Meetings

The following meetings took place in 2004

1. May to September 2004: Best Practices City Exhibition, Universal Forum on Cultures, Barcelona, Spain. Exhibit devoted to the issues of the MDG and to raising awareness of the general public in a highly visual and icono-graphic form. Substance includes over 50 practices being implemented by partnerships between grassroots and non-governmental organizations, local authorities and governments. MDGs covered include health, education, water and sanitation, slum improvement, gender equality and social inclusion.

2. May to September 2004: Water Exhibition, Universal Forum on Cultures, Barcelona, Spain – joint exhibit prepared by UN-HABITAT, the International Water Secretariat and Green Cross designed to raise public awareness of water and sanitation issues.

3. 13 - 17 June 2004: Dubai Municipality hosted the 2004 Technical Advisory Committee (TAC). The TAC reviewed 670 submissions from more than 90 countries for the 2004 DIABP. It identified 108 submissions as Best Practices and selected a short-list of 40 submissions of equal merit for review by the Best Practices Jury.

4. 11 - 12 July 2004:The Best Practices Jury met from in Dubai to review the 40 short-listed Best Practices and to select the 10 Award winners

5. 26-29 July 2004: An Expert Group Meeting was held in Nairobi. It was designed as an opportunity to share the experience in the use of the methodology with those who participated in the pilot phase and to finalise the methodology as a tool. The meeting brought together key persons and institutions from participating countries, namely, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Philippines, Mexico, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Tanzania and Uganda

6. 15-16 September 2004: First Global Hip-Hop Summit, a meeting taking place within the framework of the 2nd World Urban Forum, Barcelona, Spain. Meeting of youth groups, Hip-Hop artists and recording/entertainment industry executives to discuss MDG and Targets 1,2,3,6,10,11 and 16 in particular. Meeting to launch “Messengers of Truth Project” designed to inform and empower 300 million youth living in slums and inner cities by 2007.

7. 13 September 2004: Award Systems Roundtable organized during WUF II was the first global meeting between award systems that recognize, promote and facilitate the exchange of lessons learned from experience, in support of more sustainable development

8. 14 September 2004: The Hip-Hip Encounter saw four Ministers of State, one Mayor, and the Executive Director of UN-HABITAT appoint the first twelve artists/groups and a movie director as “UN-HABITAT Messengers of Truth”. These artists have committed themselves to helping the United Nations to reach out to and inform urban youth worldwide of the MDG.

• 15th September 2004: The Hip-Hop Concert was a “party with a purpose” where 11 rap artists and a group of break-dancers representing all regions of the world performed about their respective social, economic, cultural and environmental realities.

• 16th September 2004: The Hip-Hop Summit resulted in the adoption of a Framework Declaration of Principles and Call for Action by the artists, youth groups and representatives of the music industry. This document is destined to evolve and to be enriched by successive regional Summits. It provides the operational guidelines for the Messengers of Truth Project and underlines the overriding principle of co-ownership of the Project by youth groups and performing artists.

9. October 2004: Launch of the 2004 edition of the Best Practices database featuring a new subset on “Best Practices in attaining the MDG” comprising of over 400+ practices from 50 countries.

10. November 11th 2004 – BLP held a workshop on Hip-Hop and Youth at risk under the umbrella of the Safer Nairobi Residents Convention

2005 Meetings and Events

1. January 29th-31st 2005: Dubai International Awards Ceremony for Best Practices in Improving the Living Environment, featuring 10 award-winning practices in attaining the MDG, and an international conference focusing on lessons learned.

2. May 2005 - Appointment of DJ Awadi as an MOT. DJ Awadi is credited with promoting self-esteem among youth in Senegal by encouraging them to find ways to help themselves

3. June 2005 – The "Messengers of Truth Project” of UN-HABITAT is working in partnership with ICVISIONS to co-organise the World Hip-Hop Festival and The Thousand-Word Project to be held in Toronto, Canada

4. October 2005: The "Messengers of Truth Project” of UN-HABITAT is working in partnership with Native Rhythms Productions to co-organise the Hip-Hop Summit and a Concert in South Africa
