Code: me7p4huStrategizing for the APUSH Exam: Familiarize yourself with this. This course picks up towards the end of “Period 5.” After you understand how the College Board thinks about this course and the APUSH exam, come up with a plan with how you will organize your own notes from US I and APUSH in a way that will work for you as you prep for the APUSH exam throughout the next academic year. You may want to consider buying an APUSH study guide book. There are many of them. Submit a paragraph to me detailing your organizational strategy via Google Classroom by July 15.Take Home Tests: Around July 1 on Google Classroom, I will post two untimed, “take home” tests, one dealing with the material in Kennedy Chapters 18 and 19, and another dealing with the material Kennedy Chapters 20 and 21. I will also post corresponding lectures for each of these four chapters, along with some other web resources that you may find helpful. You can prepare for these tests however you would like. The purposes of these tests are (a) to cover the gap between where your US I course left off and where this course will pick up, and (b) to give you a low-pressure chance to preview the typical test format for this course. They will not be weighted as test grades. You do not have to submit outlines, etc. for these chapters. Please complete and submit these tests by August 15.Catholic Assimilation in America: Read the linked “popular” articles below and use them to respond to the following prompt in the form of a five paragraph essay. This assignment is due via Google Classroom by August 31.How did Catholics transition from being a despised minority to an assimilated group in the United States during the period from 1865 to the present? the time period. Also note that the question does not ask if Catholics assimilated. The premise is that they did. You need to explain how and why this happened. Remember that body paragraphs begin with a topic sentence that connects to your thesis. There are multiple ways to organize your response that could work (by time period, by topic, etc.).Perspectives on Reconstruction: First, read and outline Kennedy Chapter 22. Then, read and outline each of the four academic articles cited above. You will be able to use your outlines on an essay test on the second day of class. This assignment will challenge you to develop the historical thinking skills required for successfully understanding different interpretations of American History. Students will examine the Reconstruction period (1865 - 1877) through the writings of four different historians. Each historian represents a specific historiographical period and a different perspective based on their own experiences and the available scholarship at the time. The historians selected are notable due to their research and scholarly contributions to the study of Reconstruction in United States history. This assignment is given in lieu of assigning a book. The materials are not long (the four articles total ~85 pages), but they are serious, academic readings that require rigorous concentration, focus, etc. Starting this one sooner rather than later would be wise. The APUSH curriculum requires that students are able to compare, contextualize, identify patterns of change and continuity over time, interpret, and synthesize a wide array of historical events and sources. This assignment was created with these ends in mind. You are required to develop an outline for each reading to be used during an in-class essay test on the second day of class. Outlines need to be stapled and include your name, the author, title, publication, and the publication year at the top of the page. Outlines for each reading are to be a minimum of four pages typed (double spaced) and a maximum of ten pages typed (double spaced). Outlines should include specific people, events, terms, and other relevant information to the author’s arguments. The test will require you to write three essays (out of a choice of about five) with the help of your outlines. The essay prompts will connect the readings thematically, historically, and possibly contrast the findings and interpretations of the four historians. As with the APUSH test itself, time management will be key. Remember, you will be able to use your outlines during the test. You will submit them to me for credit upon completing your test.Due Dates:July 15: Paragraph detailing your organizational strategy for the APUSH exam via Google ClassroomAugust 15: “Take home” tests via Google ClassroomAugust? 31: Catholic Assimilation in America essay via Google ClassroomSecond day of class: Perspectives on Reconstruction essay test and outline collection ................
