WORSHIP AT HOME FOR THE 15th SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY& INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER FOR PEACE, MONDAY 21ST SEPTEMBERBEATING SWORDS INTO PLOUGHSHARESBEATING SWORDS INTO PLOUGHSHARESCome, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord, you that by night stand in the house of the Lord. Lift up your hands towards the sanctuary and bless the Lord. The Lord who made heaven and earth give you blessing out of Zion.Glory to God, source of all being, Eternal Word and Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and shall be for ever. Amen. (Psalm 134)Jesus saw the city of Jerusalem and wept over it, because it was blind to God’s real presence in the world. Let us now acknowledge and reflect on our part in the blindness and self-centredness of the life of our world...Music - Spiegel im SpiegelAbsolution: God, the Father of mercies, has reconciled the world to himself through his Son, Jesus Christ. By the ministry of reconciliation entrusted to his Church, receive Christ’s pardon and peace to live in his strength alone, always. AmenCollect: Almighty God, to whose glory we celebrate the dedication of this house of prayer we praise you for the many blessings you have given to those who worship you here: and we pray that all who seek you in this place may find you, and, being filled with the Holy Spirit, may become a living temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. AmenHymn: Hills of the North rejoiceThe Reading: Matthew 21.12-16 - Jesus Cleanses the TempleThen Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who were selling and buying in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold doves. He said to them, ‘It is written, “My house shall be called a house of prayer”; but you are making it a den of robbers.’ The blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he cured them. But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the amazing things that he did, and heard the children crying out in the temple, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David’, they became angry and said to him, ‘Do you hear what these are saying?’ Jesus said to them, ‘Yes; have you never read, “Out of the mouths of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise for yourself”?’Reflection: In cleansing the temple building Jesus also symbolically cleanses the temple of all that gets in the way of God’s occupying the place that is rightfully God’s. In cleansing the temple building Jesus demonstrates the need of each of us to prepare the temple God yearns to reside in, our heart. The place where people came to be cured was the temple and it’s in the true temple of God - the human heart, that all healing really flows out from. The chief priests and the scribes were outraged when they saw and heard what was happening because the temple, supposedly the place where God lived, was theirs - they controlled entry, they controlled the worship, most of all of course they controlled the finances - so they were bound to be upset when this firebrand of a roving preacher came in with his radical ideas and his noisy followers, contaminating the sacredness of their turf and threatening their position of power and control. Jesus was showing the trappings of external religion for what they are, and pointing to the internal religion of the temple of the human heart. Now we know that God didn’t live in the temple any more than any other place. We know the real temple of God is the human heart because it is the grace of God living in the human heart from which emanate love and kindness and healing and justice and peace - the highest form of praise and worship that God looks for. Today we celebrate the feast day of St Laudus who healed a woman of blindness and to whom the church at Mabe is dedicated. Let us always seek spiritual sight and dedicate ourselves to the “inner religion” that brings healing and true peace.?“ ‘The Love Religion’ The inner space inside that we call the heart has become many different living scenes and stories. A pasture for sleek gazelles, a monastery for Christian monks, a temple with Shiva dancing, a kaaba for pilgrimage. The tablets of Moses are there, the Qur’an, the Vedas, the sutras, and the gospels. Love is the religion in me. Whichever way love’s camel goes, that way becomes my faith, the source of beauty, and a light of sacredness over everything.” (Barks, Coleman. A Year with Rumi) The Creed We believe in God the Father, God almighty, by whose plan earth and heaven sprang to being, all created things began. We believe in Christ the Saviour, Son of God in human frame, virgin-born, the child of Mary upon whom the Spirit came.Christ, who on the cross forsaken, like a lamb to slaughter led, suffered under Pontius Pilate, he descended to the dead. We believe in Jesus risen, heaven’s king to rule and reign, to the Father’s side ascended till as judge he comes again. We believe in God the Spirit; in one Church, below, above: saints of God in one communion, one in holiness and love. So by faith, our sins forgiven, Christ our Saviour, Lord and friend, we shall rise with him in glory to the life that knows no end.The Prayers.
