Introduction

Typically, people associate pyramids with Egypt. However, pyramids have been created all over the world. What makes us associate a style with a certain culture or time period? Recognizable architectural styles are often a result of nearby building material, weather, and culture.

Procedure

1. Choose one of the following architectural styles:

2. For your chosen style, find and record the following:

a. Identify the decade or years of most common use and when first used

Most commonly used during the early 1600s through the early 1800s.

b. Identify the typical number of stories for the structure

2 or 3 story building

c. Identify and describe the building materials used in the style

Brick - used for the siding and structure of the house

Wood - used for carving and creating the porch of the building/house

d. Identify and describe the Distinctive features of the style that make it identifiable and unique; list the three most common

Large columned entry way

Vertical Symmetry across front elevation

Medium pitched roof

Noticeable pediment over the front door

Paired chimneys (one on each side of house)

e. Identify and describe how the purpose of the structure, site location, the use of lines, form, color, texture, rhythm, balance, proportion, and unity are used in the architectural style.

Contrast: Red bricks and white columns make a noticeable difference Vertical Lines: Symbolizing dignity, formality, stability, and strength

Cool Colors: White and dark shades used to sooth and not overwhelm visitors Square

Form: House is a 3D object usually consisting of squares and rectangles, not many curves

Space: Big house with nice, open space, especially front. No clutter or cramped area, plenty of space to be appealing Texture: Smooth wood surface for the front to make brighter, and siding is a rougher brick to even out the bright front

Value: The house comes off as a bright color with little dark shading but more highlights of the white and off color shades

Balance: Vertically symmetrical (formal)

Rhythm: Regular rhythm with the same vertical lines being repeated through out the house

Emphasis: Large vertical pillars and symmetrical front elevation draw viewers attention Proportion and

Scale: Columns are bigger than everything else, but all the other pieces of the house are relative in size

Movement: Use of symmetry and big open front draws attention of everyone to front door and entry way

Unity: Consistent use of vertical lines along with the same colors ties all of the house together for visual enjoyment

f. Provide at least three examples of the style; include an example from the local area if appropriate, using sketches if digital images are not available.

g. Provide information about the use of the style, such as its use as a residential, industrial, or commercial structure, architects who may have used the style, and other information that will enhance learning about the style.

Southern Colonial Architecture was mainly used in a residential setting.

h. Identify and describe the location, state, or country, where this style is most commonly used.

Southern Colonial Architecture came to be when the colonists of the United States first moved here. The styles of Southern Colonial Architecture originated from the southern plantations of the nation

3. Create a presentation including four slides. Slide one should include the title of the presentation and your name. Slides two and three should highlight and summarize your findings. Slide four should cite your references.
