Sunday Worship Bulletin

January 17, 2010

2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Westminster Presbyterian Church extends an enthusiastic welcome, in Christ’s name,

to all who would worship here or join us in fellowship.

We affirm that there can be no exclusion within the body of Christ.

We invite all children of God to join us as disciples of Christ

and participate fully in the life of our congregation.

Welcome to Westminster

Whether you are worshiping at Westminster for the first time or returning for a visit,

we sincerely welcome you in the name of Christ!

← Following our 9:00 a.m. worship service, we invite you to meet today’s “ambassador,” Bill Nace, at the back of the sanctuary. He will have a gift for you, and can share information regarding our many ministries for children, youth and adults. He can also guide you to the hospitality area to enjoy fellowship or lead you on a tour of the church.

← Children are welcome in worship! Westminster’s Kids’ Notes and worship bags are available each Sunday from the ushers. Kids’ Notes, a weekly companion to Westminster’s morning worship, emphasizes listening and seeing during worship. The bags include storybooks for children of all ages, coloring paper and crayons, a children’s bulletin for those age three to six, and bookmarks for hymns and Scripture.

← The Lord’s Supper is celebrated the first Sunday of every month at both services.

← Worship Aids – You may obtain large print Presbyterian Hymnals and hearing devices from any usher.

Call to Worship

By God’s Spirit we were baptized into one body,

Let us sing praises to God for creating us as partners in mission.

Let us worship God in wonder and joy!

*Hymn No. 343 “Called as Partners in Christ’s Service” Beecher

Call to Confession

God does not give us a spirit of cowardice,

but seeks to inspire in us courage, determination and hope.

Let us confess our reluctance to be bold.

Prayer of Confession

Mighty God, we confess that we are often unaware of your presence.

Your Spirit surrounds us at all times,

but we are barely aware of your activity in our midst.

You urge us to respond in faithfulness,

but we are slow to serve you and reluctant to spread your love.

Enable us to discern the movement of your Spirit among us

and inflame us with a desire to do your will.

Silent Prayer

Assurance of God’s Forgiveness

In Jesus Christ we can discover new life.

Through His life, death, and resurrection we are forgiven.

Offertory Anthem “Bow Down Thine Ear” Michael Cox

Bow down thine ear O Lord and hear me: For I am poor, For I am needy. Be merciful unto me, O Lord: For I cry unto Thee daily. Rejoice the soul of Thy servant, Lord, Unto Thee do I lift up my soul. For Thou art great: Thou art God alone. Bow down thine ear and hear my prayer.

*Congregational Response (Hymn No. 591)

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Christ, all people here below;

Praise Holy Spirit evermore;

Praise Triune God, whom we adore. Amen

Prayers of the People

Lord’s Prayer (page 16 in The Presbyterian Hymnal, using “debts” and “debtors”)

*Hymn “In Haiti, There is Anguish” St. Christopher

In Haiti, there is anguish that seems too much to bear;

A land so used to sorrow now knows even more despair.

From city streets, the cries of grief rise up to hills above;

In all the sorrow, pain and death, where are you, God of love?

A woman sifts through rubble, a man has lost his home,

A hungry, orphaned toddler sobs, for she is now alone.

Where are you, Lord, when thousands die—the rich, the poorest poor?

Were you the very first to cry for all that is no more?

(continued on next page)

O God, you love your children; you hear each lifted prayer!

May all who suffer in that land know you are present there.

In moments of compassion shown, in simple acts of grace,

May those in pain find healing balm, and know your love’s embrace.

Where are you in the anguish? Lord, may we hear anew

That anywhere your world cries out, you’re there-- and suffering, too.

And may we see, in others’ pain, the cross we’re called to bear;

Send out your church in Jesus’ name to pray, to serve, to share.

Speaking of Faith: Why Religion Matters and How to Talk About It

A Discussion of Krista Tippett’s Book

Led by Anne Ledbetter

Through February 7, 2010 in Classroom 5

How do we ponder the abiding questions of faith, doubt and meaning that are at the heart of human experience? How may we begin to build honest and respectful interfaith dialogue concerning the meaning of faith and how we live our faith out in the world?

Pioneers of the Spirit – Hildegard of Bingen

DVD in the Daughtry House Classroom

Today we will look at the life of one of the Pioneers of the Spirit – Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179). A German nun and abbess, Hildegard of Bingen was an intellectual, writer, composer, and artist. She wrote about music (her musical compositions are being played to this day) art, medicine, natural history and theology. Hildegard is remembered also for her visions, which she wrote about in great detail. She was outspoken and criticized abuses wherever she saw them; kings and clergy alike received her admonitions. She was a renaissance woman, far ahead of her time.

Returning and Concluding Classes:

Art and Religion: Beauty, Order and the Search for God

Facilitated by Dave McBride

Today, Jim Moseley, Executive Presbyter of the New Castle Presbytery, will lead the last class of this series in Rodney Chapel. Jim will explore the relationship between his spirituality and the "existential folk art" he creates. Jim creates his existential folk art from debris and natural materials recovered from the Brandywine River. He explains that "with my art it is the notion that 'the river' is ever present and being re-presented in each new piece. In faithful living we carry and re-present to the world around us something of the rivers) inside us. I will be sharing a few pieces made of sticks, glass and river flotsam to open our discussions."

*Hymn “There Are Many Ways of Sharing” Nettleton

There are many ways of sharing, We've been baptized in the waters!

But God's Spirit gives each one. We've been given work to do.

There are different ways of caring; When you call your sons and daughters,

It's one Lord whose work is done. You give gifts for serving you.

