December 11, 2006 Memorial Auditorium

Moorhead, MN GAME TIME: 7:45 p.m. SERIES: Concordia leads 3911 SERIES STARTED: 1981 LAST SEASON: Last year the Cobbers and Knights split the regularseason series and then Concordia claimed the tiebreaker in the championship game of the MIAC Tournament. In the first game, played in Northfield, CC used the strength of Jessica Heintz' 20 points to claim a 6553 victory. Heintz was 4of5 from 3point range in the game. In the return game in Moorhead, the Knights went on a 40 run in the final minute of play to take the 7064 win. Sarah Lincoln had 14 points off the bench to swing the game in Carleton's favor. In the championship game in Memorial Auditorium, the Cobbers knocked down seven threepoint field goals in the second half to erase an 11point halftime deficit to come from behind and beat Carleton 6556. Concordia had three players factor in double figures but none were more crucial than the 12 secondhalf points put up by guard Jessica Heintz. Heintz went scoreless in the first half and then came out and knocked down four shots from behind the arc to ignite the comeback. She also added a careerhigh seven assists. Melanie Hageman added a gamehigh 17 points for Concordia.

GAMEDAY GAME NOTES

? Welcome to the seasonopener for the Cobber women's basketball team in 200607! After playing their first six games on the road, the Cobbers return home to play their final game of the 2006 calendar year. Tonight's game is a rematch between the two teams that met in the conference championship game last year. Although Concordia has not had a great deal of "quantity" of home games so far this year, tonight's game should more than make up with "quality". ? Concordia welcomed a new member of the 1,000point club on Saturday. Senior guard Annie Keeley scored her 1,000th career point at the start of the second half and went on to add eight more in the game to become the 20th player in program history to eclipse the 1,000 point barrier. She finished the game with 18 points and now has 1,008 for her career. She needs only two more points to pass Mary Schultz ('80) but is still 1,094 points away from breaking head coach Jessica Rahmans' all time school record point total of 2,101! ? The Cobbers' season has been separated into three segments of two. CC won the first two games of the year to claim the championship of the Great Ships TipOff Tournament hosted by the Apprentice School in Newport News, Va. They then came home and dropped a pair of games including the conference opener at St. Ben's. Since then they have rattled off wins over St. Olaf and St. Kate's. ? Concordia continues to be led by the insideoutside tandem of Melanie Hageman and Annie Keeley. Hageman leads the Cobbers in scoring with a 17.7 points per game average. She also leads in rebounding with an 8.8 rebounds per game average. Both totals rank her among the top four in the conference. Keeley is close behind with a 17.2 points per game average. She leads the MIAC in 3point field goals and is currently shooting a nice 54.1% (20of37) from behind the arc. ? Several new faces are on this year's Cobber roster. Concordia features five freshmen on the team. Four of the five are guards and the fifth has a familiar last name for Cobber fans. Cammi Greenheck, Anna Matetich, Sara Sorbo and Kaitlynn Gottenborg are the four perimeter players and Julie Hageman is the only post player among the group. Sorbo currently leads all the firstyear players as she is averaging 4.8 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. ? Julie Hageman is the little sister of Cobber junior Melanie Hageman. She was added to the roster after the program went to print so she does not appear on the individual picture page. ? Carleton comes into the game having won six of their first seven games of the year. Their lone loss was at St. Ben's last Monday. The Knights rebounded later in the week by edging Bethel 6968 on Wednesday and then beating Hamline 7462 on Saturday. ? From the "You Think You Have It Rough" department. At least the Cobbers get to play one home game before Christmas, Carleton will not play a home game this year until after the New Year. They start the season by playing eight road games. The bright spot in the whole schedule is that they will finish the regular season by hosting nine of their final 11 conference games. ? The Knights are the youngest teams in the MIAC this year. Their probable starting lineup consists of one junior, two sophomores and one freshman. Carleton only features 11 players on their roster and does not have a single senior on the team. They have three juniors and the rest are either sophomores or freshmen. ? The Knights are led by sophomore post Hannah OkenBerg who is averaging 17.3 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. Her matchup with Melanie Hageman will be a great subplot to the entire game.

Concordia also significantly cut down on their turnovers in the game. After entering the contest averaging 23.8 miscues per game, the Cobbers only turned the ball over 15 times in the game. It is a seasonlow for the team and marks the first time all year they have not turned the ball over at least 20 times.

Carleton 200607 Season Preview

A year after winning 13 of its final 16 games and surprising some by advancing to the MIAC Playoffs title game for the sixth straight year, Carleton enters 200607 with a young team hungry to put the Knights' program back on the national stage. After struggling early in the season to a 57 start the Knights captured wins in 11 of their final 13 regular season contests to finish third in the conference. After beating Hamline in the conference tournament's opening round, they upset top seeded St. Benedict on the Blazers' home floor before running out of steam in the title game at ConcordiaMoorhead.

The Knights, though, lose three seniors off last year's team, most notably fourtime AllMIAC and threetime AllAmerican Megan Vig. The Northfield native finished second alltime at Carleton in scoring (1,668 points) rebounding (743) and blocked shots (80) and is the school's alltime leader in threepoint baskets (127). She and classmates Andrea Korb and Kari Christianson helped the Knights post 87 victories during their four seasons with three MIAC regularseason titles, two MIAC Playoff titles and two NCAA Tournament appearances.

The cupboard is hardly bare for head coach Tammy MetcalfFilzen, who moves into her 10th season on the Knights' bench and is two victories away from 200 for her career. Five of the six top scorers are back, paced by sophomore post Hannah OkenBerg, the lone AllMIAC pick as a first year player last year. She averaged 11.4 points and 5.0 rebounds while shattering the Carleton singleseason record with 69 blocked shots. Classmates Sarah Lincoln, Anna Biewen and Sarah Kunelius join Oken Berg as Carleton's top returning scorers, along with junior Annie Isler. While the Knights are young, they'll be more experienced than last season when they often found themselves with five newcomers on the floor at the same time. Joining OkenBerg in that sophomore class is Lincoln, who finished third on the team with 6.8 points per game coming off the bench and finished second on the team with 5.4 rebounds per game. Although the Knights will certainly miss Vig, her departure means OkenBerg is the focal point on the interior.
