THE YEAR MOVES ON! – Okay, so it was just yesterday that I was welcoming you to the new school year and here we are with just eleven days until the end of October. November is going to be a busy month, with Mactoberfest, and it is shortened by a week off at Thanksgiving. Before you know it, it will be December, and the school year is half over.

Every year seems to go by so fast, and it is so easy to lose sight of the most important part of school, our kids. I was just talking with one of my parents the other day and we were both shocked by how fast time has gone by. I have had several of her kids, and now the youngest is a senior. While time may be fleeting, memories are forever. Don’t forget to take time to build memories with your kids. They are only kids for a short while and then they are suddenly out in the adult world. Take time to enjoy them and get involved in what they are doing. What you invest now will resonate in their memories for years to come. Carly Simon once sang a song called Anticipation with the refrain “These are the good old days.” That is exactly what they are, so enjoy them while you can. Have a great rest of October. Go Brahmas!

Here is all the news for the week:

ANNOUNCEMENTS-

These awards are announced in the senior year. This year I am pleased to announce that we have three students who have been recognized as Commended Scholars and two that have been recognized as Hispanic Scholars. Congratulations to the following:

Commended Scholars: Hispanic Scholars:

These great young people will be honored at a breakfast this Thursday, and at halftime during this weeks’ football game against Madison. Congratulations to these great students and congratulations to their parents, and all of those who have supported and encouraged them.

REPORT CARDS – Report Cards for the first nine weeks will be available this week.

This is a reminder that NEISD has moved to paperless Report Cards. The Report Cards will be available online starting this Wednesday morning, October 23rd. They are available electronically through family access and student access.  Parents who request a paper copy will have one sent home.

If a parent does not have a family access account, they can also get the Report Card through their child’s student access account. These Report Cards affect eligibility. Students in a waivable class should have submitted their waiver no later than this Thursday, October 24th, at 4:30 pm. Students with a failing grade became ineligible at 4:15 pm on Friday, October 25th. Parents needing help with the online progress report can call the NEISD Help Desk.

MACTOBERFEST AND BRAHMA MARCH – Just 16 days until this year’s Mactoberfest and Brahma March, which will take place on Wednesday, November 6th.

Mactobefest will be from 4:30 to 6:15 pm.  Each year Mactoberfest transforms our courtyard into a fall festival including music, good food, a photo booth, inflatables and other fun games!!!  This event has something for all ages and will be fun for the whole family. Wristbands for entry will be $2.  All profits will go to charity, and MacArthur H.S. clubs and organizations.

At 6:00 pm, we line up for our annual Brahma March. At 6:15 pm, we invite you to line the parade route as we March out the MAC Bus circle and through the Regency neighborhood.  .

We finish the evening with our night Pep Rally back in the MAC courtyard. This is a fun event for the whole family.  Invite your friends; bring the family for one of the most fun events of the year. Go Brahmas!

SAFE DRIVING CHALLENGE - Calling all Brahma students, families, friends and community.  NEISD Council of PTAs needs your help to promote a safe driving message and win a competition between all NEISD high school campuses. We have all partnered with Safe 2 Save to reward safe driving.  S2S is a free app, which rewards you for every mile you safely drive. You simply download the app and open it before you start your drive. You can then redeem safe driving points at various vendors for free food and other items. Each school has a code and when you download the app go to the trophy icon and type in DMHS to be sure our campus gets safe driving points and wins the competition! Anyone can put in the DMHS code and add points to our score.  Once the competition starts, you will be able to keep track of how we are doing on a leaderboard.  Ask everyone you know who drives and even passengers to download the app so we can gather as many points as possible! We know MacArthur HS is the best campus in the district, now lets show everyone we are the best drivers too!  If you have any questions, please email Liz Wayne, parent sponsor MAC PTSA Smart Driving Club, at lcwayne@.  The competition runs from October 15-November 15. Be a part MAC and let’s take the challenge.

TOBACCO/VAPE PRODUCTS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY – Prior to the start of the school year a letter was distributed via email to all North East ISD parents which detailed both the dangers of “vaping” – i.e. using electronic cigarettes – and the potential disciplinary consequences that may result from doing so on district property or at a district-sponsored event. I am sending you this additional reminder given that vaping continues to occur on the MacArthur High School campus. In addition to my concern over the health risks this behavior poses, I also need to reiterate my continued intent to recommend expulsion for students who are found to be vaping THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, the principal psychoactive ingredient in marijuana) or have THC in their possession. I feel that this strong stand is imperative not only to remain compliant with state law and the North East ISD Student Code of Conduct, but also to help to deter a behavior that is endangering our students.

The potential health hazards that vaping presents are well documented. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating 6 deaths and more than 380 reported cases of severe lung illness related to vaping and is encouraging users of all ages to stop vaping as they do so. The CDC is working closely with the Food and Drug Administration and state agencies to assess the effects that vaping may have on young people in particular.

Regardless of these findings, possession and use of e-cigarettes/vaping devices remains illegal under state law for persons under 18. All devices, oils, and other paraphernalia are explicitly prohibited by the North East ISD Student Code of Conduct for students of all ages. Confiscated devices, cartridges and oils will be subject to immediate on-campus chemical testing. Students who are in possession of any item which tests positively for THC will be recommended for expulsion as such possession is a state jail felony. Note that possessing or being under the influence of any controlled substance as detailed above can also result in separate criminal penalties as determined by law enforcement.

For the safety and wellbeing of our children, please help me to reinforce the serious safety and disciplinary consequences, which can result from vaping. You can access for additional resources, which may help you to initiate this conversation with your child. Thank you for your continued collaboration as we strive to ensure the safest possible educational environment for all students.

ACTIVITIES -

MAC BAND – This past Saturday, our awesome Band, Color Guard, and Brahmadoras were at Heroes Stadium, competing in the UIL Marching Competition. After a long day of performances, MAC took the field at 5:45 pm. Once again, it was a hot afternoon, but our Brahmas were not deterred, as they put on another incredible performance. The crowd was overwhelmed and responded with great applause for their performance. The judges were equally impressed, as they scored MacArthur SUPERIOR in all categories! This is the second year in a row that MAC scores superior at UIL!

Congratulations to our Brahma Band, Color Guard, and Brahmadoras on another great win! Go Brahma Band!!

MAC Football – The Brahmas were at Heroes this past Friday night, facing off with Churchill. Our Brahmas put up a great fight and played hard from start to finish. MAC tied the score at 7 in the first quarter, when Charles Collins took a 52-yard pass from Austin Lee with the extra point by Alonzo Escobar. Our Brahmas scored again in the third quarter, when Austin Lee put up a 22-yard pass to Charles Collins and Alonzo Escobar put the extra point through the uprights. Overall, our boys played hard and with a lot of heart. Unfortunately, the win would evade them. No matter what, our Brahmas make the game exciting, and give great effort from start to finish. .

The next game for the Brahmas will be this Friday, October 25th, when our Brahmas take on Madison at 7:30 pm at Heroes Stadium. We will also be honoring our Merit Scholars at halftime. Come on out and cheer on our Brahmas and our Merit Scholars! Go Brahma Football!

Sophomores Jonathan Thompson and Caden Trout broke to quarterfinals in public forum debate. By doing so they acquired two Texas Forensic Association State qualifying points and are well on their way to qualifying for the state tournament in March. Jonathan Thompson was a last-minute addition to informative speaking, but ended up winning first overall, which gained him six qualifying points to TFA state in that event.
