Detailed Academic Prerequisite Information for the MPT Program – for entrance in September 2018

Prerequisite Courses

All applicants are required to have completed the following prerequisites with a minimum academic standing of B (72%) in all prerequisite courses. Please visit our website for a detailed overview of our prerequisite requirements. Please note that the information you provide on this form will be verified by the admissions team and any attempt to provide false information will result to the disqualification of your application.

* At UBC 3 credits is equal to a course which spans one term, 6 credits is equal to a course which spans two terms

Human Physiology – 6 credits in Human Physiology. A two term/full-year 6 credits course in Human Physiology or two 3 credit courses. For a complete list of courses please visit our website for the Physiology Prerequisites Chart.

Please note: Applicants to the program may NOT use two exercise physiology courses in combination to meet this requirements. If using two courses to meet the requirements, the course content must not be the same, or overlap in materials. At least 3 credits must be general human physiology. If you have any questions regarding this, you must contact mpt.admissions@ubc.ca prior to November 1 2017.

Anatomy – 3 credits in Human Anatomy. For a complete list of courses please visit our website for the Anatomy Prerequisites Chart. Anatomy courses must cover gross anatomy of the human musculoskeletal, visceral and neurological systems. Courses such CAPS 390 at UBC or the equivalent are no longer acceptable towards the Anatomy Prerequisite.

Physics – Grade 12 Secondary level Physics or 3 credits of any University level Physics courses can be used to cover this prerequisite.

Statistics – 3 credits in Statistics. Content should include statistical methods, probability theory, discrete and continuous random variables, estimation, hypothesis testing, regression, analysis or variance, goodness of fit, confidence intervals, elementary non-parametric methods, exploratory data analysis and hypothesis testing, simple linear regression and contingency tables variances. Any of the following UBC courses or courses that are transferable to the following are accepted for this prerequisite: STAT 200, 203, BIOL 300, COMM 312, 291, ECON 325, EPSE 482, 483, FRST 231, GEOG 374, KIN 371, POLI 380, PSYC 218, 366, SOCI 328.

English – 3 credits in post-secondary level English. This course must have assessment of reading, writing and essay composition. This course must be taken at University or College level in order to be acceptable for application.  UBC's ENGL 112 or ASTU150/WRDS 150 or its equivalent will be accepted. Courses in Humanities and/or Social Science will not be accepted. Any courses that are transferable to UBC as an English credit will satisfy the prerequisite. We are unable to accept a thesis for this requirement.

Psychology – 3 credits in Psychology. Any course offered by the Department of Psychology at your institution can be used to cover this prerequisite. UBC’s KIN 231 (if taken before 2016 summer session) or its equivalent will also be accepted.

All prerequisite courses must be completed by December 31 2017 and must be included in your final transcripts to be submitted by the application deadline of January 15 2018. If you are currently taking one of the required courses indicate this under “date completed”.

The Department of Physical Therapy at the University of British Columbia considers applications from both students who have completed or are in the process of completing a post-graduate degree. Students applying in the final year of a four-year degree program must provide proof of completion of the degree requirements prior to the date of enrolment in the MPT program.
