CONSUMERS WANT BROADCAST TV FOR OTT

ABC, CBS, FOX & NBC ARE 'ESSENTIAL'

People may be willing to cut or shave the cord to save money, but a report from Horowitz Research finds that they aren’t willing to give up broadcast network television. When it comes to what they find indispensable, the networks named most often as “essential” are ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC. 67% of the people surveyed named at least one of the Big Four.

ABC was named as essential by 51% of core streamers; CBS 47%; FOX 45% and NBC 44%. The top cable nets were Discovery and FX, tied at 40%; with ABC Family (now renamed Freeform) and ESPN at 39% each; and AMC and History 38% each.

For core streamers, 71% said access to broadcast networks is one of the things they value most in a TV/video service. That was exceeded only by 75% wanting access to Cable Entertainment (split among many more channels) and 74% who valued having a wide variety of channels. Who wouldn’t?

"Broadcast is alive, well, and continues to deliver value in today's fragmented ecosystem," asserted Howard Horowitz, president of Horowitz Research. But an increasing amount of broadcast TV viewing is non-linear. Since 2010, the percent of TV viewers who stream at least some of their TV content has risen from 15% at the beginning of 2010 to 57% in January 2016.

"There is no denying that we are in an age of disruption," said Horowitz. "What we see, though, are two trends happening in parallel. Viewers' love of television is growing and, simultaneously, streaming is becoming increasingly commonplace. People are not moving to streaming for the sake of wanting to stream. They are moving to streaming because they want more access to the great content they love, and this is a key opportunity area."

The annual State of OTT report by Horowitz Research finds that 75% of Core Streamers who currently have a multichannel subscription say they are interested in replacing it with an Internet-delivered, linear, skinny bundle of only their "essential" networks, at the right price. According to the research firm, that translates to 22% of total TV viewers.

"The future is bright for streaming services that can combine the advantages of video access anywhere, the content available on linear TV channels—particularly broadcast networks—and the library of content and user experience of current online subscription streaming services, whether delivered by traditional multichannel players or the new OTT players that are coming to market," Horowitz added.

Smaller sibling Baskin-Robbins grew comps by 5%. But the numbers were negative at Bloomin’ Brands, where Outback Steakhouse comps were down 1.3% while siblings Carrabba’s Italian Grill and Bonefish Grill fell by 2% and 2.7% respectively. FORD WORKING ON LONG-RANGE EV

Ford Motor Company is working on a long-range electric vehicle (EV), company CEO Mark Fields confirmed. The Detroit News says the EV will be designed to rival the 200-mile Tesla Model 3 and General Motors Chevy Bolt EV—with about double the range of the upcoming 2017 Ford Focus Electric.

“Our EVs come down to making sure we’re the best or among the leaders in those areas,” Fields said Thursday.

Tesla made waves last month when it unveiled its much-hyped Model 3, which will start at $35,000 before federal and state incentives. Tesla says the car will have a range of 215 miles per charge and accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than six seconds. Tesla wants to bring it to market by the end of 2017, but the automaker has faced many product delays. GM plans to launch its 200-mile range Bolt EV this year. It will cost about $30,000 after federal incentives.

CNN USING COMSCORE XMEDIA DATA

CNN, a division of Turner, has signed on with comScore as a launch partner for what’s billed as the first-ever syndicated product to combine TV and digital audience metrics. CNN will leverage comScore’s Xmedia to measure a total unduplicated view of audience across its television, desktop and mobile properties in a single metric. The joint announcement says CNN is now able to more effectively partner with advertisers to develop cross-media packages that measure against the full scope of the network’s reach and engagement.

A just-released study of CNN’s cross-media audience, using Xmedia, shows that CNN’s strong digital presence extends its TV reach by nearly 50%.

DREAMWORKS IS A DONE DEAL

The rumor is now reality—Comcast is buying DreamWorks Animation for $3.8 billion, plus what Wells Fargo Securities analyst Marci Ryvicker estimates at about $250 million in assumed debt, for a total price of about $4.1 billion. “Comcast’s strategic rationale makes sense,” she said in a note to clients. The analyst says the acquisition will spur growth in animated films, but also boost the company’s theme parks and related consumer products—something she previously described as “the Disney way.”
