POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT Career CounselorCollege of Liberal Arts Career ServicesUniversity of Minnesota The College of Liberal Arts (CLA) Career Services office at the University of Minnesota announces an opening for a Career Counselor. CLA Career Services serves students in the College of Liberal Arts on the U of M’s Twin Cities campus as they choose majors and careers, as they find internship or job opportunities, and as they implement successful job searches or graduate program applications. We also serve CLA alumni up to one year after graduation. Under the leadership of our new dean, John Coleman, CLA is dramatically increasing the career support available to students by adding several new staff positions. Five new career counselors and a new internship development coordinator are being added to an existing team of 7 full-time career services staff -- all in support of Dean Coleman’s goal of ensuring that “all of our graduates should leave the College absolutely confident that they are well prepared for the next stage of life.”Full information about CLA Career Services can be found at clacareer.umn.eduFull-time, 12-month position to begin immediately. Salary in low to mid-forties. Position is annually renewable, depending upon performance and funding. Report to career services director. Responsibilities: Serve on a team that coordinates career and internship services for CLA students. Collaborate with career services staff and other campus colleagues to ensure good communication, teamwork, and effective service to all "customers" (prospective students, current students, parents of students, faculty, staff, employers, and other members of the community).Through several delivery methods, provide general career support for liberal arts students. Conduct career counseling appointments with CLA students. Teach career courses. Develop and deliver presentations on resume writing, interviewing skills, job-search strategies, or customized topics for campus groups. Develop other services in conjunction with colleagues.Serve as a liaison to selected CLA majors. Partner with advisers and faculty in the major to address the unique career-related concern of their students. Specific services for each major will vary, depending on student needs, but may include individual career counseling appointments, classroom presentations, networking events, or career courses. Partner with advising and student services colleagues in the College of Liberal Arts to ensure CLA Career Services is well-connected to advising and other student support services in the college. As needed, serve as a career services representative on CLA committees, a member on project teams, or as a volunteer at events. Research market and job trends; keep abreast of most current information relevant to preparing liberal arts students for the world of work; maintain involvement in appropriate professional associations. Other duties as assigned and as appropriate to individual's background and experience.Qualifications:Required qualifications:Master's degree earned by date of appointmentAt least one year of experience providing career support to college students.Proven ability to develop and lead career planning events or programming.Ability to work well with and to communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Preferred qualifications:Master's degree in counseling, student affairs, higher education, or a related field.Experience using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Strong Interest Inventory, and StrengthsFinder assessment.Experience providing career counseling to liberal arts students.Familiarity with the University of Minnesota and its College of Liberal Arts.