God, whose gifts are overflowing, God, we join in celebration

May we hear you when you call; Of the talents you impart.

Keep us serving, keep us growing Bless each baptized one's vocation;

For the common good of all. Give each one a servant's heart.

All are blest by gifts you give us;

Some are set apart to lead.

Give us Jesus' love within us

As we care for those in need.

Give us faith to make decisions;

Give us joy to share your Word.

Give us unity and vision

As we serve your church and world.

Second, make a financial gift. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is rushing an initial $100,000 from One Great Hour of Sharing to help provide immediate emergency relief to the affected people of Haiti, and has issued an emergency appeal for donations. To contribute to the relief effort, make your check to Westminster Presbyterian Church and write “Haiti” on the memo line. Your contribution will be forwarded to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.

[pic] Our Mission Emphasis for January is “Sharing Our Plenty”

Despite the recent snowfalls and the bitterly cold weather, we are only beginning the winter season and there are many in our community who need food and clothing. Please take the opportunity to bring non-perishable food and your extra clothing to Westminster so that we can share our plenty with others. “There is no one so blessed that she/he has no needs.  And you are never so empty or inadequate that you have no gift to give.” (Greg Jones, January 3, 2010)

Every Sunday in January is Food Sunday Because of the extreme weather and high unemployment,  the food closets that we support, Hanover Presbyterian and St. Stephens Lutheran, need our help. We ask that you think of every Sunday in January as the day you will bring items to church to help fill this great need. When you are shopping for yourself, could you please pick up any of these items: cereal, rice, pasta, beans, canned milk, peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, tuna fish, vegetables, soups, drink mixes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, combs, diapers, paper towels. These items fly off the shelves at the food pantries! You will find collection boxes inside all doorways at church.

Clothing Drive - If you needed a reason to clean out closets and simplify, please gather up all your extra items and bring them to Westminster to help keep others warm and clothed. Greatly needed items are coats, sweaters, shoes, pants of all ages and sizes. Please give particular attention to cold weather clothes. Your donations will go to The Clothing Bank of Delaware.  You will find collection boxes near the receptionist's desk and in Community Hall. The last day of the Clothing Drive is Sunday, January 31.

Koinonia Circle is again extending a cordial invitation to all women and men to attend an interesting meeting this Tuesday, January 19, at 7:30 in the Meeting Room. Our special speakers will be Anne and Bob Deming who recently returned from a trip to India under a volunteer program through Cross-Cultural Solutions, similar to the Peace Corps. A tip they passed along, “If you happen to be in India for awhile and someone asks permission to kiss your feet, smile, place your hands on their head for a moment when they bow, and smile again when they stand back up.” We expect to learn a lot. Please join us.

Dr. Sue Makin returns from Malawi. Dr. Sue Makin after many years of service in Malawi and Congo has returned to the United States.  On Sunday, February 7th, Dr. Makin will be with us.   A luncheon is being planned in her honor at 12:00 p.m.  If you are interested in honoring Dr. Makin’s years of life saving service in Malawi and Congo, please call the church at 302-654-5214 and let us know that you will be attending.  We want to make sure that we have enough food to feed everyone.

Blessing of the Backpacks Update - With the funds collected through the generous donations to this project, Westminster has made a financial contribution to Shortlidge Academy in support of their mentoring program (called MentorMe!). This program is designed to help students in grades 3 through 5 in the areas of reading, math and writing. Linda Thomas, principal of Shortlidge Academy, has expressed a great need for mentors for this program. Each mentoring session is 30 minutes long, and training is provided. If you are interested in participating or would like more information, please contact Sicily Bordrick at 302-651-2710, ext 202.

Another Christmas Box Note of Appreciation

"To Everyone at Westminster Presbyterian Church,

I was contacted by your church and told I was to receive a food basket for Christmas for me and my 11 year old son.  When I arrived, I was amazed at the amount of food and the ShopRite gift card!  Then I saw there were gifts for my little boy, and even one package for me!  I was so happy and thankful for everyone's thoughtfulness!  My son loved his toys and I really needed the gloves and scarf and slippers!  I just wanted to thank everyone for their kindness. Also, I just got a phone call while writing this...it was [a bank] offering me [a position] that begins 2/1/10!  I prayed that I'd get a job soon, since I'd been laid off in June.  My prayers were answered!

Again, thank you for making our holiday a lot happier!

With Sincere Gratitude, " .....

On the front of the note card was this, attributed to Miriam U.M. Lane:

"So long as we love, we serve;

So long as we are loved by others, we are indispensable;

And no man is useless while he has a friend."

Westminster is looking for people who would like to serve as ushers during our Sunday worship services.  All ages third grade and above are welcome!  This is a wonderful way to meet and greet people as they enter our sanctuary.  If you can offer your time on Sundays one month of the year, please contact Suzie Hurlock at 302-654-5214, ext. 127, or suzie@.

The first people to welcome visitors and members to Westminster on Sunday morning are our greeters.  All it takes is a ready smile and a handshake!  You are welcome to greet by yourself or with other members of your family.  If you can offer your time on any Sunday to be the welcoming presence at our doors, please contact Karen Dietz at 656-0343 or kfdietz@.  You'll be so glad you did!

The Phix-it Corps, founded by Westminster member and Trustee Dick Geuder, is a dedicated group of handymen who gather two Thursday mornings each month to tackle odd jobs around the church.  It's a terrific way to serve Westminster, saving us from paying contractors, while building fellowship within the group.  If you have some Thursday mornings free and would like to help in this way, please contact Jim Carter at 302-764-6448 or jcarterphoto@.
