February 21, 2010

1st Sunday in Lent

Westminster Presbyterian Church extends an enthusiastic welcome, in Christ’s name,

to all who would worship here or join us in fellowship.

We affirm that there can be no exclusion within the body of Christ.

We invite all children of God to join us as disciples of Christ

and participate fully in the life of our congregation.

Welcome to Westminster

Whether you are worshiping at Westminster for the first time or returning for a visit,

we sincerely welcome you in the name of Christ!

← Following our 9:00 a.m. worship service, we invite you to meet today’s “ambassadors,” Fred and Julie Schmitt, at the back of the sanctuary. They will have a gift for you, and can share information regarding our many ministries for children, youth and adults. They can also guide you to the hospitality area to enjoy fellowship or lead you on a tour of the church.

← Children are welcome in worship! Westminster’s Kids’ Notes and worship bags are available each Sunday from the ushers. Kids’ Notes, a weekly companion to Westminster’s morning worship, emphasizes listening and seeing during worship. The bags include storybooks for children of all ages, coloring paper and crayons, a children’s bulletin for those age three to six, and bookmarks for hymns and Scripture.

← The Lord’s Supper is celebrated the first Sunday of the month at both services.

← Worship Aids – You may obtain large print Presbyterian Hymnals and hearing devices from any usher.

← Would you like to know more? Check out our website at .

ORDER OF WORSHIPAT 9:00 A.M.

Preparation for Worship

We turn to you, O God, as we seek through prayer to find meaning. Sometimes it is a fervent prayer in the midst of serious meditation, but more often it is a fleeting prayer on the run. We pray for wisdom when we ponder perplexities. We pray for courage when we face the unknown. Open our hearts and minds to your ever present Spirit. Amen.

Welcome and Announcements

*Passing of the Peace

Organ Prelude Andante in F Alfred Louis James Lefébure-Wely

Call to Worship

We seek not a superficial faith, but a deep faith in the Creator of the cosmos.

We come with a mixture of both faith and doubt,

and a yearning for more wisdom.

God wants us to ask questions, to be open to mystery and to seek the truth.

We come to experience God’s presence

and to discover God’s purpose for our lives.

*Hymn No. 288 “I Sing the Mighty Power of God” ellacombe

Call to Confession

The Lord is merciful and gracious,

slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

God does not deal with us according to our sins,

nor repay us according to our iniquities.

For as the heavens are high above the earth,

so great is God’s steadfast love toward those who fear him;

as far as the east is from the west,

so far does God remove our transgressions from us. Psalm 103

Prayer of Confession

Forgive us our blindness, O Lord.

We are in the presence of holiness,

but we fail to discern it.

We stand in the midst of your dynamic Spirit,

yet we do not perceive it.

We walk on the road of newness,

but we see only the dust and signs of the old.

Open our eyes to your activity in our world

and give us an awareness of your power and work.

Silent Prayer

Assurance of God’s Forgiveness

Anthem Prayer from Psalm 139 John Weaver

Westminster Choir

How precious are your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I should try to count them they are more in number than the sands: when I awake, I am still with you. Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts, see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Amen.

Sermon “The Pervasive Presence of God” Greg Jones

Offering

During the offering, please sign your name and pass the red folders down each row.

As folders are returned to the center aisle, note the names of fellow worshippers on your pew.

Ruth Bailis, mezzo-soprano

Whate’er can trouble

The peace, Lord, of a heart that’s thine?

In all it seeks Thy sovereign will eternal

And to thy law doth incline.

On the earth, in the skies above me

Can greater joy be known,

Than peace, which hearts alone

Do feel who love thee?

Ordination and Installation of Elders and Deacons

Opening Words

There are different gifts,

But it is the same Spirit who gives them.

There are different ways of serving God,

But it is the same Lord who is served.

God works through different people in different ways.

But it is the same God who inspires a faithful response.

Each one is given gifts by the Spirit, to use for the common good.

Together we are the body of Christ.

Presentation of Elders and Deacons

Constitutional Questions for Elders and Deacons

Constitutional Questions for the Congregation

Do we, the members of the church accept these people as elders and deacons, chosen by God through the voice of this congregation to lead us in the way of Jesus Christ?

We do.

Do we agree to encourage them, to respect their decisions, and to follow as they guide us, serving Jesus Christ, who alone is Head of the Church?

We do.

|Worship Notes |

The flowers in the Sanctuary today are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Anna Mae Robinson, Virginia Haycock and Harry Robinson from their family.

Sanctuary Flowers - Consider giving the sanctuary flowers for Sunday worship. Your gift of God’s natural beauty to remember or honor loved ones, or to celebrate an event, expresses praise and thanksgiving to God. Please contact Linda Watson during business hours at 302-571-6719 or lwatson@. Available dates for flowers are April 11 and 18.

Are you wearing a nametag? Whether you are a longtime member or new to the church, wearing a nametag provides others the opportunity to meet you, greet you by name, and for you to become more familiar with others at church. Nametags and markers are in baskets at all major entrances. Extend hospitality and friendship by wearing a nametag every Sunday.

“Westminster to Go” Audio tapes and DVD’s of recent Westminster worship services are available. Please use the sign-out sheet when you borrow them from the front desk. Printed sermons are available on the literature tables the following week and on our website at .

|Congregational Care and Prayer |

Please remember in your prayers:

❖ Those recently hospitalized: David Adelman.

❖ Westminster’s homebound family who can no longer attend worship with us. Send a card, say a prayer, visit! This week we ask you to remember Edie Lennox, Apt. 3969 and Grace Austin, Apt. 3613, both of Methodist Country House, 4830 Kennett Pike, Wilmington, DE 19807.

Westminster’s Covenant Prayer Group is committed to praying weekly for specific needs of the faith community. Anyone with prayer requests may leave a confidential message on 302-654-5848, ext. 335, or fill out a prayer request card (in the pew pocket) and place it in the offering plate.

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan often seem far away, and we may neglect to realize that Americans, as well as Iraqis, Afghans and members of coalition forces, continue to die each day. As Christians, we are called to pray for the spreading of peace and justice and an end to violence. If someone in your family is serving in these wars, please let us know, so that we may include that person on our prayer list. Contact Colleen Falasco: 302-654-5214 ext. 131, or cfalasco@.

This week we pray for

• Those known to the WPC Community presently serving in the Middle East:

Afghanistan: Edward Maloney, Chris Martin, Neal Moody and Daniel Reinsenberger

• The families of those from the U.S. who have died most recently. We were unable to access this information this week, therefore, those names will be listed in next week’s Bulletin.

• Those who have returned from service, possibly suffering from wounds or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, whose scars may by deep and long-lasting.

Anne Ledbetter will lead this group using the resource Understanding Your Grief, by Alan D. The next Girl Talk book discussion will be held at the home of Anne Ledbetter, Thursday, February 25th, at 7:00 p.m.  We will discuss Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, written by Pulitzer Prize-winning couple Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn.  A copy of the 2009 book is available in the church library, or ask Anne to borrow her audio book (unabridged CD version).    Whether you are able to attend this discussion or not, Anne strongly recommends that everyone read this book!   Please RSVP to  Anne if you plan to attend, anne@, or 302-654-5214, ext. 124.  Anne’s address is 202 Peirce Rd., Deerhurst, 19803.
