Read all questions carefully before answering them.Be thorough-include all requested materials. Make sure all forms have been signed.Be prompt! Pay close attention to deadlines and be respectful of others’ time. Always give teachers, counselors, etc. plenty of time (AT LEAST 2 WEEKS) to write your recommendation and/or complete required forms. Do not wait until the last minute!!The Application EssayShow, don’t tell. Be specific.Be creative. Try to develop an essay that will set you apart from the thousands of other applicants.Make sure there are no spelling errors. Using Spell Check is not enough. Have a parent or some other adult look it over for spelling and grammatical errors.Convey your personality. Here’s your chance to shine. Make sure what you have written is memorable and interesting.Things to Do before Your Senior Year BeginsVisit college campuses. Be sure to call ahead to participate in a guided tour. Make sure your list is realistic and includes a “safety” school. Keep a college calendar of all admission deadlines.If you plan on competing in Division I or Division II college sports and want to be eligible to be recruited by colleges, you need to register with the NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse. Deadlines for early applicants are usually in October, November, and/or December.* Early Decision plans are binding. If you apply to a college as an early decision candidate, you agree to attend the college if it accepts you. Although, you can only apply to one school Early Decision, you may apply to other colleges under regular admission. * Early Action plans are usually NOT binding. These hours are to be accumulated outside the regular school day and no money may be accepted for services rendered. You have until the first quarter of your senior year to fulfill this requirement and submit your Community Service Log to your counselor. If we are able to move forward with testing, you will be able to sign up in the School Counseling Office in February. *Speak with a recruiter regarding your interest in the military. York High School recruiters visit the cafeteria throughout the school year. York County School Division Community Service Program The York County School Division Community Service Program will offer recognition to students who perform 150 or more hours of community service during grades 9 through 12. This OPTIONAL program will begin with students who entered the 9th grade during the 2011-2012 school year. Students who successfully complete the Community Service Program are recognized with the Community Service Seal on their diplomas. *Transfer students will be given the opportunity to complete a prorated number of hours.How are Community Service hours documented? Hours earned as part of the Community Service Program must be documented on the Community Service Log Sheet. Students are required to log in hours, type of service and name of organization. Students must also identify a supervisor for each community service activity. Supervisors are responsible for verifying hours earned by signing the Community Service Log and providing their contact information. Hours earned as part of the Community Service Program must be documented once per school year and no later than April 15th of the senior year. Students will submit completed Community Service Logs to the school principal or designee. Students may obtain Community Service Logs by visiting the School Counseling webpage and clicking on the YCSD Community Service Program Log link.What is Community Service? Community Service activities are those which students perform to benefit at least one other unrelated person. No compensation or academic credit may be received.What are some examples of Community Service activities?Participation in a car wash to raise funds for a sport or clubA supervised tutoring program that takes place outside of the tutor’s class time (for up to 5 hours per week)Volunteering for political and issue campaigns outside of schoolDonating blood at times other than the student’s school day (1 hour)Collection of food, money or goods at times other than the school dayCOMMUNITY SERVICE LOGRecord the date of service, the service rendered, the location of the service and the number of service hours.
