OUTREACH, APPLIED RESEARCH, AND CONSULTING/ADVISING:

July 2013-August 2014 Consultant and researcher, USAID funded project involving Ohio State University’s

International Programs in Agriculture. The project iAGRI, part of the USAID Feed the Future initiative, involves a consortium of universities in the US and Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in Tanzania. Work involves strengthening gender policies and gender mainstreaming SUA through teaching short courses on relevant topics (participatory research methods, gender analysis frameworks, gender mainstreaming), advising faculty and administrators on implementation of gender policies, advising graduate students on theses and dissertation proposals, working with the university’s Gender Policy Implementation Committee and an ad-hoc faculty and student group advocating gender policy development and implementation, and research as a member of the team of soil and extension researchers for the project “Improving Agricultural Productivity and Crop Nutritive Quality through a Gender Sensitive Approach to Cereal and Vegetable Production in Tanzania.”

Participant, USAID funded project involving Ohio State University’s International Programs in Agriculture. The project, Agriculture Innovation Partnership, involves a consortium of universities in the US and in India. Worked with faculty at 3 universities in India to assess need for development of gender courses and modules in the agriculture curriculum. Submitted a report documenting the history and state of gender in the agriculture curriculum in 2 Indian universities and the specific barriers to mainstreaming gender in the curriculum and teaching of existing courses that focus on gender.

August 2009 Collaborator, USAID funded project involving Ohio State University’s School of

Environment and Natural Resources and Universite Gaston Berger in Senegal. Project focuses on developing agroecology specialization and distance education program. Met with visiting faculty from Senegal to discuss social, cultural and gender aspects of curriculum development and research.

Sept 2007-2009 Team member, USAID funded project involving Ohio State University’s

International Programs in Agriculture, College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and the Colegio de Postgraduados in Montecillos, Mexico. Member of team of 5 faculty working on development of a graduate-level, 3 month training program to prepare graduates to work in the rural microfinance sector and to bring doctoral students and postdocs to study rural finance and rural sociology at Ohio State. Supplemental funding provided by CONACYT and the Ford Foundation in Mexico.

June-Dec 2006 Consultant and researcher, social impact assessment for paper pulp mill project in

rural Venezuela. With PlanUrbe, a civil association, Ciudad Guayana, Venezuela.

Advised methodology, helped with data collection and analysis, helped prepare final report.

Aug-Sept 2005 Consultant and researcher, program evaluation of rural night schools for poor

working children in 6 states of India (Barefoot College, Tilonia, Rajasthan). For UBS

Optimus Foundation (Switzerland). Spent 2 weeks visiting school sites in Rajasthan

and Madhya Pradesh and interviewing project partners from all 6 states. Prepared

extensive evaluation report, including partner profiles and financial reports for 11 partners, in-depth assessment of program implementation, outcomes.

November 2004 Advisor, International Programs in Agriculture (OSU). Provided technical training

December 2003 to visiting scholars from agriculture colleges and NGOs in India. Training focused

Jan-March 1999 on developing women’s studies curricula, overseeing gender analysis for agricultural programs, and teaching participatory planning methods. Funded by Food and Agriculture Organization, United Nations. Sessions varied in length from 1-6 weeks.

July 2002- Consultant, with PlanUrbe-Venezuela, for CVG-Proforca (forestry consortium) and

Jan 2003 the Corporación Venezolana de Guayana, Ciudad Guayana, Venezuela. Project title:

“La Cara Humana del Bosque” (Human face of the forest). Conducted a social

Grant to Mercedes Mandé, María Nuria De Cesaris, Cathy A. Rakowski and the University of Guayana to study life histories, town histories, public policy and programs, and to produce policy documents for thirteen rural towns. Part of a longitudinal study.

January-December 1993. University Seed Grant ($19,000) from the Ohio State University Office of Research for "Ecofeminism and Ecotourism: Women's Role in Managing the Environment." This study explored the development of theory and policy in ecotourism and women and the environment, especially in Latin America and Africa, and the feasibility of future funding for research in this area.

September 1992-August 1993. Research Grant ($22,000) from the Howard Heinz Endowment and the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Pittsburgh for "Beauty and the Beast: Administrative Decentralization, Structural Adjustment and Empowerment in Rural Venezuela." This study focused on political and administrative decentralization and its impact on decision making and infrastructural endowments in a rural boom town.

September 1990-August 1992. Research Grant ($53,000) from the National Science Foundation for "Pines, Planning and People: A Longitudinal Study of Social and Cultural Change in Rural Venezuela." This on-going research project evaluates the processes of social, economic, and political change in thirteen rural communities in a region of petroleum exploitation, forestry development, and industrialization. NSF funded the first of three stages of research.

Administer university-wide grant program that disburses an average of $35,000-50,000 annually on behalf of the Office of Academic Affairs, The Women’s Place and the Office of Development’s Critical Difference for Women fund. Oversee endowment of over $200,000 and continuing cash donations for grants competition. In 2014, the grants program passed the $500,000 mark in funds awarded since 1995.
