Jade WestbrookHealth 1050 – 503International Connections #2August 3rd, 2020 International Connections #2For this paper, I have decided to talk about the power of the tobacco and alcohol industries. Alcohol and tobacco industries still have a lot of power today. They have been growing everyday especially with the younger generations being involved with tobacco and alcohol. Tobacco and alcohol companies both gain power with their advertisement, as wells as their sales, and production. With everything going on in the world, the tobacco and alcohol industries are still producing at steady rates. Alcohol companies sell and produce at steady rates. They still have power over other companies. There are more companies and individuals beginning to make alcohol (like distilleries) and there are many locations that sell alcohol (i.e. restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations, liquor stores). Overall, the alcohol industries are powerful. They may be regulated in public places, but nobody limits you on how much you buy. Alcohol is easily accessible as well. It can be purchased in multiple locations. They remain one of the powerful industries because it is always in need for individuals, stores, and other locations. Tobacco industries are also at a steady rate of production. With more individuals wanting and buying products with tobacco in it they continuously sale their products. Many individuals buy cigarettes, chew, or even e-cigarettes. In some cases, from module five, tobacco is used for ceremonial uses as well so production is at large for many reasons. Whether it be for use for an individual, recreational use, or ceremonial use in other cultures and religions. Both industries, however, have powerful advertisement agencies. They always make their products targeted towards younger individuals. They also, have many kinds of advertisements to catch individuals’ eyes. They use TV commercials, public transportation advertisements, billboards, commercials on the radio, and even on social media platforms. These industries are continuously growing, leading to more power because more individuals are wanting to consume these products. They will always be a common thing to buy with many individuals. I feel like they are also, more powerful nowadays because they aren’t considered illegal production or sales. Like illegal drugs have a lot of power, whether it be drug cartels or just illegal drug sales in general. As discussed in these modules, the prohibition of alcohol in 1920-1923 led to many other consequences of this “illegal” product being produced and sold. For example, people started to make moonshine and even speakeasies. However, during this time frame they did have fewer individuals in the hospital for alcohol related cases. As you can see though, the prohibition of alcohol didn’t last long. “Prohibition was doomed to failure.” This quote was pulled from module six. It is a true statement. No matter what, if a drug or substance is prohibited somewhere you will always have individuals who are producing, selling, or even buying these products all around you. Take for example the illegal drug use nowadays. Individuals will always have a way to produce, sell, or consume these drugs. They are continuous cycles that are never ending, even with prohibitions. Overall, tobacco and alcohol industries still gain power to this day. They are always in production, selling, and tons of people buying the products. The younger generations help these companies to gain more perspective as to what people will buy. These two companies will also be a common industry within an individual’s life. They are easily accessible to buy compared to other illegal drugs. In the end, these two industries will continue to have and gain power. ................
