Lesson: Reading: Theme Two, The Keeping Quilt (Day 5).

Background, CONTEXT, and Purpose

Prior to this lesson, students have been working with the Theme Adventure. Theme Two, Celebrating Traditions was introduced at the beginning of the week. Students gained an understanding of what the word Tradition meant, and they have given examples of traditions that have been passed on through their families. The story, The Keeping Quilt has been read in sections, and students will be reading the complete story aloud for the first time today. Students will continue to put meaning to the word Tradition, and they will be expected to identify vocabulary words that have been introduced for the section, relate similarities to other subjects, identify important aspects of the quilt, and answer comprehension questions about the story while reading.

LESSON GOALS: NATIONAL STANDARDS

11.  Students participate as knowledgeable, reflective, creative, and critical members of a variety of literacy communities.

A.  The Lesson

1.       Introduction

•         To begin, I will examine comprehension of the story by asking questions about vocabulary words and the word Tradition. (Getting attention)

•         Next, I will relate this to their past experience and/or knowledge by asking them if they can remember the important object in the story, and why it was so important. I will also see if students can decipher similarities in the story to another subject they are learning. (Relating to past experience and/or knowledge)

•         I will continue by explaining that we will read aloud and each student will be asked a question about the section they have read. (Creating a need to know)

•         In addition, the students will be asked to help me fill out a study guide that better explains the history of the blanket and who and what it was used for throughout the story.  (Sharing objective, in general terms)

2.  Methods

1. Begin with the introduction listed above.

2. Start by having a student read aloud.

3. Once the student has read aloud, ask him/her a question(s) pertaining to the section he/she read.

4. Next, ask the class, or the student, if the blanket played a major role in the section that could be documented on the study guide.

5. This may take some time, as the worksheet is a new skill that the students started this past week dealing with comprehension and linking.

6. Once the story has been completely read, assign page 52, problems 1-6 for hand-in.

3.  Closure

The closure for this assignment is for students to hand in page 52, problems 1-6. If time is still available, students will have the opportunity to work on late assignments and/or read.

B. Assessments Used

o Students will be observed, they will have the opportunity to answer oral questions, they will work on problem-solving strategies, and the actual assessment will come from the page 52.

o Students should be able to understand vocabulary and ideas presented in the story when finished.

C. Back Pocket Ideas

Students will work on late homework, and/or read.
