AUGUST 2016

SMALLBORE RIFLE

Wayne Nunn

It looked like the July Match was going to be a HOT day so we shot 80 shots instead of 160. We had a total of 6 brave souls did not waste any time, and we were done at 1200. John McComb showed us that you must shoot 10s to win. I shot more Xs, but John won with a 792-32X, Philip Beekley shot a 774-24X to win F Class by default and Don Lenoir shot a 792-41X from the bench.

The August match will be a 80 shot match, and we will NOT have a CMP Sporter Match. The next Sporter Match will be in October. Fun Starts at 0900 so shooters need to get there at 0800 or so. Cost is 15.00 for adults and 5.00 for juniors. In September we will have an Approved 1600 Match.  Cost is $20.00 for adults and $10.00 for juniors.

BRAUN 4H REPORT

Dennis Anguiano

The 4H Braun will be on vacation for the month of August. Juniors will try to relax on their last couple of weeks before school starts and parents will use their weekends off to run around getting last minute school supplies. Thanks go out to Daniel Ramos for allowing us to use his home in July to conduct 4H Braun audit of equipment and finances. Thanks also go out to Chris Rabago for getting the 3 volunteers for the audit. This is a requirement every year for all 4H organizations in District 10 Bexar County.

Reminder: Every year, 4H requires all adult volunteers to go thru a background check. When registration opens up for the 2016-2017 year please remember to complete this for your registration to go thru.

Reminder: Junior elections will soon take place in September. Good luck to all and have a good school year.

4H Junior Club Officer Training:

If you are the newly elected Club Officer for your club, you should make plans to attend this fun training on Thursday, August 11th, 1:00 to4:00 p.m. at the Helotes Activity Center. This training will prepare you to take on those duties as club leaders.

Members do not need to bring anything. They will be given an officer folder with everything they need to complete their duties as a club officer. If you have not elected officers, no problem, ask your members if they think they might want to be an officer, and send them to receive some training.

Community service activity for this year will be making “blankets for premature babies”. Please bring lots of scraps of yarn and baby fabric. What we have left over will be donated to Threads of Love, so they can continue to make baby blankets.

HIGHPOWER RIFLE

The High Power training match was held on the last Saturday in July. The weather was just about perfect. We had a couple new juniors out with us. Dennis Anguiano gave the juniors a High Power clinic while the 1st rely was firing.

We had a good turnout, with 17 shooters, including 5 juniors. Shooting off the bench, Philip Beekley had the high score, with a 499-23. KellyJeanne Pyne had the top High Power score, shooting a 490-17x. John Cholak was second shooting a 478-7x.

The next scheduled High Power training match will be held on August 21st, at the CTSA Range, New Braunfels. Match fee is $20 for adults and $10 for juniors and active military. Gate should be open by 0730, followed by sign-up. Fun begins at 0815 for set up and first rounds down range at 0900.

DEFENSE

Fredd Bergman

Defense division will be conducting a carbine/two-gun event August 20th, 9:00am until 3:00pm. Basic Defensive Rifle tactical training. 9am-4pm at our facility on BlackHawk range ( ). Fee is $20 for members and $35 for non-members. Drill requires 350 rounds of ammunition. We will allow .22LR conversion kits, but be aware, utilizing the .22LR substantially encumbers the desired effects of the training. All carbine events are two-gun, with pistol, if individual shooters choose to run it that way. Following is a list of mandatory equipment: rifle, at LEAST two magazines (more is better), magazine pouch, hearing protection, eye protection, rugged footgear, headgear, shooting mat, dummy cartridge. Elbow and knee pads are recommended, but not required. Participants must already be proficient with their firearms. This is a basic course in tactical fundamentals, involves shooting while moving, and is conducted in an "always hot" environment. Your firearm will remain loaded at all times, as it is in the field. Appropriate uniform is necessary. Law Enforcement personnel wear your duty gear. Military participants wear appropriate kit. Civilians can wear whatever, as long as you meet basic equipment requirements. Pre-registration is required. Contact Tactics@

On August 27th, we are conducting a Women on Target event, 9:00am until 3:00pm. Participation is $50 and, as usual, we provide eyes, ears, guns and ammunition. We need volunteer instructors and safety officers, so if you can afford the time, we need help of the membership to pull it all together. Contact Bergman at 210-619-9340, or wot@ .

MEMBERSHIP CARD UPDATE

STMTC has purchased a membership card-specific printer for the purpose of resolving our various challenges getting the new cards to you. Soon we will be mailing out PVC cards (credit card like plastic) so we can all have our cards and keep them handy. Hang in there--we're getting it done.

PISTOL

Jim Ford

The July 23, 2016 Bowling Pin Training Match at STMTC Blackhawk Range was attended by nine aficionados, six were paying competitors. George Becquet acted as timer and range safety officer, and Jim Ford was the director/score keeper. Jason Laa assisted with timing, video photography, table and pin resets, score keeping, and occasionally got to shoot. Dave Braun won the rim fire category with a 42 against the only other shooter, Carter Mayfield, with a score 33 out of a possible 48. Each had one perfect run of 24.

Carter Mayfield won the center fire match with a 40. Dave Braun was second (18), and an old/new shooter, Duane Hemphill, third (13). Philip Beekley, son Ryan, and Alex Benet also participated in the center fire match. Our new competitor, Duane Hemphill, normally shoots IDPA next door. He had not shot bowling pins since Lackland, AFB stopped matches after 9/11 and asked to join us. I did not immediately have $5.00 change for him so he insisted on donating it to STMTC. Thanks, Duane.

Several shooters were complaining that the pins were so full of lead they wouldn’t fall, so next match will feature all brand new, UNLEADED bowling pins. Watch the Calendar at for the next Pistol Training Matches. Thanks to all who came out. ---
