheets on the table and begin your first challenge play the minecraft music in the background. will be walking around and monitoring the groups and making sure they are all working together to solve the challenges and taking everyone's input into consideration. Also giving them little hints when they need them. The first challenge they should be working on solving is the periodic table with the elements. For this challenge they have to match the elements to the table and see the number to each one and add those up to get the first combination of 1-4-3 which will open the small box.. They may use a calculator if they need to. Inside that box they will find a flashlight and a red rock. With the flashlight they will use it to see invisible ink on the red rock paper and on the axes hung on the walls. On the red rock it will say look for a second one of me and see what else you find. They will have to look around the room and find another rock with a key by it to unlock to key lock on the big box. With the axes on the wall they will be pointing in certain directions and they will use the invisible ink to see what order they go in. This combination will go with the directional lock on the medium sized box. Inside the medium sized box they will find a sheet with page numbers, line, and word and also the head of Steve and a Steve’s Story. With the page numbers, line, and word. They will have to look in the book on the table and find the page number, line, and word letter. Once they find all the letters they will spell the word STEEL which is the combination to the word lock on the big box. With Steve’s head and story. They will read the story and perimeter and area will be circled. They will then figure out that they need to find the perimeter and area of Steve’s head and add those together to get the combination 3-2-6-4 to unlock the last lock. Inside the big box will be prizes and a sheet that says We Broke Out! If one group is finished before the other. Have them as a group write/talk about how they solved each challenge. 3.Closure (include time allotment)Come together as a whole group. Talk about each challenge and have each group explain how they solved it/how they got to the combination. Maybe talk about where they got stuck and what they did to persevere through it. Relate it back to when they are working on coding and how sometimes you get stuck on some codes you just have to keep working to solve them. Also relate to their lives outside of school and how they need to persevere through everything they do. B. Assessments UsedInformalDiscussionObservationsC. Differentiated InstructionUsing the hint cards gives them some differentiation so they can get help where needed. Grouping the two older Juniors with the eighth graders will help so they can provide assistance when stuck on concepts. Provide more assistance where needed. D. ResourcesBreakoutedu. ................
